Ann Gardener Bain
54, Baddeck
Ann Gardener Bain, 54, of Baddeck, Vict. Co., died Feb. 19, 2000 at home.
Born in England, she was the daughter of Christabelle (Jolly) and Charlie Nicholson. She was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Baddeck. She was a past member of Greenwood United Church Choir and a member of Knox Presbyterian Church Choir and Eastern Star. She was a graduate of Baddeck Academy. She was employed at Stones Drug Store for 20 years and the Silver Dart Motel for five years. She was currently owner and operator with her husband of Bain’s Heritage House.
She is survived by her husband Roderick Grant Bain; son, Andrew of Sydney; two brothers Charles Graham, at home and Michael MacKay and his wife Patsy, Lower Sackville, nephew Christopher Michael, Lower Sackville.
By family request, there will be no visitation. A private family service will be held at MacAskill Funeral Home with the Rev. Lloyd Murdock and the Rev. David Lutes officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Family flowers only by request.
Donations may be made to Shriners Memorial Crippled and Burned Children’s Travel Fund or Knox Presbyterian Church, Baddeck.
Harold Clayton Penney
54, Sydney
Harold Clayton Penney, 54, passed away on February 13, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Born in Florence, Cape Breton, Harold moved to New Waterford where he was raised. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a young man and served for 25 years before returning to Sydney.
Harold is survived by his loving children, Michelle and William Penney; aunts, Leah, Molly, and Linda; uncles, Hayward, Wilson, and Will; cousins, Marilyn, Brendan, and Ada; and many family members and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth May Penney and William Harold Penney.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A service will be held at a later date in Newfoundland.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
Marguerite Marie Martin
83, Sydney Mines
Marguerite Marie Martin, 83, a life-long resident of Sydney Mines, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on February 20, 2000.
Marguerite was the daughter of the late Marie Hynes and John Herve. She nursed for several years at the Northside General Hospital. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society and did volunteer work at the Northside Community Guest Home.
She is survived by her daughters Norma (Mrs. George Power), Riverview, N.B., Janet (Mrs. Ken Johnston), Pictou, N.S. and Judith (Mrs. Murray Nicholson), Truro, N.S., her son Paul (Frances MacNeil), Mississauga Ont., her sister Rev. Sister Margaret Mary Herve, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces.
She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Hugh J. Martin, her sons Herve and John, her sisters Adele, Freda, Regina, Lydia and her brothers Alexis and Joseph.
At her request there will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Adele Elizabeth Ronayne
80, Sydney Mines
Adele Elizabeth Ronayne, 80, a resident of 29 Shore Rd., Sydney Mines, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the former Adele Nolely, daughter of the late Peter and Annie Nolely. She was employed for a number of years with C.N. Marine, North Sydney. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney. Adele enjoyed playing cards and was a member of a ladies club for over 30 years, she also enjoyed singing and dancing. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 19.
She is survived by two sons, David (Elizabeth), Bras d’Or and Bill, Sydney Mines; one daughter, Joanne at home; 11 grandchildren, Brent, Mary Beth, Billy Joe, John, Monique, David, Laurie, Heather, Chrissy, Joey and Tracey; four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Kelsey, Brianna and Joe Jr. Also a number of brothers and sisters residing across Canada.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Ronayne; a daughter, Sharon and a son, Joey.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass, 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with the Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.
William Joseph (Buster) Beaton
62, Sydney Mines
William Joseph (Buster) Beaton, 62, of 47 Fraser Ave., Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully at home.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Mary Beaton.
He was employed for many years with National Sea Products in North Sydney. He was an avid pool player and bowler and he greatly enjoyed the company of his friends on the CB radio.
He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by one aunt, Eva Beaton, North Sydney and by two very special people, Jolene Jackson and her daughter, Megan Ashley, who were a huge part of his life for many years, whom he considered his family and loved dearly.
He was a well known member of the community and will be sadly missed by many.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by one uncle, William Beaton.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 6, 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Church with Fr. Anthony MacDonald officiating.

Connie Fogarty
49, Sydney River
Constance Bridget (Connie) Fogarty, 49, of 50 Carmichael Dr., Sydney River, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, after a short illness.
Born in New Waterford, Connie was the daughter of the late Ambrose Bernard and Mary Catherine (MacLean) Currie.
Connie received her undergraduate degree at Mt. St. Vincent University, Halifax and later received her graduate degree in special education, also in Halifax. Since graduating, Connie taught at various schools in the Cape Breton Regional School Board and was teaching at Mountainview School, Howie Centre at the time of her illness.
Connie was active in many church organizations including RCIA, Cursillo and Challenge Movements and was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River.
Besides her loving husband, Richard and son, David Joseph, Connie is survived by sisters, Maryena (Don) Darby, Saint John, N.B., Colleen (Al) Newman, London, Ont. and Catherine MacLean, Sydney. She is also survived by brothers, Bernard, Saint John, N.B., James (Marsha), Halifax and Lawrence (Susan), New Glasgow, N.S. and by many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Connie was predeceased by her brothers, Byron and David.
Many who came in contact with Connie were profoundly touched by her unpretentious love, faith, kindness, generosity, non-judgementalness and non-critical nature.
She will be deeply missed by many in addition to family, particularly her two special friends, Mary Alice MacInnis and Sharon Barry, both of Sydney; niece, Tanya Pettinger, Saint John, N.B. and nephew, Peter Joseph Maguire, Sydney.
The late Mrs. Fogarty will rest at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, George Street, with visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24. Funeral mass will be held Friday, 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River with the Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Palliative Care.
