Elsie Mae Johnston
95, Dutch Brook
Elsie Mae Johnston, 95, of Dutch Brook, formerly of Richmond Street, Sydney, passed away Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at the Metwood Guest Home, Dutch Brook.
Born in Birmingham, England, she was the daughter of the late A.E. and Amy Eliza (Squres) Beck. She came to Canada as one of the “Little Immigrants.” She was a life-long resident of Hillside, Mira, who spent her life at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Matheson. Elsie was a member of St. Andrews United Church.
She is survived by two sons Gordon (Margaret), Sydney, and the Rev. Ralph (Henrietta), Hillside, Mira, and six grandchildren Brian (Catherine), Robert (Sandra), Paul (Dr. Shawna), Constable Kenneth (Anita), Elsa (Dr. Keith Donovan) and Peter and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Neil and her brothers Alex, John and Charles.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in St. Andrews Church Wednesday 2 p.m. with Rev. Dale Irving officiating.
Interment in Oakfield Cemetery.
Memorials may be St. Andrews Church or charity of choice.
Rhodena MacBeth
100, Grand River
Rhodena MacBeth, 100, Grand River, died February 11, 2000 at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Grand River, Richmond County, on Oct. 6, 1899, she was a daughter of the late Roderick and Ellen Matheson and step-daughter of the late Donald John Matheson. She lived most of her adult life in New York City, retiring to Grand River approximately thirty years ago.
She is survived by her son, Farquhar, Vista, California; two grandsons, Kenneth and Kevin, both of California, two granddaughters, Kaye Hutchison, Texas, Colleen Hetcel, Wisconsin, six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Frances (Joseph) Litchock, Catherine (Lawson) Urquhart, both of Grand River, Rebecca MacCuspie, Truro, Aileen (Robert) Budd, Parksville, British Columbia; sister-in-law, Mary Matheson, Dartmouth; several nieces, nephews, and caregivers Neil and Jessie Tonet, Framboise.
She was predeceased by her husband, Archibald MacBeth, daughter-in-law, Joanne MacBeth, sisters Margaret Matheson and Mary L. Sasse, and a brother Frank Matheson.
Visitation will be at the Grand River United Church Monday, Feb. 14, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held from Grand River United Church Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m., Pastor Kevin Richardson assisted by Reverend Tony Ware officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Alex Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peters.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charity of choice.
Dr. William MacKay Nicholson
85, Reserve Mines
Dr. Billy of Official Row, Reserve Mines, passed away peacefully at the Glace Bay General Hospital, Cape Breton Healthcare Complex, South St., Glace Bay, on Feb. 13, 2000.
Born Dec. 12, 1914, in Reserve Mines, he was the only son of the late Rev. D.J. and Dolena (MacKay) Nicholson. He was educated in Reserve Mines and Glace Bay later receiving his medical degree from Dalhousie University, Halifax, in 1942. He began to practice medicine in Donkin, C.B. Co., in that same year, receiving $50 per week. In 1945 he moved to Reserve Mines to reopen the practice of his grandfather’s - Senator William MacKay in the old family home on Official Row. He served diligently, with concern and compassion his patients of Donkin, Dominion, Port Morien, Glace Bay and area until after 53 years of practice he retired in July 1995. It was said at his retirement, “his life has been one of responsible caring and dedication to his family, his church and his community. He provided us with a model to live by exemplifying a person of strong character and conviction.”
Dr. Billy served as Chief of Staff at the Glace Bay General from 1970 to 1989 and head of Anaesthetic Departments of both St. Joseph’s and Glace Bay General from 1960 to 1986. He served as president of the Glace Bay Medical Society, and on the executive of the Nova Scotia Medical Society. He was honored with a life time membership by the Canadian Medical Association as well as honorary life member of the Reserve Mines Volunteer Fire Department. He also received recognition by his communities during testimonial dinners held in his honor over the years. He was a strong supporting member of Gordon United Church, Reserve Mines, where his father had served as minister.
Dr. Billy is survived by his sister Margaret Nicholson, Reserve Mines, special nephew Carl Ley, Reserve Mines, nephew David Ervin, Sydney, nieces Linda (Brennan) Sheppard, Gail (Robert) Muir, C.B. Co., grandnephews Alan Ley, Dr. David (Ann) Ley, Andrew and Paul Sheppard, Robert W.G. Muir, grandnieces Margo (Angus) Nicholson, Catherine Muir, great-grandniece Marissa Ley, great-grandnephews Ryan Ley and Matthew Nicholson.
He was predeceased by his sisters Catherine (Keith) Ervin, Annie (Clarence) Beaton, Marion Nicholson, Jean (Ernest) Mink, Aunt Dr. Georgina MacKay, and his very special niece Marion Ley.
Visitation will be held at Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, on Tuesday, Feb. 15, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 16, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A private family service at Gordon United Church on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. followed by a public celebration of life service at St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, at 2:30 p.m. These services will be officiated by Rev. David MacLean and Fr. Ray Huntley. Burial at Gordon United Church Cemetery following the service.

Yvonne Paule Meaney
91, Sydney
Yvonne Paule Meaney, 91, formerly of Grand Lake Road, Sydney, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, in Halifax.
Born in St. Pierre Miquelon, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Vigneau.
She is survived by son Joseph Oursin (wife Dixie), Trenton, Ont.; daughter Lorraine Campbell (husband Gerard), Waverley, N.S.; step-son Roger Meaney; sister Rita McGuigan; brother Joe Vigneau; granddaughters Cheryl and Jolene.
She was predeceased by husband Joe Meaney; step-children George Meaney, Theresa Rogers, Jenny Fraser, Rita McGuigan, her first husband Joseph Oursin and her brother Paul Vigneau.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney.
Mabel Louise Murrant
83, Halifax
Mabel Louise Murrant, 83, of Halifax passed away peacefully at the Fairview Villa on Friday, Feb. 11, 2000.
She was born in New Waterford, daughter of the late Charlotte and Charles Dickson. She lived in Glace Bay until relocating to Halifax with her late husband, Robert in 1958. Mabs was a devoted member of the United Church of Canada. She was a sport and an inspiration to all she came in contact with.
Mabs was predeceased by her daughter Muriel, Oakville, Ont.
She is survived by her sons Fred and Thomas (Tucker) of Halifax; daughter Claudia of Lardoise and son Robert of Chester. Mabs leaves 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister Muriel of New Waterford.
She was predeceased by her brothers Thomas, Glace Bay, Charles, New Waterford; sisters Margaret, South Bar and Hilda, New Waterford and Charlotte, Wayne, New Jersey.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Tuesday 2:30 p.m. with Rev. David MacLean officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Family flowers only, memorials may be made the Canadian Cancer Society.
Emile J. (George) Sautiere
72, Sydney
Emile Joseph (George) Sautiere, 72, of Havelock Street, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in France, he was as son of the late Leon and Daisy (Cassiers) Sautiere. George was retired from Canada Post.
He was a veteran of the Second World War and Korean War. He was also a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Sydney.
George is survived by a sister Daisy (Charles) MacDonald, Munroe, North Carolina, one brother Leon Francois (Genevieve), St. John, N.B.; step-daughter Diane; a special friend Betty Rudderham and a nephew Edward, Halifax.
He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth (Betty) Rose.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday 10 a.m. with the Rev. Ora McManus officiating.
Interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
