Michael Patrick Kennedy
77, Glace Bay
Michael Patrick (Pat) Kennedy, 77, of 232 Dominion St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Center.
Born in Birch Grove May 22, 1922, he was the son of the late James and Catherine (MacGillivary) Kennedy. Pat was employed as a miner for 43 years with the Dominion Coal Company and Cape Breton Development Corporation. He was a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces stationed in Halifax during the Second World War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. No. 40 and also a member of St. Anthony Church, Glace Bay.
Pat was an avid woodworker whose favourite pastime was building toys for his many grandchildren who he loved dearly. Pat had a great sense of humour as well as a strong faith and devotion. He loved his family as they brought a great joy into his life.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 58 years, Catherine (McIntyre) Kennedy; four sons, Patrick (Karen), Richard (Diane), Elliott (Patsy) and James, all of Glace Bay; six daughters, Donna (Butch MacDonald), New Waterford, Elaine (Bill Gale), Sydney, Joan (Bill Delaney), Glace Bay, Kathy (Mike Hurley), Glace Bay, Maureen (Horace Lovell), New Waterford and Colleen (Gerard Bagnell), Nanacivik, Nunavut. Also surviving are three brothers, Paul and Thomas, both of Glace Bay and Gerald, Stellarton; three sisters, Joveta, Sudbury, Ont., Hilda and Maria, both of Glace Bay; 18 grandchildren David, Dana, Dawn, Gerald, Kerri Ann, Todd, Alana, Shauna, Tara, Aleisha, Lindsay, Melissa, Colin, Robert, Mark, Michael, Nadara, Kayla and three great-grandchildren Jocelyn, Connor and Joseph.
He was predeceased by three brothers William, Daniel and Ignatius.
Visitation took place Sunday, 7-9 p.m., and will take place today 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from St. Anthony’s Church with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial in parish cemetery.
Archibald (Archie) MacAdam
83, Sydney
Archibald (Archie) MacAdam, 83, resided at Taigh Na Mara, formerly of 114 Intercolonial St., Sydney, N.S., passed away peacefully Saturday morning, Feb. 5, 2000.
Born at MacAdam’s Lake, Northside East Bay, he was the son of the late Duncan and Jane (Gillis) MacAdam. Archie was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. No. 12, Sydney. Archie was employed for 30 years at the Sydney Radar Base as a carpenter. After retirement he worked for a number of years at Holy Angel’s Convent.
Surviving are his daughter Anne Marie MacVicar and son Ronnie MacAdam (Glenna); grandchildren, Irene, Coady, Bhreagh, Ainslie and Kiley, all of Sydney. Survived also by his sister Isabel MacPherson (Jack) and brothers, Johnnie (Mary) and Angus Steve (Sis) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Archie was predeceased by his loving wife Irene (Rene) (MacKinnon) MacAdam; one sister Mary Agnes and three brothers Ronald James, Jimmy and Danny.
Archie will be greatly missed for his great sense of humour; zest for life and dedication to his trade that characterized his life.
Visitation for Archie took place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and will be held today (Monday) from 3-5, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. from Sacred Heart Church, Sydney with Father Leonard MacKinnon and Father Anthony O’Connor officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Joseph Anthony MacNeil (Joe Butternut)
North Sydney
Joseph Anthony MacNeil (Joe Butternut) passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney Mines Dec. 11, 1927, he was the son of Angus and Alice (Ronayne) MacNeil. He was employed for many years with Eastern Bakeries and Brookfield Dairy and was also co-owner of Princess Beverage Room for several years. He was an ardent supporter and fund raiser of youth soccer and minor hockey and formerly active in organizing curling and adult hockey. Most recently he was a member of the North Sydney Historical Society. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He will be greatly missed by his daughter Kimberley (David Grant), Bridgewater, N.S., and his son Stuart in North Sydney; grandsons Travis and Ryan and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers Neil, Angus (Gussie), Jack and Steven and sisters Annie Young, Sadie Jackman and Alice in infancy.
At Joe’s request there will be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
Alphonsus McIntyre
67, Glace Bay
Alphonsus McIntyre, 67, of 115 Park St., Glace Bay passed away Feb. 5, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Isadore and Bridget (Bates) McIntyre. Alphonsus was a member of St. Anne’s Church in Glace Bay. He was a welder by trade and at one time he worked in North Sydney. Alphonsus was a veteran of the Korean War and was wounded in action.
Surviving are his wife the former Loretta Poirier; daughter Charlotte (Mrs. Darren Harris), Glace Bay; a sister Kay (Mr. and Mrs. Bob MacIsaac), Boston; several nieces and nephews and a granddaughter Kayleigh.
Alphonsus was predeceased by a brother Joseph Jr. and a sister Helen Mary McKinnon.
Visitation will take place Monday 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church with Father Cliff Bisson officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Alphonsus, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Diabetic Association.
James Junior Whalen
66, Glace Bay
James Junior Whalen, 66, of 225 King Edward Street, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully at home Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late James and Sadie (Waye) Whalen. Mr. Whalen was a member of St. Ann’s Church and was a former employee of Devco. Mr. Whalen was for many years, a long-time member of the North St. Club and director of the North St. Police Youth Group and a member of the Army Navy and Air Force.
Mr. Whalen is survived by his wife Ruth (Copley) Whalen; two sons James (Marline) and Raymond, both in Glace Bay; daughter, Joan (Mr. Alf Robinson), Alberta; five grandchildren Hughie, Robert Whalen and Tierney Whalen, Bobbi and Mrs. Martin Robinson; brothers Joseph (Myrna), Ont., Henry, Glace Bay, Llewellyn (Pasty), Rannie, (Marilyn), all of Glace Bay; sisters, Velma (Mrs. Lawrence Wadden), Glace Bay, Mary Lou (Mrs. Art Billard), Glace Bay, Ursula Hines, Glace Bay, Hughena (Mrs. Allie McIntyre), Ontario, Neea Fowler, Glace Bay, Lucy Jackson, Glace Bay and a special niece, Donna Grant.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and family would appreciate cards only.
Arrangements are entrusted to Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay.
Alexis Marie Sapier
25, Eskasoni
Alexis Marie (Marshall) Sapier, 25, of 4686 Shore Rd., Eskasoni, died suddenly on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at her home.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of Alexander Marshall of Chapel Island and the late Mary Anastasia (Gloade) Marshall. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni.
Surviving are her husband, Michael J., Eskasoni; two daughters, Mary Anastasia Rose, Kateri Marie Ann and her son, Michael Jr. (Bubba), all at home and her stepmother, Greta (Gloade) Marshall, Chapel Island. Also surviving are two sisters, Nancy Ann and Veronica Rose, both of Chapel Island; three brothers, Gerry Craig, Alan Peter and Vernon Wesley, all of Chapel Island and by numerous aunts and uncles and by a niece, Geneva.
She was predeceased by a brother, Alexander (Kwis), by a sister, Eugenie and by an infant sister, Mary.
The late Mrs. Sapier will have visitation at the residence of her mother-in-law Viney Sapier on Shore Road after 7 p.m. Thursday. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Church with the Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni, under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
