Henry Gus Roach
75, New Waterford
Henry Gus Roach, 75, 3788 Sutherland Ave., New Waterford, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Joseph and Henrietta (Comhaire) Roach.
Henry was a member of Mount Carmel parish and a retired coal miner, having worked in No. 12 and Lingan collieries.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary Sullivan, Massachusetts, U.S.A., Ellen, Manus, Ind., Charlene (Mrs. Francis Cameron), Sydney, Charlotte (Mrs. Wayne Brushett), with whom he resided; four sons, Henry Jr., Massachusetts, U.S.A., Joseph (Patricia), Charles and David (Cheryl), all of Sydney; a brother, Joseph (Pat), London, Ont.; two sisters, Regina Roberts, London, Ont.; Mary Stagg, California. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary MacKinnon, one grandson, one great-granddaughter.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Saturday 10 a.m. Mount Carmel Church, Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Any donations in Henry’s memory may be made to the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital or charity of choice.
Duncan Francis Totten
80, New Glasgow
Duncan Francis (Frank) Totten, 80, of New Glasgow and formerly of Port Hood, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, in the Aberdeen Regional Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Port Hood, Inverness County, he was a son of the late Henry and Mary Jane (Ross) Totten.
He worked in Oshawa, Ont. for many years and was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a member of the United Church of Canada.
Survived by a sister, Catherine MacNeil, Sydney; brother, Edward, Port Hawkesbury.
He was predeceased by sisters, Hughena Totten, Agnes Totten, Sadie MacDonald and Mary Coe and brothers, George and Henry.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Port Hood Community Funeral Home. Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday in St. Stephen’s United Church, Port Hood with the Rev. Don Wilmer officiating. Burial in the Union Protestant Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Simon Alexander Martin
69, Glace Bay
Simon A. Martin, 69, of 12 MacKeigan St., Glace Bay, and formerly of Woodstock, Ont., died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late George and Sarah (Barrett) Martin.
Simon is survived by his loving wife Phyllis Miles (Foster); sons Roy (Beverley), Woodstock, Ont., Fred (Muriel), Brampton, Ont., Thomas (Colleen), Brampton, Ont., Keith (Vicki), Calgary, Alberta, Thomas Foster, Woodstock, Ont., Edmund Foster, London, Ont., Paul Foster, Ingersoll, Ont., Russell Foster, Stratford, Ont.; daughters Judy (Ken) Roberts, Woodstock, Ont., Gail (Gary) Duncan, Woodstock, Ont., Allison (Lyle) Crigg, London, Ont., Sandra Duncan, Kitchener, Ont. Also surviving are sisters Marjorie (Horace) Owen, Toronto, Ont., Joan Wadden, Toronto, Ont., Elizabeth (Roberts) Jackson, St. Thomas, Ont.; brother George (Colleen) Martin, Glace Bay. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his first wife Marjorie Chant, sister Clare, brothers, Thomas, Edward, Jack, James and Frank.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the Salvation Army Citadel, Glace Bay, with Major Denzel Baggs officiating. Interment will be in Woodstock, Ont., at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
Arrangements are entrusted to Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
William T. Curtis
Ingonish Beach
William Thomas Curtis, 83, of Ingonish Beach, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital in Neils Harbour.
Born in Ingonish, he was the son of the late Jerry and Bridget Williams-Curtis. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Ingonish Beach and he was a retired construction worker.
Predeceased by four brothers Jerry, Vincent, Henry and a step-brother Anthony and one sister Mary Anne.
There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, in St. Peters Church, Ingonish Beach, with Fr. John Morrison officiating.
Donations may be made to the Buchanan Memorial Hospital in Neils Harbour.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish.
Brandon Ronald Gregg Gibson
53, Glace Bay
Brandon Ronald Gregg Gibson, 53, of Glace Bay, who died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, is survived by two sons, Terry and Tommy, both of Port Lorne, N.S.
Besides his father and one brother, he was also predeceased by two sisters, Margaret and Linda.
There will be no visitation. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated today (Friday), 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Doug Murphy officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay.
Francis (Frank) Jenkins
East Bay
The family of the late Francis (Frank) Jenkins of Prince Edward Island, formerly of East Bay, will be receiving friends on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Northside East Bay Fire Hall from 2-4 p.m.
Freeman Pittman
75, Glace Bay
Freeman Francis Pittman, 75, of 28 Cooling St., Glace Bay, died at his residence, Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Daniel and Veronica (MacNeil) Pittman. He had been employed with the Dominion Coal Company as a coal miner for 13 years. He was a veteran of the Second World War and the Korean Conflict. He lived in Hamilton for over 25 years and while there was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He returned to Glace Bay a year ago.
He is survived by two sons, Pat (Philomena), St. Alban, Nfld. and John, Hamilton and their mother, Muriel, also in Hamilton; six grandchildren, Sheri, Colin, Theresa, Sean, Dana and Cameron; one great-grandchild, Patrick.
He was predeceased by two children, Theresa and Billy; four brothers, William, Gordon, John and Gregory; five sisters, Irene, Mildred, Margaret, Mary and Dorothy.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Monday in St. John’s Church. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
