James Wilson MacNeil
55, Sydney
James Wilson MacNeil, 55, of Lilac Terrace, Sydney, passed away, after a long battle with cancer, Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his family.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Peter and Minnie (Musgrave) MacNeil. He worked at Havelock Home Bottling Co. for many years and as a taxi driver for Briands and Kings Cabs Co. He was an honourary life-member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, where he donated much of his time with the sports leagues doing voluntary work especially the mixed dart league of which he was president for many years. Jim also enjoyed a good game of tarabish and watching hockey.
He is survived by two daughters Catherine Rose (Jimmy) Timmons, Grand Mira North, Kimberly (Jimmy) Mosher, Dartmouth; son Jamie, B.C., and five grandchildren, Eric, Ryan and Melissa Timmons; Khristopher and Samantha Mosher. Also surviving are five sisters, Cathy (Blair) Langlois; Donna (Laurence) Muller and Rita Weatherbee, all of Sydney, Sylvia (Steven) Eddy, Elmsdale, and Rhoda Doiron, Timberlea; a brother Peter (Barb), Dutch Brook. Also surviving his former wife Shirley (Brown) MacNeil and friend John.
James was predeceased by a brother in infancy.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Tuesday, 2 p.m., with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Oncology Dept. or Palliative Care of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Mary (K) Moulton
70, North Sydney
Mary (K) Katherine Moulton, 70, a resident of the Extended Care Northside General Hospital and formerly of Purves Street, North Sydney, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney she was a daughter of the late Gordon and Eva (Fogarty) Gouthro. She worked for many years as a Registered Nurse at Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines prior to her retirement. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney.
Surviving are son Bert (Moira Anne) Moulton, Tantallon, N.S.; two grandchildren Aimee, Tantallon, and Jennifer (Mrs. Paul Bonnar), Greenwood, N.S.; two sisters Louise Marshall, Halifax, and Joan Carter, Montreal, and four brothers Russell Gouthro, Florence, N.S., Terry Gouthro, Vancouver, B.C., Jimmy Gouthro, Ontario, and George Gouthro, Ottawa.
She was predeceased by her husband Bert Moulton and a brother Jack Gouthro.
A private family visitation will be held. Funeral Mass 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.

Katherine Jane (MacLean) Pollett
Sydney
Katherine Jane Pollett of Royal Ave., Sydney, died suddenly on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at home.
Born at Marble Mountain, she was a graduate of the Sydney City Hospital and was very active in the alumni association for many years. She was a member of First United Church where she served as an elder and was a past president of the UCW. She was an active member and former president of the ladies’ division of the Lingan Golf and Country Club.
She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband Gordon; daughter Jane Tufford (James), Calgary; son William (Carol Greene), St. John’s, and a grandson Brent Tufford.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Rev. Neil MacLean and Duncan MacLean and two sisters, Alice MacFarlane and Chris Debison.
The late Mrs. Pollett will have visitation today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First United Church with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the charity of choice.
Frederick Cyril Rideout
67, Sydney Mines
Mr. Frederick Cyril Rideout, 67, of 244 Main St., Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Bond and Myrtle (Snow) Rideout. He was a member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines. In his younger years he worked at the Sydney Steel Plant before going to Ontario and making his home in Bramalea, where he was employed until his retirement with Motor Express Inc. He returned to Sydney Mines and erected a new home on the family property on Main St. He enjoyed his retirement years fishing, bowling and woodworking.
He is survived by twin daughters, Beverly (Mrs. Terry Laffin), and Brenda (Mrs. Alfred Mills), both of Sydney Mines; sons Dennis (Sharon), Brampton, Ont., Leslie (Tammy), Toronto, Terry (Linda), Alberta, Fred Jr. (Theresa) and Rick (Susan), both of North Sydney; brothers Clarence (Ruth) and Donald (Delores), both of Sydney Mines; sisters Florence (Mrs. Ellsworth McLellan) and Loretta (Mrs. John MacKinnon), both of Sydney Mines, Bernice Rideout, Brooklyn, N.S., and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother Val and a sister Margaret Ford.
By family request, there will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Society or a charity of one’s choice.
Judy Stewart, R.N.
42, North Sydney
Judy Anne Stewart, 42, a resident of Pleasant Street, North Sydney, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Vivian (Nader) Rahey. Judy was employed as a Registered Nurse at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Neo-Natal Unit. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and of the Parish Pastoral Council. She was an active member of St. Mary’s School Advisory Council and was President of the Nova Scotia Lung Association, Cape Breton Chapter.
Surviving are her husband Lloyd Stewart, son, Steven, daughter, Raylene, sister, Beverly (Mrs. Bruce Haggett), Sydney, two brothers, Richard Rahey, Boularderie, and Brad (Joanne) Rahey, Bras d’Or, two nephews Joshua and Cole, two nieces Chloe and Lindsey and also a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents and one sister Debbie.
Visitation 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral mass 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association.
Patrice Wilbert Aucoin
73, Cheticamp Island
Patrice Wilbert AuCoin, 73, of Cheticamp Island, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Toronto.
Born in Cheticamp, he was the son of the late Dougald John AuCoin and Nellie (nee Arsenault) AuCoin. He was a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Cheticamp. He received his formal education at NDA Cheticamp, College Ste. Anne, Church Point, N.S. and the Université De Moncton. He served in the R.C.N.V.R. as a bandsman at HMCS Donna Cona, Montreal from 1947-48. He joined the RCMP in Halifax in December 1948, the first young man from Cheticamp to do so. His first assignment was Montreal and thereafter he served in Nova Scotia, Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Parliament Hill, Ottawa and in various areas of New Brunswick. He retired from the RCMP in Fredericton in 1971 with 23 years service. From 1971 to 1980 he was with Immigration Canada in Fredericton as an Intelligence Officer. From 1980-85, he was chief of police in the town of Dieppe, N.B. From there he retired to Cheticamp where he and his late wife Ruth together, operated the Icelandic Horse Riding Tours on Cheticamp Island for five years. During his career he was Charter President of the Shediac Lions Club, President of the Shediac branch of the Mentally Retarded Association, President of N.B. Division of the RCMP Veterans’ Association, Director on the Board of the Atlantic Police Academy at Holland College in Charlottetown, PEI. He was also a member of the Cheticamp Development Commission and board member for the Sacred Heart Hospital. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 32, Cheticamp and a life-member of the Canadian Chiefs of Police.
He is survived by two sons, Patrick, Vancouver and John, Moncton, N.B.; three daughters, Sandra (Mrs. Patrick Dennis), Amman, Jordan, Gail Morris and Gisele AuCoin, Toronto; a sister Mabel Roy, Montreal and four grandchildren Annaise AuCoin, Alexander AuCoin, Joanne AuCoin and Lydia Dennis.
He was predeceased by his wife the former Ruth Evelyn Tecklenburg; brothers, Freddie, Chester, Alex and Alfred and a sister Marie Helene AuCoin.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Cheticamp Funeral Home. A memorial mass will be offered on Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church, Cheticamp. Burial will be in Margaree Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.
