Rita Wilks (nee MacNeil) peacefully with her family and friends by her side at the Scarborough General Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, in her 83rd year.
Predeceased by her beloved husband, Norm and her son, Chester
Loving mother of Joan (Mrs. Thomas Attwood), Ronnie (and his wife Billie MacKenzie), Lois (Mrs. Roy Legere), Winnie (Mrs. Lorne Nicholson), Joyce (Mrs. Cliff Morrison) and Terry (and his wife Alice MacKenzie). Dear sister of Ambrose Deveaux, Roy Deveaux, Winnie Fenton and Mary McMahon. Mother-in-law of Lonnie MacKenzie. Cherished grandmother of 17 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Rita will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by many close family and friends in Ontario and Nova Scotia.
A funeral mass will be held at the St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church Thursday, Feb. 3. Cremation.
Donations to a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.
Ernest Leo Doucette
71, Ingonish Beach
Mr. Ernest Leo Doucette, 71, of Ingonish Beach, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born at Ingonish Beach, he was the son of the late Leo and Ivy (O’Brian) Doucette.
Ernie was retired from the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. He was an avid bingo player and card player. He was a quiet man who loved his family and friends and enjoyed watching the birds testing out his feeders. He was always ready to help others, never judged the actions of others and loved to tell a good story.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty Gillis), daughter, Erna (Mrs. Lindsay Hatcher), New Haven, son, Terry (Mory), Halifax, daughter, Lynn Winnipeg, Man., daughter, Joan (Mrs. Bob Singleton), Quesnel, B.C., son, Paul (Lucille), Moncton, N.B., son, Peter, Waterville, daughter, Maureen (Mrs. Jim Singleton), Abbotsford, B.C., and son, Darren, Abbotsford, B.C. He is also survived by his brother, Gerald, Ingonish and his sister, Betty (Mrs. Cyril McDow), Sydney. “Grampy” will be sadly missed by his seven granddaughters, Tara, Chelsea, L.A., Meaghan, Jenna, Erin and Jill, three grandsons, Darryl, Mark and Jeff and one great-granddaughter, Hayden.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Joe, Teddy, Cyril and Gene.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish, today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Peters Church with Rev. John Morrison officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cancer Society of Nova Scotia.
Sheila Audrey Laidlaw
61, Sydney Mines
Sheila Laidlaw, 61, of Convent Street, Sydney Mines, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of Bernadette (Young) Evans and the late James Evans.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines, where she was very active in church activities. She was also a volunteer at the Sydney Mines Food Bank.
She is survived by her husband, James; her sons, Don, Terry, Billy, Paul and Jay and her daughter, Sheila Marie. Also surviving is her granddaughter, Miranda; a brother, James (Anne) and a sister, Gayle (Mrs. Sam Ianetti).
Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines Funeral services will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, Friday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sydney Mines Food Bank.
Dr. Sidney McNee
79, Glace Bay
Dr. Sidney McNee, 79, of 6 Prince St., Glace Bay, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
He was the son of the late James McNee and Mary (McNee) Fraser.
He was predeceased by a sister, Agnes Ferguson.
He is survived by his wife, the former Anna Forbes, Glace Bay.

Catherine (Kaye) Noseworthy

Catherine (Kaye) Noseworthy, of Green Acres Drive, Sydney River, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, Kaye was a daughter of the late Hugh N. and Katie (Gillis) Hill.
She was a member of Sydney River United Protestant Church. At one time, she was employed as a sales clerk at Modern Ladies Wear, Sydney, Smart Shop, Jacobson’s, and she retired from Fashion’s Fancy, Sydney Shopping Centre. She is the last member of her immediate family.
Kaye is survived by her two daughters, Sharon (Hubert) Poirier and Valerie (Ken) Keller, Sydney River; her son, Howie (Colleen), Coxheath, and six grandchildren, Derek, Deborah, Craig, Natalie, Dwayne and Jonathan.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years, Clarence George (Cal), sisters, Thelma Richardson and Edith Huntley and brothers, Matthew and George.
Visitation will held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with a funeral service held at Sydney River United Protestant Church, Friday 2 p.m. with Rev. Alan McIntosh officiating. Interment in Alfred Smith Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Sydney River United Protestant Church Memorial Fund or to a charity of one’s choice.
Wilma Elizabeth (Billy) Parsons
69, Eastern Passage
Wilma Elizabeth (Billy) Parsons, 69, Eastern Passage, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at the New Halifax Infirmary QE11.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John T. and Josephine (Jessome) MacDonald of Arthur Street, Glace Bay.
She was a former member of St. Anne’s and St. Leo’s Catholic Churches, Glace Bay.
Surviving are her husband, William (Bud); daughter, Jacqueline Ann, son, John Keith, both of Eastern Passage; sisters, Anna Kennedy and Carmelita MacKinnon, both of Glace Bay.
Predeceased by son, David Wayne, two daughters in infancy and brother, John Joseph.
Visitation, prayer service and reception 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, Portland Street, Dartmouth. Burial in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Eastern Passage.

John James Young

John James Young, 28 of New Waterford passed away Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999 at home.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of Johnny Young and the late Diane (Peckham) Young.
A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Union Grove Cemetery, Fr. Donald McGillivray officiating where burial will take place under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, New Waterford.
