Mary Josephine Battiste
72, Glace Bay
Mary Josephine Battiste, 72, of Glace Bay, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex, surrounded by her family.
Born in Glace Bay, was the daughter of the late William and Jessie (Whiting) Ford.
Mom was a loving and caring woman who was dedicated to her family. In her younger years she was employed with MacKeigan’s Bakery in Glace Bay.
Mary is survived by daughters, Marilyn (Harold Langley), Edmonton, Alta., Paulette, Halifax, Debbie, and a son, James, both at home. She is also survived by brothers, James, William and David (Sharon) Ford, all of Glace Bay, sisters, Theresa Gillis, Helen MacDonald, Linda (Ernie) Billard, Carol Hynes, Rita Stoodley, all of Glace Bay, Ruth Davis, Hamilton, Ont., Margaret Bobbett, Lorraine (David) MacKillop, B.C. Mary was a special nan to grandchildren, Chris, Joel and Stephanie and she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Sidney, sisters, Catherine, Ann, Shirley, Ann Jovita, and a brother, Paul.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 22, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, with Cannon Fev Arnold officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.
Antoinette Bourgeois
Halifax
Antoinette Bourgeois passed away peacefully after a short illness on Friday, March 17, 2000.
She was born in Cheticamp in 1916. She was the daughter of the late Lubin and Elizabeth (Aucoin) Desveaux.
Antoinette is survived by four sons and two daughters; one brother, Joseph (Agnes) Desveaux, one sister, Olive Chiasson, both of New Waterford; seven grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1989 and an infant daughter.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of the Cheticamp Funeral Home.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on March 19 in St. Peter’s Church. Interment in the parish cemetery.
John Charles Fraser
53, Dingwall
Charlie Fraser, 53, of South Ridge Road, Dingwall, died suddenly Monday, March 20, 2000, as a result of a snowmobile accident.
Born at Meat Cove, he was the son of the late Angus Fraser and Catherine (MacKinnon) Fraser.
Charlie spent his life fishing but his real passion was for snowmobiling. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
Surviving are his wife, the former Belinda MacKinnon; five daughters, Joan (Larry Bishop), Pleasant Bay, Mary (Cal Bishop), Cheticamp, Wanda (Ronnie Hennick), Dingwall, Laura (Jimmy MacIntyre), Glace Bay and Allison (Travis Penny), Cheticamp; two sons, John Allister (Paula), Cheticamp and Leon (Nicole), Dingwall; five sisters, Laura (Wayne Fitzgerald), Sugar Loaf, Thelma (Paul MacDonald), Sydney, Denena MacLellan, St. Margaret’s Village, Mary (Allan J. MacKinnon), Sydney and Catherine (Francis MacLellan), Meat Cove; five brothers, David (Elizabeth), St. Margaret’s Village, Dennis (Joanne), St. Margaret’s Village, Johnny (Leona), Calgary, Archibald (Lorraine), Cheticamp and D.A. MacKinnon (Carol), St. Margaret’s Village; 13 grandchildren, Colin, Joey, Dougie, Colton, Natasha, Brittany, Jenna, John, Jules, Johnny, Thomas, Georgie and Jade.
He was predeceased by one brother, Ralph.
The late Mr. Fraser will have no visitation as cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Aspy Bay United Church with the Rev. Rose-Hannah Gaskin officiating. Burial in the United church cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
John Michael Heron Sr.
91, Sydney
John Michael Heron Sr., 91, of 114 Kennedy Ave., formerly of Bentinck Street, Sydney, passed away Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the elder son of the late Patrick and Annie (Cleary) Heron.
He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney. A respected member of the Sydney business community since 1930, John initially operated a taxi business and then became a hotel operator running the Royal Hotel on the Esplanade for over 30 years, finally retiring in 1974.
He is survived by one son, John M. Jr. (Debbie), Sydney, with whom he resided; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Brackett, Halifax, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Catherine Boucher, a son, Patrick Charles, a granddaughter, Danielle, seven sisters and a brother.
The late Mr. Heron will have no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. A. O’Connor officiating. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Sydney.

Joseph Leudy
83, New Waterford
Joseph Leudy, 83, 4359 Ellsworth Ave., New Waterford, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Mark and Sarah (Roach) Leudy. Mr. Leudy was a member of Mount Carmel Parish, a retired coal miner and avid hunter and fisherman.
Surviving are four daughters, Margaret (Dolly) (Mrs. John Rafferty), Youbou, B.C., Yvonne (Girley) (Mrs. Joseph Sutherland), Kitchener, Ont., Jeanette (Honey) (Mrs. David Ewing), New Victoria, Gloria (Mrs. David MacKinnon), New Waterford, with whom he resided, 22 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Catherine Katie Boudreau, three sons, Vincent, Arnie and Gerry, two brothers, John and Anthony, three sisters, Elizabeth Boudreau, Dora Jennex and Emma Blanchard.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Thursday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Friday at 10 a.m. Mount Carmel Church, Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Members of the New Waterford KOC are asked to assemble at the funeral home Thursday evening 7:30 p.m. for prayers.

Catherine MacDonald
89, Glace Bay
Catherine MacDonald, 89, of 10 Howe St., Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James and Jane (Murray) MacDonald.
Catherine was an adherent of Warden United Church, Glace Bay. She was a former member of the Silver Bells and the Golden Circle of Glace Bay. Catherine loved to travel and was an avid 45 card and bingo player. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving is a daughter, Edith “Edie” (Mrs. Edward Ball), Glace Bay, (with whom she resided), as well as her nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Mamie (Mrs. Edward Baird) and Jean (Mrs. Mark Gardiner), brothers, John (Jack) and Malcolm (Comet) MacDonald, stepfather, Simon Harte and half-brothers, Jim and Joe Harte.
Visitation for the late Catherine MacDonald was held Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be today (Wednesday) at 4 p.m. in V.J. McGillvray Funeral Home and Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Rev. Bill Matthews will be officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Donations in Catherine’s memory to a charity of choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
