Robert Clark, 82, of 35 DeMarco St., Sydney Mines, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
He is survived by his son, Robert (Rose), North Sydney.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
Donald S. (Hopper) MacLeod
85, Port Morien
Donald S. (Hopper) MacLeod, 85, longtime resident of Birch Street, Port Morien and more recently of Bayview Senior Citizens’ Complex, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, in the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late John (Jack) and Bessie Alice (Samuels) MacLeod.
He is survived by sons, Donald (Judy), Laird (Bucky), daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) (Mrs. Kenneth Rankin), all of Port Morien. Their mother, Mrs. Ruth (Peach) MacLeod, predeceased him.
Also survived by sisters, Arabel (Anne) (Mrs. Harold Sacks), Ontario, Mary Bisson (Wilfred), Jean (Mrs. Michael Curry), Glace Bay; grandchildren, Sherri Lynn and Liam MacLeod; sister-in-law, Sadie MacLeod (Roy), New Hampshire and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Laird and Roy.
In his early days he was actively involved in a variety of sports including rugby. At a young age he began working with his grandfather at Samuels Meat Market, Glace Bay. For many years he was employed with Shores Chain Stores, as a meatcutter at various outlets and managed store No. 5 in Port Morien until its closure. He was co-owner of Modern Clothing Store, Port Morien with the late Harold Wadden. Following the closing of Shores Store No. 5, he started Hopper’s Grocery which is presently operated by his children.
Hopper played a major role in the establishment of the Eastern Suburban Little League Association. He was a former fire chief of the Port Morien Volunteer Fire Department. He was very actively involved in the Nova Scotia Fish and Game Association and a keen supporter of the N.S. Wildlife Federation and Port Morien Wildlife Association.
Over the years Hopper supported many community organizations especially those that provided recreational opportunities for youth. His love of the outdoors especially hunting and fishing has been passed on to his children. Hopper loved to sing and have a good time, he will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a real character with a great sense of humour.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today (Thursday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A service at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jim Chisholm officiating will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien.

William S. (Bill) Penny
79, Sydney Mines
William J. (Bill) Penny, 79, a resident of Miners’ Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines, formerly of Shore Road, Florence, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, after a lengthy illness of Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late John Charles and Elizabeth (Penny) Moore.
He was a member of St. Stephen’s Parish, Florence. Bill loved to play hockey in his younger years and was a devoted dad and husband. He was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corp. for 37 years before his retirement.
He is survived by Annabelle (Laffin), his loving wife of 58 years and his nine children, Bill (Rose), Alexander (Barb), both of Florence, Erwin (Bonnie), Little Pond, Brian (Gloria), Boularderie, Christopher (Angie), Alder Point, Timmy (Michelle), Sydney Mines, Rebecca (Cyril) Reashore, London, Ont., Joan (Thomas) Nicholas, Little Narrows and Diane (Armand) Forest, North Sydney; brother, Silas Jeffries, North Sydney and sisters, Viola, New Brunswick and Mariam, Ontario. Also surviving are 29 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, who will greatly miss their papa Bill.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three children in infancy, his son, Peter and daughters, Irene and Patricia, brothers, John and Joseph, sisters, Annie Jessie and Elizabeth.
Visitation today (Thursday) 7-9 p.m. and Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen’s Church, Florence with the Rev. A.D. Campbell officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Society.

76, New Waterford
Fiorentino (Nook) Villa, 76, of 782 Downe St., New Waterford, passed away suddenly Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, following a brief illness.
Cremation has taken place. Family will receive friends, Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in McLellan Bros. Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held in St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan at 10 a.m. Saturday with Fr. Lester Marchand officiating. Burial in the Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Jessie Murdena MacNeil
78, Red Point
Jessie Murdena MacNeil, 78, Red Point, Victoria County, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Malagawatch, Inverness County, she was a daughter of the late Lauchie and Annie (Campbell) Moody.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Mission Church. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, a faithful sister, and the truest friend.
She was the wife of the late John Alexander MacNeil.
She is survived by daughters, Shirley Baldasaro, Sommerville, Mass., Betty MacNeil, Estmere, Victoria County, Ivadelle MacLean, Orangedale, Inverness County, Zelda MacNeil, Sydney; son, James, at home; sister, Florence MacLean, Orangedale, Inverness County; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son, Anson, sisters, Elizabeth and Irene, brothers, William and Dan.
Visitation 2-9 p.m. today (Friday) in Sacred Heart Mission Church, MacKinnon Harbour.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Mission Church with the Rev. Fred Morley officiating. Burial will be in MacKinnon Harbour cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. Columba Building Fund.

Joseph Cryer
85, Sydney/Glace Bay
Joseph Cryer, 85, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, and a former resident of 47 Campbell St., Sydney, passed away Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at the Breton Bay Nursing Home.
Born in Louisbourg, he was the son of the late John and Annie Cryer.
He served in the merchant marines. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter. At one time Joseph lived with his sister, Helen Gardiner in Glace Bay.
He was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers.
Visitation will take place today (Tuesday) from 9 a.m. until funeral service at 10 a.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Cremation to follow. Burial will take place in St. John’s Cemetery.
