Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Peck
Chicago, Ill.
Dr. Gerard (Jerry) Peck, DVM, passed away Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, in Chicago, Ill.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Joseph and Laura Peck.
He was a graduate of St. FX University and Gulf Veterinary College. Upon graduation he established a veterinarian practice in Chicago having owned his own hospitals and retired last July. He was president of the American Animal Hospital Association and was appointed as a commissioner of the State of Illinois Horse Racing Commission.
He is survived by his wife, Janette (Russell), daughter, Heather, son, Thomas, three grandchildren; sisters, Marie Hartigan, Sydney Mines, Joan Ryan, Dartmouth, Helen Middlehamp, Kelowna, B.C.; brothers, Brendan, Bernard, Sydney Mines and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral mass and burial took place in Chicago.
Suzanne Theresa (MacNeil) Desrosiers
72, New Waterford
Suzanne Theresa (MacNeil) Desrosiers, 72, of 3492 Wilson Ave., New Waterford, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, surrounded by her family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Visitation will take place today 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral is Friday at 11 a.m. from St. Agnes Church with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Since Theresa’s passing, her 20th grandchild was born on Feb. 8.
Daniel Hugh (Dan Hughie) McPherson
78, New Waterford
Daniel Hugh (Dan Hughie) McPherson, 78, of 567 King St., New Waterford, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Halifax.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Dan and Effie (McLellan) McPherson.
Dan Hughie was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford and a third degree member of New Waterford KOC Council 3209. He was also a fourth degree member of the Father William B. MacLeod Assembly.
He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15, New Waterford.
He was former owner-operator of the former Stag ’N Doe Beverage Room. Dan Hughie was an avid gardener and will be remembered for his love of working in his yard. He was also a long-standing member of Lingan Golf and Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, the former Irene Vallas; two daughters, Paula (Bob Jason), St. Catharines, Ont. and Shauna (John Purdy), Bedford, N.S.; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth (Lish Wilcox) and Audrey Mackie, both of New Waterford; four grandchildren, Michael Jason and Janet, Robert and Jamie Purdy.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Martin.
Visitation for the late Mr. McPherson will be Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford with Fr. Donald McGillivray officiating. Cremation will follow. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Members of New Waterford KOC Council 3209 are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Eileen Patricia (Doran) Nicholson
52, Sydney
Eileen Patricia (Doran) Nicholson, 52, Sydney, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, peacefully at home.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of Janet (Wambolt) Doran and the late William Nicholson.
She was a loving mother and grandmother, sister and aunt.
She is survived by her estranged husband, John Nicholson; daughters, Janet and Roberta, both of Sydney; granddaughters, Rénee and Janis, both of Sydney; brothers, William, Charles, George (Jane), Ray, Richard (Elizabeth) and sisters, Ida, Erna, all of Sydney, Shirley (Randy) Wilson, Langley, B.C., Margaret (Patrick) Fitzgerald, Lingan Road, Charlotte (Keith) Pyne, Howie Centre, Charlene (Frederick) Pope, Halifax and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service from the chapel Thursday, time to be announced.
Albert (Ab) Graham Pike
89, Seabright, N.S.
Albert (Ab) Graham Pike, 89, of the Seabright Rest Home, Seabright, N.S., formerly of Sydney, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at the QE II, Halifax.
Born in Sydney, Ab was the son of the late Samuel and Maude Pike.
He was a member and Elder of Trinity United Church and was one of the founding members of the Trinity Male Chorus. Ab was retired from the boiler shop at Sysco and for many years was a scout leader with the Sydney Boy Scouts.
Ab is survived by his daughter, Nancy Lovett, Queensland, N.S. and son, Graham (Ginny), Florida, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian Leah (Tavener).
Visitation will held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a funeral service held at Trinity United Church, Friday 10 a.m. with Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to Trinity United Church or the N.S. Lung Association.
Viney Rose Sapier
Eskasoni
Baby Viney Rose Sapier, of 4686 Shore Rd., Eskasoni, died suddenly on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000.
She was the infant daughter of Michael Sapier of Eskasoni and the late Alexis (Marshall) Sapier.
She is survived by two sisters, Mary Anastasia Rose and Kateri Marie Ann, both at home and brother, Michael Jr. (Bubba), at home; maternal grandfather, Alexander Marshall, Chapel Island and grand step-mother Greta (Gloade) Marshall, Chapel Island. Also surviving are paternal grandmother, Viney Rose Sapier, Eskasoni and common-law grandfather, Louis Marshall; three aunts, Dolores Marie Googoo, Pauline Dennis and Elisha Sapier, two uncles, Vincent Googoo and Louis Marshall Jr.
Predeceased by her maternal grandmother, Mary Anastasia (Gloade) Marshall and her brother, Louie Thomas George Sapier.
The late baby Viney Rose Sapier will have visitation at the residence of Viney Sapier, Shore Road, after 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Church with the Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
