George Budge
58, New Haven
George Budge, 58, of New Haven, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Neil’s Harbour, he was the son of Mrs. Blanche Budge, New Haven and the late Melvin Budge.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church, Neil’s Harbour. George studied at Dalhousie University, St. F.X. University and Mount St. Ann College (French Immersion Program). He graduated from the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College, Truro. He taught at the Ingonish School, Cabot High School and Neil’s Harbour Elementary School, becoming principal before his retirement. Since his retirement he was a substitute teacher for all the schools North of Smokey.
George was a member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, the Neil’s Harbour Home and School Association, the Cape Smokey Ski Club, Neil’s Harbour Co-op Board of Directors and more recently a member of the Cape Breton Highland Golf Links, Cape Breton Regional Housing Board and the CAP site in Neil’s Harbour.
George enjoyed playing golf, cards and was an avid Montreal Canadiens fan.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lorraine Chaisson; two sons, Merrill and Melvin, both at home; two sisters, Eleanor (Mrs. James Smith), New Haven and Marie (Mrs. Herbert Fraser), Dingwall; two brothers, Gordon Budge at home and Alex (Annie) Budge, New Haven. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one brother, Alan and one niece, Kimberley Chaisson.
Visitation for the late Mr. Budge will take place today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the All Souls Chapel, Neil’s Harbour. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church with the Rev. Richie Robinson officiating. Burial in St. Peter’s Presbyterian Cemetery, Neil’s Harbour.
Family flowers only, memorial donations may be made in trust to Merrill and Melvin Budge or the Epileptic Society.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
Margaret J. MacInnis
Sydney
Margaret J. MacInnis of 175 Rockdale Ave., Sydney, passed away suddenly Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Conception Bay, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Robert and Mariah (O’Connell) Mercer.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney, and in her younger years she was an active member of the CWL. Margaret was an avid bridge player.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by two daughters, Judith (Haley) MacInnis, Sydney, Carolyn (John) MacIsaac, Stoney Creek, Ont.; two sons, Jim (Mary Lou), Toronto, John (Jane), Mississauga; seven grandchildren, Laura, Melissa, Natalie, Julie, Meghan, Neill and Jessica and two great-grandchildren, Melanie and Justin. Mrs. MacInnis will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Hugh F. in 1994 and by a sister, Mary Thompson.
The late Mrs. MacInnis will have no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Followed immediately by a brief reception at the church. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Jennie Mae MacKinnon
65, Florence
Jennie Mae MacKinnon, 65, of Florence, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, March 21, 2000, surrounded by her loving family and friends at the Northside General Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born at Florence, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Harris) Sommers.
She was a member of the Wilson United Church, Florence. She was employed as a cleaner at T.L. Sullivan Junior High School, Florence retiring with 21 years of service.
Surviving are five daughters, Heather (Joey) Bungay, Alder Point, Julie (Brent) MacKinnon, Sydney Mines, Peggy (John) Hannigan, Margaree Center, Rayalene, at home, Mary Pearo, Alder Point; two sons, Frankie (Sharon), Grande Cache, Alta., Eric (Raylene), Florence; two sisters, Julia Swan, Florence and Dora, at home; one brother, Carl (Betty) Sommers, Sydney Mines. She also leaves behind the pride and joy of her life, her 10 grandchildren, Joey, Steven, Jordan, Emily Ann, Jenny Lee, Mitchell, Matthew, M.J., Alissa and Heather Candace. Aunt Jen will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, sisters, Selena Gale and Shirley in infancy.
The late Mrs. MacKinnon will have visitation today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Wilson United Church with Mrs. Linda Scherzinger officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Diabetic Association or the Wilson United Church Fund.
Sarah Louise Rolfe
76, Sydney
Sarah Louise Rolfe, 76, of Riverview Drive, Sydney River, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Wednesday, March 22, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Vardy) Cooper.
Sarah was a member of St. Marks Anglican Church and the CWL.
She is survived by her daughters, Sandra (Frank) Barrington, Sydney River and Beverly (Gerry) Wilmshurst, Dartmouth; son, Doug (Traci), Sydney; sisters, Olive Kilgar, Dartmouth, Shirley Gray, Brandon, Man. and Alice Gillis, Coxheath; brother, Roy Cooper, Sydney; eight grandchildren, Shawn, Chris, Lisa, David, Darren, Paula, Joseph and Danielle and one great-granddaughter, Jordyn.
Sarah was predeceased by her husband, Douglas and brothers, Harold and Lawrence.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with funeral service held at St. Marks Anglican Church, Friday, 2 p.m. with the Rev. James Purchase officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Theresa Evangeline (Vange) Laffin, 73, of Bras d’Or, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 23, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Alder Point, she was the daughter of the late Mark and Beatrice (Harrietha) LeBlanc.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or and the Bras d’Or Pensioners Club.
She is survived by her husband, Nicholas; her daughter, Gerry (Pat), Alder Point; her sons, Earl (Judy), Pictou, Terry (Bev), Ronnie (Janet), both of Bras d’Or, and Alex, Halifax. She also leaves to mourn 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; her sisters, Camilla Oliver, Dora Jenneson, both of London, Ont., Helen (Lawrence) Jessome, North Sydney and her brothers, Luigi, Anthony (Mary), Adrian (May), all of London, Ont.
She was predeceased by her children, Joseph, Michael, Bill and Linda and her sisters, Mary, Edna, Elvena and Geraldine and her brother, Michael.
Visitation today (Friday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis & Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made in her memory to the Palliative Care, Northside General Hospital.
