Mary (Mish) Power
82, Sydney
Mary (Mish) Power, 82, Sydney, a resident of the Cove and formerly of 1244 Victoria Rd., passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was the third eldest of seven children born to John and Mary Ann (McCormack) McDonald, late of Sydney, N.S. Apart from her residency at the Cove Guest Home, she was a lifelong resident of Whitney Pier.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia (Vern) MacDonald, Sydney, and a son, Bernard (Valerie), Halifax; two sisters, Helen (Dr. Joe Roach), New Waterford, and Cecilia Curry, Stellarton, N.S.; and two brothers, Angus (Jeanne), Etobicoke, Ont., and John, Halifax, N.S.; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann and Shaun Patrick MacDonald, both of Sydney and many nieces and nephews who especially will miss her.
Besides her parents, Mary (Mish) was predeceased by her husband, Patrick, her brother, Bernard, and her son, Phillip.
As a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, Mary (Mish) was a devout parishioner of Holy Redeemer Parish and a longtime member of the CWL. During her lifetime, she had been employed at Newman’s, Moraff’s, and the steel plant, and had enjoyed an active life by participating in many recreational activities, in particular swimming, tennis, softball, ice skating, and hockey. She loved the C.B. Oilers hockey games, which she attended in the company of her grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 5, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. The funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church, Sydney. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Herbert Sanson
84, Westmount
Herbert Sanson, 84, Westmount, passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at home.
Born in Gin Cove, Trinity Bay, Nfld., he was a son of the late James and Catherine (Fry) Sanson.
In his youth, during the Great Depression, he worked with his family as a woodsman and a fisherman, in Newfoundland and Labrador. As a young man, he became the master of his own schooner and shipped freight along the coast. Mr. Sanson was employed as a rigger with Sydney Steel and retired as an outside mechanical general foreman after 41 years of service.
Following his retirement, he worked with the Corps of Commissionaires at the Sydney City Hospital and the Canadian Coast Guard College. During the Second World War, he served overseas with C Squadron, Royal Canadian Dragoons, 1st Canadian Division, in England and campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Belgium, France, and Holland. He was past president of Branch 126 of the Royal Canadian Legion, Westmount, and served as Zone Commander with the legion for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gloria (Ferguson) Sanson; four daughters, Elaine Hamilton, Dartmouth, Sheila (Terry) Phillipo, Westmount, Kathryn (Jeff) Thomson, Quispamsis, N.B., and Margaret, Westmount; four sons, Herbert (Cindy), Sydney, William (Margaret), Shawn (Sandra), and Glen, all of Westmount; a sister, Elizabeth, Trinity Bay, Nfld.; two brothers, Oswald, Chatham, Ont. and Gerald, Trinity Bay, Nfld.; 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Sanson was predeceased by his granddaughter, Rachel, brothers, William, Harvey, and George, and a sister, Eulalie.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday), Jan. 4, at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held in the chapel Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made of a charity of one’s choice.
Harold Skinner
89, Sydney
Harold Skinner, formerly of Central Street, Sydney, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at the Fairview Villa, Halifax.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Abraham and Ann (Hatcher) Skinner.
He was retired from the glass department of Chappell Building Supplies.
Harold is survived by his daughter, Harolyn (Harford) Wilson, Dartmouth; two sons, Greg, Halifax and Bradley, California; his sister, Elvina, California and brother, Reginald, Dartmouth. He is also survived by seven grandsons and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Cleophas (MacInnis), grandson, Gregory and brothers, Fred, Abraham, Percy, Charlie, Ralph and Roy.
There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5 at the T.K. Bernard Funeral Home, 527 Sackville Dr.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Jenny Doreen Lorinda Smith

Funeral service for the late Jenny Doreen Lorinda Smith, who passed away on Jan. 2, 2000, will be held Thursday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien with Fr. Paul C. Findlay officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Port Morien.
Theresa Walsh
70, Sydney
Theresa Walsh, 70, of Sydney, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Margaree, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Annie (Maillet) Arsenault.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; one son, Allan (wife Wanda); three sisters, Cecilia Brewer, Sydney, Agnes (Rose) Harkin, Halifax, Alice Roberts, Milton, Ont.; two brothers, Mike, Pickering, Ont., Simon, Margaree, and two grandchildren, Matthew and Ryan.
She was predeceased by four brothers, William, Joseph, Wilfred and Mose and by a sister, Margaret.
The body will rest at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Heart Church, George Street. Burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Georgina Carmella Young
81, Dominion
Georgina Carmella Young, age 81, of 78 Dominion St., Dominion, passed away, Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Reserve, she was the daughter of the late Angus Patrick and Catherine (Gallant) MacNeil.
She was a member of St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion.
Surviving are daughters, Melinda, at home, Norma (Mrs. John Hardy), Glace Bay, and Marlene (Mrs. Ernie MacGillivary), New Waterford; son, Alonzo “Tim” (Carmelita), Dominion; brothers, Reginald, Reserve and William, Broughton; sisters, Mary Catherine and Dinisha, both of Reserve, Josephine and Bernadette, both of Glace Bay. Also surviving are six grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren and a special niece, Tossie.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Alonzo, son William Thomas, granddaughter, Mary Joanne, brothers, Francis Jerome, John Angus, Alonzo Patrick, Daniel Joseph and sisters, Annie Florence and Mary Elizabeth.
There will be no visitation for the late Mrs. Young. A memorial mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, in St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Mrs. Young’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
