Stewart Arbuckle Sr
72, Donkin
Stewart Arbuckle, 72, a resident of Donkin, passed away at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, following a lengthy illness.
Born Jan. 19, 1928, he was the son of the late William Dickie and Nellie (Robertson) Arbuckle.
He was employed with the Dominion Coal Company (No. 24); served 22 years in the Canadian Army with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in Germany, Korea, Egypt and the Belgian Congo as well as many postings across Canada.
He also worked for 14 years with the Cape Breton Development Corp., Railway Division, until his retirement. Stewart was a member of the Royal Canadian Signals Association (Atlantic Division); the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peace-Keeping (Major General Lewis MacKenzie Branch); The Signallers Club of Canada and a Charter Member of the National Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peace-Keeping.
Stewart was a beloved brother and dear friend of brothers, Frederick (Frances), Donkin and Allison, Donkin, sister, Elizabeth, Toronto; sister-in-law, Georgina, Donkin, sister-in-law, Joan, Toronto and sister-in-law, Nellie, Calgary and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Norman, Jock, William, James, George, Robertson and sisters, Janet, Susan, Agnes and Mary.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m. at St. Lukes United Church, Donkin, Rev. James Chisholm officiating. Visitation for the family will be held following the memorial service in the church hall.

John E. Conway
Wallaceberg
Mrs. Joan E. Conway, a long-time resident of Wallaceburg, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at the Chatham-Kent Sydenham Campus, Wallaceburg, at the age of 70 years.
Joan was born in Sydney Mines and was the daughter of the late John Robertson and Georgina Moffat.
Beloved wife of 51 years to Thomas E. Conway. Dear mother to Connie Muir, Australia, John, Wallaceburg, Larry, North Bay and Todd, London. Sadly missed by her grandchildren, Heather, Tara, Kyle, Cassie, Robyn, Karman and Shawn. Survived by three sisters, Marjorie Byers, B.C., Carole White, Newfoundland, Dana Hawley, Alberta and brother, Lonnie Roberton, Manitoba.
Predeceased by her sisters, Eleanor, Mary and Ariel and a brother, John.
Funeral services were conducted at the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Jan. 25 with Fr. John Pirt officiating.
Henry Ernest Wilfred Evans
70, New Waterford
Wilfred Evans, 70, of 10 Sampson’s Lane, New Waterford, passed into the hands of God peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Pleman and Hannah (Brushett) Evans.
He was a member of All Saints Anglican Church as well as a retired coal miner, having worked in No. 12 and Lingan collieries.
Wilfred is survived by two daughters, Linda (Mrs. Jim Thorkildsen), Mississauga, Ont., Cheryl (Mrs. Greg Aligianis), Etobicoke, Ont.; two sons, Ross, Ottawa, Ont. and David; four grandchildren; a nephew, Wilson Murphy, Parker’s Cove, Nfld.
He was predeceased by the mother of his children, three sisters, Hilda Jane Miller, Eliza Jane Evans, Myrtle Brushett.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. in All Saints Church with the Rev. Douglas Chard officiating. Burial in Union Grove Cemetery.
Elsie Mae Johnston
95, Sydney
Elsie Mae Johnston, 95, formerly of 76 Richmond St., Sydney, passed away Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at the Metwood Guest Home, Dutch Brook.
Born in Birmingham, England, she was the daughter of the late A.E. and Amy Eliza (Squres) Beck.
Elsie came to Canada as one of the “Little Immigrants” and was a life-long resident of Sydney, who spent her early youth at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Matheson, Hillside, Mira. She was a member of St. Andrews United Church.
Elsie is survived by two sons, Gordon (Margaret), Sydney, and their two children, Brian Q.C. (Catherine), Halifax and Robert (Sandra), Saint John, N.B., and Rev. Ralph (Henrietta), Hillside, Mira, and their four children, Paul (Dr. Shawna), Kingston, Ont., Const. Kenneth (Anita), Armstrong, B.C., Elsa (Dr. Keith) Donovan, London, Ont. and Peter, Halifax and also 13 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Neil and her brothers, Alex, John, and Charles.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with a funeral service in St. Andrews Church, Wednesday 2 p.m. with Rev. Dale Irving officiating. Interment in Oakfield Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to St. Andrews Church or a charity of choice.
Helen MacIntosh
89, Port Morien
Helen MacIntosh, 89, of Long Beach Road, Port Morien, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at her residence.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Murdock and Catherine MacDonald.
Helen was a 1933 graduate of Sydney City Hospital, she was an adherent of St. John’s United Church, Port Morien.
Helen is survived by daughter, Joyce and son-in-law George Holden, Port Caledonia; son, John and daughter-in-law Edith, Long Beach; grandchildren, Marilyn (Allister) Edwards, Port Caledonia, Stephen MacIntosh, Long Beach, David (Wendy) MacIntosh, Long Beach; four great-grandchildren, Sean and Stephen Edwards, Scott and Jenna MacIntosh.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alex in 1992, sisters, Catherine Fawcett, Jean Carlon, and Willetta MacGrath.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, with Jim Chisholm officiating. Interment will be in Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Church or to a charity of choice.
George Archibald MacLellan
92, Halifax
George Archibald MacLellan, 92, passed away peacefully in the Northwood Home, Halifax, Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000.
Born June 18, 1907, he was a son of the late Archibald B. and Flora (MacDonald) MacLellan.
He was a veteran of the Second World War RCN, Field Engineer for Superline Oil, owner/operator MacLellan Construction Co. Ltd. and a member of the Cape Breton Club.
Survived by his wife, Peggy (Strachan); son, David (Judi), Bedford; daughters, Dianne (Richard) Sandelli, Port Colborne, Ont.; Elaine Bourgeois, Halifax; son, Robert, Halifax; grandchildren, Angela (John) Belcastro, Iain, Robert, David, Sandelli, Ontario, Catie Bourgeois, Halifax; sisters, Christine Scribbner, Medfield, Mass., Alice MacDonald, Sydney; brother, Donald (Sally), Aldershot, England; sister-in-law, Jessie MacLellan, River Denys.
He was predeceased by his brother, John, sisters, Jessie MacKinnon, Nellie Livingstone.
No visitation by his request. Cremation has taken place. Private family service. Graveside service to be held at a later date in Cape Breton.
