Lexina A. Keigan
82,, Sydney
Lexina A. Keigan, 82, Breton Bay Nursing Home, passed away on Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at the home.
Born in Woodbine, she was the daughter of the late Archie and Christine (MacLean) MacKinnon.
She was a member of St. Andrews United Church and the Ladies Guild. Lexina was retired from the Dietary Department of St. Rita’s Hospital and Braemore Home. She was the last member of her immediate family.
Lexina is survived by her five daughters, Evelyn (Harvey) Timmons, Big Bras d’Or, Norma (Harold) Delaney, Marion Bridge, Patsy (Ambrose) Lewis, Frenchvale, Elaine (Donald) MacLeod, Framboise, and Fay (Karron) MacLeod, Howie Centre; one son, Greg (Wendy), Westmount; four half-sisters, Florence MacNeil, Archina MacKeigan, Frances MacKeigan and Jean Burchell; 16 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norman, a granddaughter, Cheryl, and five brothers, Alexander, Arthur, Dougal, Charlie and Steve.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Andrews United Church Friday, 11 a.m. with Rev. Dale Irving and Sharon lrving officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society or a charity of choice.
Holly Leet
64, Mira
Holly Leet, 64, of Mira, formerly of Mississauga, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Iron Bound Cove, N.B., he was the last surviving member of his immediate family, being predeceased by his parents, Harry and Beatrice Leet, sister, Shirley Bryan and an infant brother, David.
Left to mourn his loss are his loving wife, Joann (nee Smith), Ireland; daughter, Kim (Glenn) Esau and their three children, Amber, Sean and A.J., niece, “my second daughter” Colleen Rosenmeyer and her five boys, Aunt Jessie Judson, all of Mississauga; sister-in-law, Helen Smith, Brampton; father-in-law, Sid (Anne) Smith, Glace Bay and his beloved pet, Midnight.
Holly was a tool and die maker by trade, working at Continental Can, Toronto for 29 years and from where he retired in 1991. He was an avid member of the Steelworker’s Union, Local 4025 and was shop steward for 11 years for all trades – a position of which he was very proud.
Holly was a superb five-pin bowler, belonging to the Master Bowlers Association of Ontario. He was a member of Hellewells’ All-Stars and the Toronto Mens’ Majors for years. In 1992, he was inducted into the Five-Pin Bowlers Hall of Fame. In 1999, he was named 12th on the list of the best bowlers in Ontario over the last 100 years. He was named a member of the Bowlers Dream Team for the years 1945-1975. He also played Triple “A” Fastball (catcher) and senior hockey. He loved gardening and ice fishing in Cape Breton.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Friday, March 3 at 5 p.m. followed by a memorial service in the chapel at 6 p.m.

John Bernard MacNeil
61, Sydney
John Bernard MacNeil, 61, of 59 Glenda Cres., Sydney, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at the QEII Health Centre, Halifax.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Donald John and Margaret (MacNeil) MacNeil, Glace Bay.
He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney and the KOC. He was a member of the N.S. Association of Social Workers and presently served on the Board of the Howard House and was presently chairperson of the Sydney Parkinson’s Society. Bernie was a past member of the Board of the Kin Centre and was a past board member of Family Services. Bernie was a child protection worker with the Children’s Aid Society of Halifax, then worked for Community Services with the City of Dartmouth and then for the City of Halifax as a supervisor in the Gottingen Street Welfare Office. Since 1971 Bernie worked as a parole officer in Sydney with Correctional Services of Canada.
Surviving are his wife, the former Judith Simms; daughter, Heather at home; two sons, Kevin (Patricia), Halifax and Andrew (Dotti), Calgary; three sisters, Leone Trainor, Courtice, Ont., Eunice Coté (Danny), Glace Bay and Jean Buckland (Lou), Sydney; one brother, Eric, Port Morien.
He was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Colleen and by his mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff and Elizabeth Simms.
The late Mr. MacNeil will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on the 2nd level today (Wednesday) 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Anthony Daniel Church with the Rev. Leo Boone officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Society, the Parkinson’s Society or to a charity of choice.
Mary Jane Matergio

Mary Jane Matergio passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, in Truro, N.S.
She was the daughter of the late Sarah and Tom White, Grand Lake.
She is survived by one son, Bob (Judy) and a grandson, Andrew; also by four sisters, Olive, Peggy, Grace and Colleen and by three brothers, Arnold, Tom and Walter.
Predeceased by her husband, Peter, son, Wayne and also by a brother, Joseph.
Elizabeth Hazel (Martell) Peach
87, Glace Bay
Elizabeth (Beth) Hazel (Martell) Peach, 87, of the Cove Guest Home, Sydney and formerly of 9 Cottage St., Glace Bay, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Emeline Martell.
Elizabeth was a member of United Baptist Church, Glace Bay and she was also a member of the choir. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Elizabeth is survived by daughter, Elizabeth (Henry MacDonald), Sydney; sons, Delano (Florence) Peach and Gerald (May) Peach, both of Sydney; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband, Edgar Peach, one sister and six brothers.
Visitation will take place Thursday, Feb. 24 from 1-2 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, where funeral will be held at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jennifer Smart officiating. Committal service will be held in the chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Cove Guest Home or to a charity of choice.
Donald John Bernard
39, Waycobah
Donald John Bernard passed away on Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, in Waycobah.
Born in Baddeck, he was the son of the late Jacob and Bertha (Goo Goo) Bernard. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish, Waycobah.
He is survived by his wife, the former Sandra Ann Goo Goo; daughters, Alichia, Cecelia, and Sondra, all at home; sons, Desmond and Diamond, both at home; sisters, Mary (Mrs. Joe Johnson), Eskasoni, Catherine Toney, Waycobah and Jessie Francis, Eskasoni; brothers, Martin and Noel, both of Waycobah and Bertram, Eskasoni; 10 nieces; seven nephews and two grand-nephews. Also surviving are foster parents, Levi and Bridget Denny, Eskasoni; five foster sisters and four foster brothers.
Predeceased by sister, Cecelia Bernard and nephew, Jason Johnson.
Visitation after 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the family residence, 64 Subdivision Rd., Waycobah. Funeral mass at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Waycobah, with Rev. Bernie MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
