Thelma Maude Scott
85, Sydney
Thelma Maude Scott, 85, loving wife of Fred Scott of St. Peters Road, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, Thelma was a daughter of the late Fred and Winnifred (Richards) Turner. She and her husband Fred owned and operated Scott’s Hardware in Ashby for over 40 years. She was a member of First United Church, a faithful choir member, a member of the Variety Unit UCW, long-time treasurer of Sunday School and Time Out, Life Member of the Kinettes, member of the Community Concert.
Mom leaves behind two sons Lloyd (Elinor), Ottawa, and Robert (Shirley), Sydney; six grandchildren Rod and Sandra, Ottawa, Suzanne, Halifax, Rob, St. John’s, Sheri, Chezzetcook, Robert, Montreal; five great-grandchildren, one special sister, Freda Lynk.
She was predeceased by by husband Frederick; three sisters, Irma, Audrey, Ada, one brother Clifford.
Her family will welcome visitors at the Sydney Memorial Chapel, Monday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held in First United Church, Tuesday, 11 a.m. with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating with interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorials in mom’s name may be made to First United Church Choir; N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of choice.
Jenny Doreen Lorinda Smith
Birch Grove
Jenny Doreen Lorinda Smith passed away peacefully at her home in Birch Grove, on Jan. 2, 2000.
Born on July 1, 1931, in Beersville, N.B., the daughter of the late James and Emily (Betts). She was a former employee of the Glace Bay General Hospital and Seaview Manor. She was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien.
Mom leaves behind our dad Ralph; sons Ralph Jr. (Leesa), Birch Grove, Fred (Lynn), Whitby, Ont.; daughters, Debbie (Doug) Myers, Quispamsis, N.B., Peggy (Bruce) Howie, Donkin, Darlene (Kevin), Musycsyn, Sydney; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brother Bob (Bev) Betts, Birch Grove.
Predeceased by a brother Fred; sisters Patsy and Donna.
She will be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews and her special buddy Missy.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Palliative Care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be held Tuesday 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later.
Roy Lawrence Snow
67, Sydney
Roy Lawrence Snow, 67, of Pond Rd., Sydney Mines, formerly of Clyde River, N.S., died Jan. 1, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born at Clyde River, he was the son of the late Roy and Mabel (Gosbee) Snow. He was a member of the 48th Highlanders in Toronto for 17 years leaving as a sergeant. When he returned to Cape Breton, he worked for National Sea for 13 years until his retirement. Roy also belonged to the Maritime Horseshoe Organization.
Surviving are his wife, the former Sharon Evans; daughter Ruth Ann Snow, at home; two sons, Dale, at home and Jamie, British Columbia; two sisters Olive (Mrs. Bob Johnson) and Irene Vincent, both of Ontario. Also surviving are four grandchildren and a cousin Mr. Ray Harris.
Predeceased by a brother Russell and a sister Eva.
The late Mr. Snow will have no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home Chapel, 10 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, with the Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial in Clyde River United Cemetery, Clyde River, N.S.
Pearl Bryne
84, Westmount
Pearl Bryne, 84, of Fulton Avenue, Westmount, passed away at home on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000.
Born April 14, 1915, in Port aux Basques, Nfld., Pearl was the daughter of the late Robert Arthur and Mary Alice (Richards) Rose. She was retired from F.W. Woolworth Co. and was a member of St. Aidan’s Anglican Church, Westmount.
Mrs. Bryne is survived by her three children, daughters, Pearl MacAulay, Halifax and Sandra (Bruce) Campbell, Westmount; one son, Tim Bryne, Bedford; five grandchildren, Shelley, Ken and Angela MacAulay and Darren Campbell and Mary-Beth Bryne; three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Kenny and Joshua.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Marsha and a stepbrother, Alex Rose.
She will be sadly missed by all.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday), Jan. 4, and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held at St. Aidan’s Anglican Church, Westmount, Thursday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James Purchase officiating. Interment will be in Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the N.S. Lung Association.
Sr. Clarissa Chisholm
88, Antigonish
Sister Clarissa Chisholm, at the age of 88, died quietly at Bethany on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, in the 67th year of her religious life.
Born in St. Andrew’s, Antigonish County, N.S., Sister Clarissa was baptized Flora. She was the daughter of the late John of Caledonia Mills and Mary (MacGillivray) Chisholm of Upper Springfield, Antigonish County, N.S.
Sister Clarissa entered the Sisters of St. Martha on Sept. 8, 1930, having previously taught school one year. After profession Sister Clarissa obtained her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics in 1936 at St. Francis Xavier University, Dietitian Diploma, Ottawa General Hospital in 1937 and completed four years in hospital dietetics at St. Martha’s Hospital.
Sister spent many years in hospital administration, Mineral Springs Hospital, Banff, 1943-49, St. Rita Hospital, Sydney, 1950-61, and St. Michael’s Hospital, Lethbridge, 1967-80. In the capacity, she also held positions on the executives of many provincial and national hospital administrations and councils.
Throughout her religious life, Sister Clarissa served in congregation leadership as Superior for 16 years, General Treasurer for six years, General Councillor for two terms, 12 years and Administrator at the Motherhouse for eight years, Little Flower Institute, Bras d’Or for two years. Until her death, she continued to minister at the Motherhouse.
She is survived by her sister, Mary K. Bailey.
She is predeceased by her brother, Augustine Joseph (Gussie) and Sister Mary Joannes, CSM.
The remains are resting at Bethany Motherhouse after 1:15 p.m. today where a Bible Vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. in the Bethany Chapel.
Arrangements are under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home.
Mary Rowena Dick
82, Bras d'Or
It is with deep sorrow we announce the peaceful death of Mary Rowena Dick, 82, a resident of Bras d’Or, occurred Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Rowena and John Allen.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Sydney Mines.
Mary was a teacher for many years and provided a nurturing and loving environment for many children. She was the centre of our family and provided a strong and loving home for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as a host of others whom she loved dearly. Her door was always open and her warm, welcoming smile a beacon to all who came to visit. She loved the Lord and her faith was strong.
She is survived by her son, Allen (Karen), daughter, Isabelle, both of Bras d’Or; four grandchildren, Cathy (Doug) Pilgrim, Mary Lou (Murray) MacLeod, Sherrilyn (Dale) Morrison, Deanne Dick; five great-grandchildren, Amanda, Douglas, Corey, Erica, Katie; one brother, Rev. George P. Allen (June), Clementsvale; one sister, Mabel (Mansel) Warren, North Sydney.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur MacKay Dick, sister, Cora (Allen) MacDonald and brothers, Herman Allen and Eastwood (Dill) Allen.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday 2 p.m. from Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hannem officiating. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Calvary Baptist Church or to a charity of choice.
