Jennifer Keeping
24, Point Aconi
Jennifer Jane Keeping, 24, a resident of Marsh’s Lane, Point Aconi, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of Willard and Shirley (Richards) Keeping, Point Aconi.
She was a student at University College of Cape Breton, she had completed a four-year degree program and was planning to attend law school following graduation this year. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
Jennifer was a volunteer with the Elizabeth Fry Society, involved with a group for the disabled at UCCB. In her younger years she was a member of CGIT, she attended the Sir Frederick Fraser School for the blind in Halifax for four years. She was the first blind student to complete the school system in the Northside area and the first blind student to successfully complete her degree program at UCCB. She was a spokesperson for disabilities and guide dogs in the school system, she loved music, especially singing and playing the piano.
Surviving are her parents, Willard and Shirley; two sisters, Kelly Lynn (Douglas) Holloway, Millville, Joanne (fiancé Sam Baggieri), Scarborough, Ont.; one niece, Meagan; one nephew, Douglas; a special friend, Peter Forgeron; paternal grandmother, Millie Keeping, Point Aconi; maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Connolly, North Sydney. Also survived by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Willard Keeping, an uncle, Berkley and an aunt, Evelyn.
Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday) and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral services 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial to take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association, CNIB or to a charity of one’s choice.
Mansell James Penny
64, North Sydney
Mansell James Penny, 64, a resident of 88 Pierce St., North Sydney, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late Bill and Annie Jane (Hawley) Penny.
He was employed as a coal miner with the Cape Breton Development Corp. for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. Mansell always enjoyed spending time at the North Sydney Forum watching his son playing hockey.
Surviving are his wife, Betty (Morrison); two daughters, Cathy and Patsy, both of North Sydney; one son, Blaine, at home; one granddaughter, Tracey; five brothers, George (Irene), Sydney Mines, Ambrose (Nellie), North Sydney, Alec, North Sydney, John (Claudia), North Sydney and Gordie, North Sydney; one sister, Sadie (Mrs. Dave MacPherson), North Sydney.
He was predeceased by one son, Billy.
A private family visitation will be held in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the Canadian Diabetic Association.
Jason Derek Blundon
28, Dutch Brook
Jason Derek Blundon, 28, of Dutch Brook, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born and raised in Dutch Brook, he was a son of Ronald and Marie (Walker) Blundon.
Jason was a graduate of Riverview Rural High School in 1990 and attended UCCB in 1991. He obtained an Industrial Welding Course in 1999.
He is survived by four brothers, Danny (Susie), Halifax, Billy (Arlene), Barrie, Ont., Warren (Natalie), Marion Bridge and Blair (Willena), Cape North; one niece, Gillian and six nephews, Daniel, Mathew, Cory, Carl, Spencer and Kevin and also two godchildren.
Jason was an avid fisher and hunter who loved nature. He was a kind and generous brother; uncle, son and nephew to all.
He will be sadly missed by all family and friends.
Visitation was held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and will be held today (Friday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A funeral service will be held in the chapel, Saturday 2 p.m. with the Rev. Fraser MacDonald officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of choice.
Ellen Louise Gregor
92, New Waterford
Ellen Louise Gregor, 92, a resident of Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford, and a former resident of 430 Mahon St., New Waterford, passed away quietly Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, in the manor.
Born in Dominion, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Adeline (McCulloch) Gregor.
Ellen was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a member of Calvin United Church and the Eastern Star. She held many positions over the years with the Dominion Coal Company, Schwartz of New Waterford, McCurdy’s and the post office.
She was predeceased by a sister, Georgina; brothers, Fred, Harry, William, Frank, Jack, Ralph and James.
There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in Calvin United Church, Sunday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in Gordon United Church Cemetery, Reserve.
Memorials may be made to the Maple Hill Manor or Calvin United Church.

Katherine Christina MacDonald
90, Sydney
Katherine Christina MacDonald, 90, of The Cove Guest Home, formerly, 853 George St., Sydney, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at the Cove.
Born in Glace Bay, Katherine was a daughter of the late Duncan and Christina (MacDonald) MacKenzie.
She was a member of the First United Church, Sydney and the UCW. Katherine was a graduate of Addison & Gilbert Hospital, Boston, and a retired nurse.
Katherine is survived by her sister, Vivian Miller, Sydney.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ainslie, a sister, Grace Edwards, and a brother, Colin Kenzie.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service in the chapel Saturday 10 a.m. with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Interment in Riverside Cemetery, Hornes Road.
Memorials may be made to the First United Church.
Andrew J. Miller
Sydney Mines
It is with deep regret that the family of Andrew J. Miller of Pond Road, Sydney Mines, announce the passing of a beloved husband and father at the Northside General Hospital on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000.
Andrew or Andy as he was affectionately known by his CNR buddies was born in Sydney Mines, the son of the late George and Mary (Brazitis) Miller.
He was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas with the Cape Breton Highlanders. Andrew was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8, Sydney Mines. He was a dedicated employee of the Canadian National Railway for 33 years, retiring in 1984. Andrew was also a member of the CN Pensioners Club.
A man who lived for his family and was kind to everyone and every animal who came into his path he leaves a legacy of love and peace.
Andrew leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Elsie (MacQueen) Miller; five sons, Gordon (Brenda), Petawawa, Ont., Rikki, Sydney, Gary (Brenda), Sydney Mines, Kevin (Jennifer), Bras d’Or and Chris (Tanya), Sydney Mines; his five grandchildren Sean, Tanya, Andrew, Blake and Kayla, and his sister, Alice Ross, Sydney.
Andy also leaves behind a wonderful group of dedicated caregivers at the Harbourview Hospital, Veterans’ Wing.
He was predeceased by four brothers, George, Frank, Alec and Juck and three sisters, Agnes, Annie and Nancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held Saturday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. A reception will be held following the mass at the parish hall for family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Research or the SPCA.
