John B. MacGillivray
Sydney
John B. MacGillivray of 245 Cabot St., formerly of Northend Sydney, died, Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late Colin and Margaret (Curry) MacGillivray. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish. Mr. MacGillivray was retired after working over forty years with Sydney Steel where he was employed as a timekeeper and paymaster. He was a former director of the Sydney Co-op. He will be remembered for organizing the Babe Ruth Baseball League in the 1950's. Since retirement, he was well known as an avid bridge player who was a member and past officer of the Cape Breton Bridge Club.
Surviving are his wife the former Mary Martin; two daughters Anne Therese MacNeil, London, Ont. and Patrice, Santa Monica, Ca.; three sons, Sean, Thousand Oaks, Ca., Bernard, Mississauga, Ont. and Stephen, Ojai, Ca.; sister Mary MacGillivray, Boston and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Frances and three brothers Curry, Sidney and Charles (Duffy).
Visitation for the late Mr. MacGillivray will be held today (Friday) from 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Sacred Heart Church, George St., Sydney. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

John James Vincent MacDonald
76, Halifax
John James Vincent MacDonald, 76, Halifax, died February 9, 2000, in Glades Lodge, Halifax.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late John and Mary Ann (MacCormick) MacDonald. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Merchant Navy from 1940-1945. He was employed as a supervisor with Ben's Bread and later with Maritime Moving and Storage and retired as an Insurance agent with Prudential Insurance. Surviving are son, Russell, Halifax; brother, Angus, Toronto; sisters, Helen Roach, New Waterford, Anne MacDonald, Sydney, and Cecelia Curry, Stellarton, and several nieces end nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Priscilia P. "Sally" MacEachern; brother, Bernard; sister, Mary "Mish" Power.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, Halifax. Funeral 10 a.m. Saturday, in St. Michael's Roman; Catholic Church, Rev. Ronald Cairns officiating. Burial at a later date at Oakridge Memory Gardens, Sackville.
Michael Kliza
84, New Waterford
Michael Kliza, 84, formerly of 3541 Wilson Ave., New Waterford, passed away on Feb. 9, 2000, in the Camp Hill Veterans Hospital, Halifax.
Born in New Waterford, Michael was the son of Paul and Josephine (Zeilinski) Kliza. He was a member of St. Agnes Parish and attended St. Agnes School. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Canadian Grenadier Guards, 22nd Canadian Armoured Regiment. Michael worked as a diesel mechanic at #12 colliery and the machine shop in Glace Bay. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, bowler and dart player who enjoyed life with his family and friends.
Surviving are his former wife, Margaret (Harrison) Chisholm, London, Ont., daughter Josephine (John) MacNeil, Dartmouth; sons Michael (Marilyn), Hubley, N.S. , Francis (Shelly), London, 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Anthony Kliza.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held on Monday, Feb. 14, 10 a.m. St. Agnes Church, Father Bob Neville officiating. Burial in St. Michael's Cemetery, River Ryan.
Donations to the Parkinson's Society in Michael's memory would be appreciated.

D'Arcy Joseph Thomson
56, Glace Bay
D'Arcy Thomson, 56, of 275 MacIntyre Lane, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late James and Clara Thomson.
D'Arcy was employed by Devco as a coal miner; he later relocated to Ontario where he was employed as a jeweler until his retirement. D'Arcy and his wife have resided in Glace Bay for the past five years.
He is survived by his wife, Chris; daughters, Paula, Halifax, Cathy, Vancouver; sisters, Mary Veronica, Ellen Dolphines and Bernadette, all of Ontario, Margie, Newfoundland, Estella, Westmount; brothers, Pat, Glace Bay, James and Leroy, both of Ontario and Bernard, Alberta. D'Arcy is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Valerie and her husband, Joe Wilson and a niece, Amanda. D'Arcy will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will take place today (Saturday) 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Private burial will take place at a later date.

William Douglas Maxwell
56, Baddeck
William Douglas Maxwell, 56, of Baddeck, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at the Victoria County Hospital, Baddeck.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Bill and Chris (Walker) Maxwell.
While working as an RCMP officer he completed his four year undergraduate degree in 18 months. He graduated with distinction and was the recipient of the University of Lethbridge's gold medal for Arts and Sciences. He was also awarded the Lord Beaverbrook Scholarship to the faculty of law at UNB and upon completion of his law degree received the Lieutenant Governor's medal for academic distinction. He was called to the Bar in June of 1973. He established his own successful law firm in Alberta and also practiced in Nova Scotia during his career, which lasted over 20 years. He argued cases before the Supreme Court of Canada and the Old Bailey, London, England. Besides his law career he also served as police commissioner in Lethbridge from 1980 84. Doug was an ardent lover of German shepherds.
He is survived by his wife, the former Joan Nolan; two daughters, Karen Anne, Halifax and Donna Marie, Vancouver.
He was predeceased by his father, Bill, mother, Chris, sister, Ella Barrett and a sister, Karen Campbell in infancy.
The body is resting at MacAskill's Funeral Home, Baddeck with family visitation only. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2000 at St. Michael's Church, Baddeck with the Rev. R.D. Smith officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Cemetery.

Neil Hugh (Scorchy) MacVicar
72, Halifax
Neil Hugh (Scorchy) MacVicar, 72, of Halifax, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Glace Bay on Dec. 4, 1927, he was a son of the late Charles and Edith (Anderson) MacVicar.
After graduation from Morrison High School, Glace Bay, he attended Acadia University, graduating in 1949. He late attended Springfield College, Springfield, Mass., where he received a M.Ed. He taught physical education in Campbellton, N.B., Halifax and Fort Erie, Ont. He and his family spent an exchange teaching year in South Hampton, England in 1957-58. From 1960 63 he taught and coached at Acadia University enjoying great success especially with his 1964-65 volleyball teams. Returning to Halifax in 1965, he taught social studies at Queen Elizabeth High School and later served as vice principal of Cornwallis Junior High until retirement in 1988. In 1972-73, he and his family spent a year's sabbatical in Glasgow, Scotland where he enjoyed researching his family roots.
Varsity sports were a large part of his university life at Acadia where he played hockey and rugby. He was a long time member of the Waegwoltic Club where he began playing tennis. He also coached the Nova Scotia Men's Volleyball team that completed in the 1972 Canada Winter Games, Saskatoon, as well he coached school teams at Queen Elizabeth High School and Cornwallis Junior High.
He was inducted into the Acadia University Sports Hall of Fame both as an athlete and coach. He loved singing and was a member of many church choirs. He was a member of Rockingham United Church.
He is survived by daughters, Joan MacVicar and her husband Rob Tremaine, Martha MacVicar and her husband Danny Beck, all of Halifax, Sarah MacVicar, Hong Kong; son, Donnie MacVicar and his wife Lisa, Toronto; sister, Martha MacVicar, Toronto; three brothers, Charles (Arline), Glace Bay, James (Isabel), Pictou County, Donald (Ann), Bedford; grandchildren, Andrew, Kate, Sarah and Caroline Tremaine, Alexandra, Emily and Sarah Beck, Neil and Priya MacVicar and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by sister, Katherine Austin (1997).
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today (Saturday), 2-4 p.m. Sunday in the J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Rockingham United Church, Flamingo Dr. with the Rev. Allen Darby officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay, at a later date.
