Dolena McCormick
84, Sydney Mines
Dolena McCormick, 84, of 67 Atlantic Street, Sydney Mines, died Saturday Jan. 1, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Annie MacKinnon. She was a member of St Pius X Parish, Sydney Mines.
Dolly is survived by her sons Raymond (Bernadette) and Michael (Hilda), Sydney Mines; her daughters Florence Ross, Bras d’Or, Ann McCormick, Mildred (Lloyd) Forrest, Sydney Mines, Marilyn (Michael) Bennett, Scarborough Ont. and Carolyn (Michael) Myers, Burlington Ont.; half-sisters Violet Henery, Burlington, Ont, Bernadette (Benny) House, Hamilton Ont.; half-brother Danny Hawley, Sydney Mines. She was loved by 29 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Raymond (Jerry) McCormick and a half-sister Sue MacKinnon; four grandsons and a granddaughter.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at 11 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines.
Arrangements are under the direction of G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
Margaret Finlayson McDonald
84, Glace Bay
Margaret Finlayson McDonald, 84, of 21 Fraser Street, Glace Bay, and formerly of Reserve Mines, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Reserve Mines, she was the daughter of the late John and Agnes (Sinclair) Stewart. Margaret was employed at the family business Stewart’s Hotel in Reserve for many years and with Kresge’s Dept. Store in Toronto, Ont. Margaret was a member of Gordon United Church, Reserve Mines.
Margaret is survived by sister-in-law Peggy Stewart, Westville, N.S., and several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband Edmund McDonald; brothers, John, James, Donald and Robert.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 4, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. with funeral service to follow in Patten Funeral Home Chapel, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay, with Rev. David MacLean officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gordon United Church or a charity of choice.
Marie Alice Richardson
74, Port Morien
Marie Alice Richardson, 74, of Black Brook, Port Morien, and formerly Kliene Heights, Halifax, died December 29, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Marie (Evens) Rowe. Marie came to Cape Breton five years ago and lived with her only daughter Eileen (Mrs. Roy Shepard).
Marie is survived by sisters Helen (Leo) Oakley, Halifax, and Doris (Earl) MacLean, Halifax; brother Edwin (Lillian) Rowe, Halifax, and five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husbands James Richardson and Frank Munroe; brother Haven; sister Nettie and a great-granddaughter Christina Marie.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will he held in Halifax at a later date. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, Glace Bay.
J. Allister Ross
82, Sydney
J. Allister Ross, 82, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly, Union St., Sydney, passed away at Breton Bay Nursing Home on December 28, 1999.
Born in Sydney on September 24, 1917, he was a son of the late Jack and Gillie Ross. Al was a well-known lawyer and after practicing with Smith-McIvor, he became Registrar of Probate in Sydney. Upon his retirement, he worked with New Dawn Enterprises Ltd., Sydney, as a consultant. He was also a music enthusiast and in earlier years, Al was an active member of the First United Church Choir.
He was predeceased by his brother, Roy.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will take place at First United Church on Thursday, Jan. 6, with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Interment will be in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Mary Louise Russell
74, North Sydney
It is with deep sorrow we announce the peaceful death of Mary Louise Russell, 74, a resident of Tobin Road Extension, North Sydney, which occurred at home Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, surrounded by her loving family after a lengthy illness.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was a daughter of the late Elias and Mary Landry. She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, North Sydney.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years John Russell; daughters Jean (Douglas) Cavanaugh, Ruth (Roy) Steffens, both of North Sydney; son Peter (Linda) Russell, Georges River; five brothers James, William, Chuck, Lloyd and Edward, all of Ontario; three sisters Mildred (Mrs. William Russell), North Sydney, Adelaide of Ontario and Theresa of Frenchvale. Also by a special great-grandson Daniel and by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She had a special place in her heart for all of them.
She was predeceased by daughter Sheila in infancy; son Daniel in 1996 and a brother Wilfred.
A mother to all that knew her and loved her. For her quick wit and humorous attitude she will be missed by all who knew her. She loved all children as she loved life and would give her only belongings to others whom she thought were in need. She often said that there was always room for one more hungry person at the family table. She did this without question and with a good heart. Heaven will be a far better place and a great celebration will take place upon her arrival.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from Our Lady of Sorrows Church with Rev. Peter Piva officiating. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Memorial donations can be made to the Palliative Care or Canadian Cancer Society.
Mary Ryan
78, Sydney Mines
Mrs. Mary M. Ryan, 78, 2 Devoe St., Sydney Mines, passed away, Jan. 1, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, after a lengthy illness.
The daughter of the late Andrew and Georgina (Rateau), McDonald, Sydney Mines, she was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred Ryan, also by brothers John J., Angus, and Andrew (in infancy), and by sisters Elizabeth (Felix) Boyd, London, Ont. and Theresa (Leonard) McCormick, Sydney Mines.
She is survived by her son, William Ryan, Sydney Mines, and two granddaughters Julie and Nicole; also by brothers Donald, London, Ont., and James and Edward, Sydney Mines, and sisters Agnes (Ron) MacDonald and Doris (Ronald) McCormick, London, Ont. and Annie (Adrian) O’Toole, Sydney Mines.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the G.R. Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, where visitation was held on Sunday, Jan., 2, 2-4 p.m., 7 -9 p.m. Funeral is to take place at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 3, with Mass at St. Pius X, Roman Catholic Church, Sydney Mines, Rev. Tony MacDonald, celebrant; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.
