Gordon C. Buchanan
90, Chicopee Falls, Mass.
Gordon Charles Buchanan, 90, of Chicopee Falls, Mass., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Charles and Min (Buffet) Buchanan.
He was a veteran of the Second World War. Gordon was a longtime employee of Monsanto Chemical Co. in the Indian Orchard section of Springfield and retired in 1974.
He leaves his wife, Anne; three sons, Charles D., Garden Grove, Calif., Danny J., Downey, Calif. and William L., Springfield, Mass. Also one daughter, Theresa M. Kelley, North Hampton, N.H.; a sister, Lorraine McCormick, North Sydney; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sons, Peter and Thomas, one brother, Clayton and two sisters, Sheila Reid and Eileen MacKay.
The funeral took place in Chicopee Falls, Monday, Feb. 14, 2000.
Emily Blanche and Olivia Jane Cuzner
North Sydney
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the deaths of Emily Blanche and Olivia Jane, newborn twin daughters of David and Tanya (Jackson) Cuzner, North Sydney, who passed away Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Besides their parents, Emily and Olivia are survived by paternal grandparents, David and Doreen Cuzner, Sydney Mines; maternal grandparents, Harris and Linda Jackson, North Sydney; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends whose hearts and lives have been touched by their short lives.
Friends and family are invited to gather at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney, Friday, Feb. 18, 2000 at 11 a.m. A private committal service will be held in the spring at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney, where the girls will be interred with maternal great-grandparents, William and Effie Blanche Freeborne.
How very softly you tiptoed into our world, almost silently, only a moment you stayed but what an imprint our tiny angels have left upon our hearts. We love you both, even though you could not stay.
Brandon Ronald Gregg Gibson
53, Glace Bay
Brandon Ronald Gregg Gibson, 53, of 155 Cottage St., Glace Bay, died peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Thessialon, Ont., he was the son of Cecily Rosanna (King) and the late Lawrence Gibson.
Ronald belonged to St. Anne’s Church. He served as a cook for 22 years with the Royal Canadian Air Force and was an active member with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 3, serving on the Color Party. He was on the advisory council for St. Michael’s Junior High and was a member of the breakfast program committee. He was also a chairperson with the sponsoring committee for the No. 45 Royal Canadian Air Cadets. He enjoyed darts and was a member of the Friday Night Dart League, North Street, Glace Bay.
Ronald is survived by his wife, the former Mary (Gibson) Gibson; two sons, Terry and Tommy, both of Bay Roberts, Nfld.; three daughters, Tammy (Derrick Taylor), Port Lorne, N.S., Angela and Amanda, both at home; two brothers, James, Kingston Conception Bay, Nfld. and Thomas, Bay Roberts, Nfld. and one sister, Barbara Hogan, Northern Bay, Nfld. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Shania and Theoren.
Besides his father, Ronald was predeceased by one brother, Lawrence and a sister, Margaret Linda.
There will be no visitation. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Doug Murphy officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay.
Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation are suggested as memorials.
Margaret Patricia (Syms) Henderson
Springhill, N.S.
Margaret Patricia (Syms) Henderson, 42 Mechanic St., Springhill, N.S., passed away on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Amherst Hospital, Springhill, N.S.
Born in New Waterford on April 16, 1941, she was the daughter of the late William Syms and Mary Ann (Boutilier) Syms.
She is survived by her husband, John Henderson; sons, Richard and Robert, daughter, Margaret (Peggy) and five grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Priscilla (Richard) McPhee, Sydney, Ann Marie Syms, Mira, Mary Jane Syms, New Waterford, Madonna Syms, New Waterford and Sharon Ann Syms, New Victoria and a brother, Anthony, New Waterford.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Mary and Theresa and brothers, Gussie, Georgie, John and Billy.
Funeral service took place Feb. 14 at the A-H Brown Funeral Home, Springhill, with Rev. F. Likely officiating. Burial took place at Rodney Cemetery.
Francis (Frank) Jenkins
East Bay
The family of the late Francis (Frank) Jenkins of Prince Edward Island, formerly of East Bay, will be receiving friends Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Northside East Bay Fire Hall from 2-4 p.m.
Eugenie Marie Matheson
91, North Sydney
Eugenie Marie Matheson, 91, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at the home of her cousin, Carmella Matheson Gillis and her husband Barry, North Sydney, where she resided for the past six years.
Born in Florence, she was the daughter of Marie Loretta Matheson. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She received her early education in Florence and later graduated from the Nova Scotia Teachers College, Truro. She also attended several summer schools at Mount St. Vincent University, Halifax.
She taught school in MacIntyre Lake, Alder Point, Mill Creek and for many years in Florence. At one time she served as organist and choir director in St. Stephen’s Parish, Florence. Many of her students took part in the Sydney Kiwanis Festival.
She was a charter member of the Cape Breton County local of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
After retirement she conducted a pre-school in her home for several years. She enjoyed being a volunteer at the Kinsmen Day Care Centre, teaching music to pre-schoolers.
When St. Stephen’s Parish started, she donated the property for the glebe house and cemetery.
Miss Matheson was a member of the negotiating committee that initiated the St. Francis Xavier summer schools in Sydney which preceded the establishment of Xavier College and UCCB. She was a lover of children and reached out to many in time of need.
At her request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held Saturday Feb. 19, 2000, at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Joe Gillis officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
Susan Martin
Glace Bay
Susan (Hatcher) Martin passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Rose Blanche, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Rubin and Mary (Burt) Hatcher.
Susan is survived by one daughter, Joan (Gerald) McKinlay, Glace Bay; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; also survived by one brother, Philip Chislett, Glace Bay.
Susan was predeceased by her husband, Freeman in 1980, two brothers, Thomas and Montford and three sisters, Annie, Naomi and Mary.
There will be no visitation by her request. Cremation has taken place. A private family committal service to be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay with Canon Fev Arnold officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
