Mansell James Penny
64, North Sydney
Mansell James Penny, 64, a resident of 88 Pierce St., North Sydney, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late Bill and Annie Jane (Hawley) Penny.
He was employed as a coal miner with the Cape Breton Development Corp. for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. Mansell always enjoyed spending time at the North Sydney Forum watching his son playing hockey.
Surviving are his wife, Betty (Morrison); two daughters, Cathy and Patsy, both of North Sydney; one son, Blaine, at home; one granddaughter, Stacey; five brothers, George (Irene), Sydney Mines, Ambrose (Nellie), North Sydney, Alec, North Sydney, John (Claudia), North Sydney and Gordie, North Sydney; one sister, Sadie (Mrs. Dave MacPherson), North Sydney.
He was predeceased by one son, Billy.
A private family visitation will be held in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the Canadian Diabetic Association.
Velma Cecelia Wadden
73, Long Beach Road, Port Morien
Velma Cecelia Wadden, 73, of 225 Long Beach Rd., Port Morien, passed away peacefully at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James and Sadie (Waye) Whalen.
Mrs. Wadden was a former employee of the Children’s Training Centre, Sydney, N.S. and a member of the Nova Scotia Government Retired Employees Union. She was a member of the St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien and past member of the St. Paul’s ladies auxiliary and the ladies auxiliary of Branch No. 55 Royal Canadian Legion, Port Morien.
Mrs. Wadden is survived by her husband, Lawrence; one daughter, Lynne (Mrs. Bruce May), Saskatchewan; three sons, Robert (Arlene), Port Morien, Brian (Bertha), Donkin and Everett (Dorothy), Donkin Highway; nine grandchildren, Kelly and Laurie May, Angela and Keith Wadden, Anita, Andrew and Adam Wadden, Jeffry and Michelle Wadden. Also surviving are four brothers, Joseph, Ontario, Henry, Glace Bay, Llewellyn (Patsy), Rannie (Marilyn), both of Glace Bay and five sisters, Mary Lou (Mrs. Art Billard), Ursula Hines, Lucy Jackson, Neena Fowler, all of Glace Bay and Hughena (Mrs. Allie MacIntyre), Ontario.
She was predeceased by a brother, James (Junior) Whalen.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Sunday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. in St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien with Fr. Paul C. Findlay officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Black Brook, Port Morien.
Donations may be made to St. Paul’s Anglican Church or to a charity of choice.
Alice Riley
97, Sydney
Alice Riley, 97, of the Carefield Manor, formerly of Kings Road, passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bridgeport, Alice was a daughter of the late Neil and Christie (MacAskill) MacLeod.
She was a member of the Westminister Bible Presbyterian Church, Sydney.
Alice is survived by her two sons, Wilfred A. (Hannah), Alberta and Allister N. (Helen), Sydney; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence in 1973, a sister, Margaret, two brothers, Ronald and John and a son and daughter in infancy.
There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held in the chapel, Monday 3 p.m. with Pastor James Murchinson officiating. Interment in Eastmount Cemetery.
Lenore (Nora) Power
76, Sydney River
Lenore (Nora) Power, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, formerly of 156 Fatima Dr., Sydney River, passed away peacefully at the home on Friday, Feb. 25, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine MacKinnon.
In her earlier years Nora was employed at Commercial Equipment and later at Woolco Pharmacy. Nora will be remembered by her friends as an avid skater and one who loved to dance and bake.
Nora is survived by one son, Gerald (Kelly), Howie Centre; one daughter, Patricia (Rob) Macdonald, Warne Street, Sydney; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Laura Macdonald, Ryan and Brennen Power; two sisters, Sara (Louis) Shaheen, Westmount and Margaret Cox, Sydney.
She was predeceased her husband, William (Bill), five brothers and two sisters.
There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Tuesday, Feb. 29 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palliative Care or to a charity of one's choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney.
Michael Gerard (Arkey) Neville
48, Sydney
Michael Gerard Neville, a resident of 1491 Victoria Rd., Sydney, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at home.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Michael J. and Mary (Babs) (MacLean) Neville.
He was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish and a member of the Labourers' Union.
Gerard was a generous, gentle person, whose giving personality made him many friends during his life. He was an avid hockey and baseball fan and through the years played both sports.
He is survived by brothers, Mel (Janet) and Len (Grace), both of Sydney; sisters, Patsy (Peter Gillis), Sydney and Marnie (Dan Cash), Irish Cove; also by a sister-in-law, Mary.
He was predeceased by a brother, Neil (in 1995).
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Cape Breton SPCA.
Arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.

Wilfred (Billy) McPhee
84, Sydney
Wilfred (Billy) McPhee, 84, well known Scottish fiddler of 39 Glenda Cres., Sydney, died peacefully on Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Lower River Inhabitants, Richmond County on Sept. 16, 1915, he was the son of the late Louis and Mary (Decoste) McPhee.
He was a member of Saint Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney. He was employed with Sydney Steel for 38 years until his retirement in 1979. In 1995, he was honoured by the City of Sydney for his outstanding work as a volunteer.
Billy was a lifetime member of the Cape Breton Fiddlers Association.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, the former Sadie MacDonald of Creignish; three sons, Donnie (Linda), Lincoln (Carol), both of Sydney and Raymond (Janet), Bridgewater; four daughters, Anne (Angus) MacDonald, Hughena MacIntyre, Westmount, Kay (Paul) Dixon, Sydney River and Wilma (Tom) Pyke, Sydney.
"Poppa" will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family, 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Peter, Henry, Leo and Clifford, six sisters, Eva, Mary B., Annie, Dolena, Betty and Mary.
The late Mr. McPhee will have visitation 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, George Street, Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney, with interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
