Michael G. Dicks, 14, a resident of Georges River, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of Greg and Janet (MacDonald) Dicks, Georges River.
He was a Grade 8 student at Dr. T.L. Sullivan Junior High School. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or.
Michael was a valued hockey player for his team, the North Sydney Bantam A Tesma Senators and valued baseball player with Georges River. He also enjoyed fishing and dirt biking.
Surviving are his father and mother, Greg and Janet Dicks; a sister, Jaclyn, at home; grandparents, Ad and Jerome MacDonald, Sydney Mines and George and Pauline Dicks, North Sydney; great-grandmothers, Phyllis Dicks, Northside Guest Home and Margaret MacDonald, Miners Memorial Manor; aunts and uncles, Daniel and Ellen (MacDonald) Clarke, Sydney Mines, Gilles and Linda (MacDonald) Maillet, Sydney, George and Debbie (MacDonald) Podetz, Sydney Mines, Joseph and Brenda (MacDonald) Andrea, Sydney Mines, Cyril and Corena (Boutilier) Dicks, North Sydney, Lowell and Wendy (Dicks) MacDonald, Florence and Kenny Dicks, North Sydney. Also survived by 18 loving cousins and close friends, Curtis White, Nick Jessome, Kevin Livingstone, Gardiner MacNeil, Tyler Leblanc and Matthew Alderson.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Friday) Feb. 4 in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with the Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

77, Glace Bay
Michael Patrick Kennedy, 77, of 232 Dominion St., Glace Bay, passed away Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, surrounded by his family.
Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete at this time, are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
James N. MacDonald
76, Glace Bay
James (Jim) MacDonald, 76, formerly of 15 Hillside Ave., Glace Bay, and a resident of Seaview Manor for the past two years, entered into eternal rest surrounded by his family on Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Manor.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John D. and Margaret (Moore) MacDonald.
He was a member of St. Anne’s Parish, Glace Bay. Jim was employed with Devco for 44 years, retiring from Phalen Colliery in 1986.
Surviving are his wife, the former Bernette MacCormick; daughters, Sandra (Ron MacDonald), B.C., Donna, Sydney,; sons, Robert and Keith (Trudy), Glace Bay, grandchildren, Danielle, Amanda, David, Darrell, Matthew, Kailyn, Mitchell, Stephen, Kendra, Alexandra and Christopher; sisters, Deannie MacDonald, Laura Adams, Georgie MacDonald and Patsy MacDonald, brother, Tommy (Margaret), all of Glace Bay. Numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim was predeceased by a daughter, Janice, brothers, Donnie, Melvin and Bobby and sisters, Catherine MacIntyre and Rachael MacDonald.
Visitation for the late Mr. MacDonald will be held Sunday 2-4 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Brenda Marie (MacKenzie) MacNeil
40, Howie Centre
Brenda MacNeil of Wildwood Drive, Howie Centre, passed away Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family, following a courageous six-year battle with cancer (melanoma), the last two years being her greatest challenge.
Born in Sydney, Brenda was the daughter of Mary E. (MacNeil) MacKenzie and the late Gordon MacKenzie of Northside East Bay. Brenda lived most of her life at Northside East Bay.
Brenda graduated from Riverview High School in 1977, and then from the College of Cape Breton in 1979 with Business Technology majoring in accounting. She then began a career with Sobeys working with them for 21 years, beginning as a cashier in the Sydney River store and moving up to the position of Front End Manager at the Sydney store on Prince Street, where she worked until forced to leave by illness two years ago.
Brenda was a loving and devoted wife of 17 years to her husband, Francis and a most loving and caring mother to her three children, Daniel, 15, Melissa, 12 and Katelyn, 11. She is also survived by her three sisters, Elizabeth Gillis (Kevin), Stellarton, Darlene, East Bay, Cathy Burt (Trevor), Sydney and her two brothers, Murdoch (Diny), Halifax and Roddy (Ellen), Coxheath. Also surviving are her mother-in-law, Ellen MacNeil, Baddeck; sisters-in-law, Gladys (Cameron), Jean (Duncan), Verna (Ernie), Sheila (Bruce), Dena (Hector), and Marie; brothers-in-law, Hughie, Michael (Michelle), Bruno (Marilyn), Murdock (Jeanne), Carleton (Joan). Brenda is also survived by many nieces and nephews and her special Godchild Matthew.
Besides her father, Gordon MacKenzie, Brenda was predeceased by a brother, Gordon Joseph in infancy, her father-in-law, Dan R.;, brother-in-law, Melvin and several aunts and uncles.
Visitation for Brenda will be at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, East Bay, Monday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Frank Abbass officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society for the Research and Cure of Malignant Melanoma, the Cape Breton Regional Palliative Care or a charity of your choice.
Brenda’s last wish to all those who touched her life is to protect yourself and your children from the sun at all times. The damage begins at a young age and doesn’t show until later in life. A golden tan is not an essential part of life.
Brenda, we will love and miss you forever.
Bessie M. (Cumming) Brown-Wilkinson
86, Low Point
Bessie M. (Cumming) Brown-Wilkinson of 225 MacKesey Dr., Low Point, passed away on Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, she was the eldest daughter of the late Dunn and Kathryn Anne (Roy) Cumming.
She was a longtime resident of New Victoria and a member of St. Joseph’s Parish. Bessie owned and operated a very successful beauty salon in New Victoria. She was a sewing instructor with community education at the Low Point School. Later in Toronto, she undertook a new career in the fashion industry with Stanley Walkers.
Surviving are her only daughter, Kathryn MacKenzie, Ottawa; three sons, Robert (Doreen), Dartmouth, Roy (Sherry), New Waterford, Francis (Muriel), Barrie, Ont.; sister, Frances Cumming, Waltham, Mass., U.S.A.; brother, Allie Cumming, Halifax; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren. She will be missed by her caregivers, Butch and Eleanor Gillis.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Robert and second husband, John, her sons, Hilary and David, infant grandson, Francis, sisters, Jean and Christine and brothers, Roy and John.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Saturday, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Monday, Feb. 7, 10 a.m. with Fr. Everett MacDow officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the N.S. Kidney Foundation.
