Norma Marion Crane
70, Sydney
Norma Marion Crane, 70, of Kings Rd. Sydney, passed away Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Nellie (Annesty) Horton. She was a member of Sydney River United Protestant Church and a life-time member of the UCW with the church.
Norma is survived by her husband Moses, son Terry, Revelstock, B.C., two daughters, Deborah (Grant) MacDonald, Dorchester, N.B., and Karen (Marco) Gallelli, Ottawa, two sisters Lois (Harold) Twerd, Ottawa, and Marjorie (James) MacDonald, Edmonton and four grandchildren Selena, Alana, Kaydin and Connor.
She was predeceased by a brother David.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Sydney River United Protestant Church with Rev. Alan MacIntosh officiating. Burial at Alfred Smith Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation or the Sydney River Protestant Church Memorial Fund.
Marilyn Estwick
73, Glace Bay
Marilyn Cecile Estwick, 43, of 33 Jessome St., Glace Bay, died Saturday, Feb. 26. 2000, in the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Margaret (Brewster) and the late Joseph Estwick.
Marilyn was a member of St. Leo’s Parish. She was employed with the Sobeys grocery chain for the past 25 years and at the time of her death she was an employee with the Sobeys Store on Prince St. in Sydney. She served on the Board of Directors of Brass Tacks and at one time served as treasurer.
She is survived by four sisters, Julia, Barbara, Margaret and Joan, (Mrs. Brian Brown), all of Glace Bay, two brothers Joseph (Susan), Glace Bay and Walter (Elsa), British Columbia and a number of nieces and nephews. Marilyn was also a Godmother to Alicia Brown.
Besides her father she was predeceased by a sister Mary.
Visitation will be held Monday in Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Leo’s Church with Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Angus Archie MacLeod
68, Farmboise Intervale
Angus Archie MacLeod, 68, of Framboise Intervale, died on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at home.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Dan Alex and Catherine (MacLeod) MacLeod.
He was a retired miner and sawmill operator. He was a member and Elder of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of Sons of Temperance.
Angus is survived by his wife, the former Lily MacLeod, three sons, Norman Alex (Jean), Gabarus Lake, Angus Philip (Sarah Jane), Framboise Intervale, and Jackie Eric (Suzanne), Fourchu, twin sister Rhodena (Charlie Angus MacLeod), Stirling, three brothers, Dannie and Dan Norman, both of Stirling, and Karron Angus (Fay), Howie Center. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Leah, Adam, Jo-Ann and Eileen and his step-mother Margaret (MacQueen) MacLeod of Stirling.
Visitation Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Framboise. Funeral service will be from the church on Wednesday, 2 p.m., with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mary Lorraine MacNeil
60, New Waterford
Mary Lorraine MacNeil, 60, of 213 Convent Street, New Waterford, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, in New Waterford. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late John Angus and Mary Ann (MacKinnon) MacNeil. She was a member of Saint Agnes Church and the CWL. She was a retired teacher having taught in various schools in New Waterford. Lorraine was a member of the New Waterford Cancer Society, had been a Brownie leader and was active in various community activities.
She is survived by her brother, Roy (Judy), Ottawa, one niece Shauna (Rob Spearman), Ottawa and one nephew Steven (Louise) MacNeil, Ottawa.
Visitation for the late Lorraine MacNeil will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford, Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Wednesday, March 1, at 10 a.m. in Saint Agnes Church with Father Bob Neville officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
William (Bill) Maksymiw
75, Sydney River
William (Bill) Maksymiw, 75, of 53 Roslyn St., Sydney River, formerly of 162 Webster St., Whitney Pier, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at the Harbour View Hospital, DVA unit.
Born at Whitney Pier, he was the son of the late Dmytro and Theodosia (Hryciuk) Maksymiw.
He was a member of Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church. He retired in 1983 from the Sydney Steel Corporation as a foreman at the Docks with over 40 years service due to a massive heart attack. Also, he was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas in the army.
He is survived by one sister Rose, Sydney River.
He was predeceased by one brother Stephen in 1977.
The late Mr. Maksymiw will have no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place.
Burial will take place in St. Theresa’s Cemetery, Sydney, in the family plot.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Shaun McNeil
33, Alder Point
William Shaun McNeil, 33, of Alder Point passed into God’s loving hands Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy struggle with complications from diabetes.
Born in Alder Point, he was the son of Earl and Florence (O’Toole) McNeil. Shaun was a graduate of Memorial High School and later attended AVTC. He was employed with Nova Scotia Power as a stationary engineer until his illness.
Shaun is the beloved brother of Joey (Cecelia), Gary (Jane), Jimmy, Alder Point, Nancy (James) LeBlanc, Alberta, Anita (Neil) Finney, Angie (Chris) Penny, Donna (Joey) Boutilier, all of Alder Point and Tracey (Kevin) White, Ontario. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews Teresa, Amy, April, Michelle, D.J., Kyle, Allen, Jenny, Kelly, Brody and Chantel and his foster child Renato Contreras. He was predeceased by his infant sister Mary, his paternal grandparents Angus and Gladys McNeil and his maternal grandparents Raymond and Ella O’Toole.
He was a member of St. Anne’s Parish, Alder Point. He truly enjoyed his volunteer work with the Bras d’Or, Florence and Area Kinsmen. He always loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, trying to stump them with challenging trivia questions. Shaun was always ready to plan missions or vacations for everyone. He was a generous, gentle person whose giving personality made him many friends during his life. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. He will always be our heartline. Shaun was a true advocate of organ donation.
Visitation today (Monday) 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The Funeral will take place Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Alder Point.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the CNIB or the Kidney Foundation or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
