Eileen Patricia (Doran) Nicholson
52, Sydney
Eileen Patricia (Doran) Nicholson, 52, Sydney, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, peacefully at home.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of Janet (Wambolt) Doran and the late William Doran.
She was a loving mother and grandmother, sister and aunt.
She is survived by her estranged husband, John Nicholson; daughters, Janet and Roberta, both of Sydney; granddaughters, Rénee and Janis, both of Sydney; brothers, William, Charles, George (Jane), Ray, Richard (Elizabeth) and sisters, Ida, Erna, all of Sydney, Shirley (Randy) Wilson, Langley, B.C., Margaret (Patrick) Fitzgerald, Lingan Road, Charlotte (Keith) Pyne, Howie Centre, Charlene (Frederick) Pope, Halifax and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held in Sydney Memorial Chapel from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday. Funeral service from the chapel to be announced.

Daniel Hugh (Dan Hughie) McPherson
78, New Waterford
Daniel Hugh (Dan Hughie) McPherson, 78, of 567 King Street, New Waterford, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Halifax.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Dan and Effie (McLellan) McPherson.
Dan Hughie was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford and a third degree member of New Waterford KOC Council 3209. He was also a fourth degree member of the Father William B. MacLeod Assembly.
He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15, New Waterford.
He was former owner-operator of the former Stag 'N Doe Beverage Room. Dan Hughie was an avid gardener and will be remembered for his love of working in his yard. He was also a long-standing member of Lingan Golf and Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, the former Irene Vallas; two daughters, Paula (Bob Jason), St. Catharines, Ont. and Shauna (John Purdy), Bedford, N.S.; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth (Lish Wilcox) and Audrey Mackie, both of New Waterford; four grandchildren, Michael Jason and Janet, Robert and Jamie Purdy.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Martin McPherson and Joe McLellan.
Visitation for the late Mr. McPherson will be today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford with Fr. Donald McGillivray officiating. Cremation will follow. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Members of New Waterford KOC Council 3209 are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Phillip MacKinnon
67, New Waterford
Phillip MacKinnon, age 67, of 3097 Lynwood Dr., New Waterford, passed into God's arms peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lillian (Cunliffe) MacKinnon of New Victoria. Phillip was a member of Mount Carmel Parish. He was employed as a lobster fisherman until his retirement two years ago.
He is survived by his wife, the former Carol Hawco; two sons, Gerard (Karen), New Waterford, Ricky, at home and one daughter, Karen (Rob) Bourque, New Waterford. Phillip is also survived by four very special grandchildren, Jonathan and Shelby MacKinnon and Sonia and Carolyn Bourque; four brothers, Billy (Eileen), Peter (Terry), Jack (Lynn) and Micky, all of Sydney; five sisters, Evelyn Lund (Jimmy), Dutch Brook, Annie Mae MacKinnon, Melinda MacKinnon, Margaret MacNeil, all of New Victoria and Sabina MacKinnon, Halifax.
Besides his parents, Phillip was predeceased by a brother, Danny MacKinnon, one sister, Mary Taylor and one brother, Billy in infancy.
Visitation for the late Phillip MacKinnon will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Palliative Care in Phillip's memory.

James A. Heighton
New Hampshire
James Andrew (Andy) Heighton, 6 LaPerle Ave. and a former longtime resident of Lawrence and Andover, Mass., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born May 7, 1922, in Pictou, N.S., Canada, the son of Stanley and Phoebe (Cormier) Heighton.
He resided in Exeter for about 12 years. He was a Canadian war veteran of the Second World War. Prior to retirement, he had been employed with the Honeywell Corp.
Family members include his wife of 56 years, Marion (Dingwall) Heighton, Exeter; a son, James (Stan) Heighton, Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Pamela (Dallaire) Hartford, Salem and Faye (Cormier) Castonguay, Nottingham; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother, Roland Heighton, Nova Scotia; two sisters, Rhoda Rhoades and Lillian Jackson, both of British Columbia; nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Thursday from 2 4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from the funeral home. The Rev. John Denson of Christ Church will officiate.
Spring burial will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery in Kingston.

Neil Hugh "Scorchy" MacVicar
72, Halifax
Neil Hugh "Scorchy" MacVicar, 72 of Halifax, died Feb. 10, 2000, at the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Glace Bay on Dec. 4, 1927, he was a son of the late Charles and Edith (Anderson) MacVicar. After graduation from Morrison High School, Glace Bay, he attended Acadia University, graduating in 1949. He late attended Springfield College, Springfield, Mass., where he received a M.Ed. He taught physical education in Campbellton, N.B., Halifax and Fort Erie, Ont. He and his family spent an exchange teaching year in South Hampton, England in 1957 58. From 1960-63 he taught and coached at Acadia University enjoying great success especially with his 1964-65 volleyball teams. Returning to Halifax in 1965, he taught social studies at Queen Elizabeth High School and later served as vice-principal of Cornwallis Junior High until retirement in 1988. In 1972-73, he and his family spent a year's sabbatical in Glasgow, Scotland where he enjoyed researching his family roots. Varsity sports were a large part of his university life at Acadia where he played hockey and rugby. He was a long time member of the Waegwoltic Club where he began playing tennis. He also coached the Nova Scotia Men's Volley Ball team that completed in the 1972 Canada Winter Games, Saskatoon, as well he coached school teams at Queen Elizabeth High School and Cornwallis Junior High. He was inducted into the Acadia University Sports Hall of Fame both as an athlete and coach. He loved singing and was a member of many church choirs. He was a member of Rockingham United Church.
He is survived by daughters, Joan MacVicar and her husband Rob Tremaine, Martha MacVicar and her husband Danny Beck, all of Halifax, Sarah MacVicar, Hong Kong; son Donnie MacVicar and his wife Lisa, Toronto; sister Martha MacVicar, Toronto; three brothers Charles (Arline), Glace Bay, James (Isabel), Pictou Co., Donald (Ann), Bedford; grandchildren Andrew, Kate, Sarah and Caroline Tremaine, Alexandra, Emily and Sarah Beck, Neil and Priya MacVicar and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by sister Katherine Austin (1997).
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday, 2-4 p.m. Sunday in the J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Rockingham United Church, Flamingo Dr. with the Rev. Allen Darby officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay, at a later date.
Donations to the Alzheimer Society or any charity would be appreciated.
