William (Buster) Beaton
62, Sydney Mines
William (Buster) Beaton, 62, of Fraser Ave., Sydney Mines, died at home.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Mary Beaton. He was employed for many years with National Sea Products in North Sydney. He was an avid pool player and bowler.
He is survived by one aunt, Eva Beaton of North Sydney.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date. Arrangements under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
John Joseph Deveaux
79, Sydney
John Joseph Deveaux, 79, of Spruce Street, Sydney, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Cheticamp, he was a son of the late Joseph and Marie (Poirier) Deveaux. He was a member of St. Theresa Parish, Sydney. He was employed as an auto mechanic until his retirement in 1974. A veteran of the Second World War and a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 138, Ashby.
John Joseph is survived by his wife, the former Marie Denise Aucoin; three sons, Joseph, at home, Gordon (Janice), Stoney Creek, and David, Stoney Creek; two daughters, Marlene (David) Colburne, Sydney, Donna (Rick) MacLeod, Windsor, N.S.; five grandchildren Adam, Whitney, Amanda, Felicia and Brandon. Also surviving are four sisters, Marie Cecile (Henry) Poirier, Margaret (Placide) Maillet, Rhea Poirier, all of Petite Etang, and Eva (Richard) Chiasson, Montreal; three brothers Amedee, Cheticamp, Henri and Yvon of Montreal and several nieces and nephews.
John Joseph was predeceased by two brothers Freddie and Pierre; two sisters infancy.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m., with funeral mass in St. Theresa Church Tuesday 11 a.m. with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating.
Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
A. Florence Dunlop
75, Glace Bay
Annie Florence Dunlop, 75, of 32 David St., Glace Bay, died Feb. 19, 2000, at the Glace Bay General Hospital with family by her side.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Lolie (MacKay) Anderson. She was a member of Saint Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay. Florence loved playing cards and watching soap operas.
Mrs. Dunlop is survived by her two daughters Doretta (Mrs. Roy Moore) and Barbara (Mrs. Ronald Royal), Glace Bay; six sons, Brian and Blair, Glace Bay, Dannie, Howie Center, Wayne, London, Ont., Johnnie, Dartmouth and Calvin, Reserve Mines. Also surviving is one brother Mr. Clifford Anderson, Glace Bay; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her loving husband John; two brothers Robert and Albert; two sisters Vivian and Isabel and a loving daughter Florence.
Visitation will take place on Monday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Florence, donations may be made to the Diabetic Association of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.
James Angus Gillis
Victoria Bridge
James Angus Gillis, 79, of Victoria Bridge, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a short illness.
Born at Grand Mira, he was the son of the late Stephen and Rose (Gillis) Gillis. James’s working years were spent in Toronto, where he was employed with Dunlap Tire Ltd., later working for the Dominion Stores. He retired to Cape Breton in 1985.
Surviving are his sister Isabel (Jimmy) Gillis, Sydney, and two brothers Michael (Mary) Gillis and Bernard (Anne) Gillis, both of Sydney.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Duncan, Lawrence and Stephen.
In honour of the late Mr. Gillis’s wishes there will be no visitation or church service. Cremation has taken place. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney.
Alfred Joseph LeBlanc
74, New Victoria
Alfred Joseph (Alfie) LeBlanc, 74, of New Victoria, a lifelong resident of New Victoria, passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Alfie was the son of the late Gustave and Blanche (MacGillivray) LeBlanc. He was a retired miner, having worked in Number 18, 20, 26, 12 and Lingan collieries.
A loving and devoted father, he leaves to mourn his five children, Linda, Susan, Elizabeth, Johnny and Alfie Jr. who cared for his father these past several years. Alfie is also survived by his five grandchildren whom he loved dearly; Stephen and David Catoul, Kathleen, Michael and Patrick Moran. His sons-in-law Sam Moran and John Catoul will dearly miss their old friend. Also surviving are his brother Amadee, sister Christina Durrah, brother-in-law Rannie MacVarish and sisters-in-law Sadie MacVarish and Kaye MacMullin.
Besides his parents, Alfie was predeceased by his wife Agnes (MacVarish), a son Donald in infancy and sisters Ina, Doris and Ebie.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Father Everett MacDow at Saint Joseph’s Church, New Victoria on Tuesday Feb. 22, 2000, at 10 a.m. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.
Memorials to the Canadian Diabetic Association would be appreciated.

Dan Alex MacLeod
95, Stirling
Dan Alex MacLeod, 95, of Stirling passed away Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Stirling, he was a son of the late Dan and Catherine (Patterson) MacLeod. Dan Alex was a retired sheep farmer and well-known lumberman, owner/operator of a sawmill in Stirling for many years. He was past president of the Sheep Producers Association.
He was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, an elder for 48 years. A member of Heather Lodge #124, he received his 50-year Jewel, and was also a member of the Sons of Temperance.
Dan Alex is survived by his wife the former Margaret (MacQueen) MacLeod; one daughter Rhodena (Charlie Angus) MacLeod, Stirling; four sons, Angus Archie (Lily) Framboise Intervale, Dan Alex Jr. (Dannie), Dan Norman, both of Stirling, and Karron Angus (Fay), Howie Center; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is half-sister Margaret Rudderham, Edwardsville.
Dan Alex was predeceased by his first wife Catherine Kristine MacLeod in 1975 and a sister in infancy.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with visitation Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Framboise, with funeral service in the church Wednesday 2 p.m. with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment in St. Andrews Cemetery, Framboise. A Masonic service will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday at 7 p.m.
