William A. Cameron, of Arlington, Mass., formerly of Sydney River, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999.
Husband of the late Rita Marie (Hickey); loving father of Alexandra Mills, Paula C. Merlvzzo, Margie Lopes and Douglas, James, Glenda, Kenneth and the late Annemarie. Brother of John, Anne and Mary T. (Minnie).
The funeral was held Saturday, Dec. 18 in Arlington, followed by a mass of Christian burial and interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Heart Association.
Jeanette Florence Carson
92, Halifax
Jeanette Florence Carson, 92, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, in the Windsor Elms.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late James and Agnes (MacMullin) Lawley.
She is survived by son, James (Gertrude); son-in-law, Russell; grandchildren, Anne, John, Janet.
She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Sheldon, daughter, Juliet.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was also predeceased by brothers, Leroy, Douglas, Willard, sisters, Mary, June.
She attended Provincial Normal College and Mt. St. Allison University, subsequently teaching at schools in Marconi Towers and Glace Bay. Always happiest when surrounded by a group of children, she had the reputation of a highly esteemed and skilled teacher.
For more than a quarter century, she led junior Sunday school at a number of communities where she was residing.
While living in Cape Breton she did pioneering work as a speech therapist, and was also actively involved in elocution and drama circles. A gifted, self-taught musician she had, during earlier years, performed in a Glace Bay band. A sports enthusiast, she played top level hockey and golf and was an avid skater and hiker. An artist of note, she painted still life, portrait, but especially the rural landscapes mainly around her beloved Cape Breton. Following study at Sydney’s Holy Angels Convent, she became an accomplished painter of porcelain. Very active in a host of community and church endeavours she was at- various times, associated with or held leading roles in a number of organizations including Girl Guides, CGIT, Beta Sigma Phi, IODE, UCW, Community Concert Organizations, and Kiwanis Music Festivals, in Cape Breton, Charlottetown, and in later years following her husband’s retirement, in Halifax and Kentville.
She will be widely and fondly remembered by friends and family alike for possessing a tremendous zest for living, for nature and nature’s God, always willing and even joyful to share her faith and her many talents with others.
Memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, in Windsor United Church, Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. Reception to follow in adjacent hall. Interment will take place 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien, with reception to follow for friends and family at 2:30 p.m. at St. John’s Church Hall, Port Morien.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or charity of choice.
Lucie Dumais
77, Chicago
Mary Barkhouse received word that her sister Lucie Dumais passed away on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in Chicago. Remains to arrive at a later date for memorial service at St. Ann’s Church, Glace Bay and will be announced at that time.
Lennard Weldon Hussey
46, Neil's Harbour
Lennard Weldon Hussey, 46, of Neil’s Harbour, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at the QEII Health Complex, Halifax Infirmary.
Born in Neil’s Harbour, he was the son of Rachael (Nash) Hussey and the late Benjamine Hussey.
He was a member of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Neil’s Harbour and was a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 85, Neil’s Harbour.
He served as councillor of District 11, Dingwall from 1985 to 1987. He was a former employee of Schwartz Co., North Sydney and most recently was employed at Lakeside Packers, Brooks, Alta.
His love of family and life was apparent in his yearly role as Santa Claus, visiting children on Christmas Eve. Lennie was loved and will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his Soul Mate “C”; sisters, Barb (Mrs. Fred Budge) and Norma (Mrs. Reid Warren), both of Neil’s Harbour, Sherryll (Mrs. Bob Murphy), Dartmouth; brothers, Lorne (Emily), Rexton, N.B., Stephen (Dale), North Sydney, Mark and Darryl, both in Rothsay, N.B.; nieces, Alisha, Stacy, Heather and Carla; nephews, Brian, Chris, Aaron and Michael and grandniece, Morgan Paige.
He was predeceased by his father, Benjamine Lennard and nephew, Benji.
Visitation will be in All Souls Chapel, Neil’s Harbour, Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church with the Rev. Chris McCann officiating. Burial under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home will be in the parish cemetery.
Emma Mae (Mary) LeBlanc
91, Alder Point
Emma Mae (Mary) LeBlanc, age 91, of 220 Alder Point, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late John William and Emma Jane (Reynolds) Marsh. She was a member of St Anne’s Parish, Alder Point.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary (Mrs. David O’Toole), Joyce (Mrs. James Paquet), Alder Point, Lillian (Mrs. John Forrest), Veronica (Mrs. Albert Theriault), Sydney Mines, Marguerite (Mrs. George Compton), Milville and Madonna (Mrs. John Thurbide), Bras d’Or; her sons, Joseph, at home, Cyril, Florence and William, North Sydney. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; her sisters, Lillian Chamberlain, Hamilton, Mable Vrochu, Alberta, Theresa Proudfoot, Halifax and Marguerite Duga, Mill Creek and her brother, Dennis Marsh, Mill Creek.
She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Walter LeBlance, her son, Francis LeBlanc, two daughters in infancy, two sisters and four brothers.
Visitation today (Wednesday) 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home. Funeral, Friday 10:30 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Alder Point with Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
Violet M. (Babe) Libbus
87, Sydney
Violet M. (Babe) Libbus, 87, of the Cove Guest Home, formerly of 305 Terrace St., Sydney, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at the residence, where she had lived for the past year.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Herbert W. and Mary Jane (Lewis) Watkins of Sydney.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by three daughters, Louise (Murray) Matheson, Esther (Alex) Tomko and Karen Boozan, all of Sydney; three sons, Joseph C. Libbus, Sydney, Charles H. (Sandy) Libbus, River Bourgeois, Rodney C. Watkins, Mira; 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles J. Libbus in 1973, two sons in infancy, two brothers, Lewis and Alfred and by a sister, Jean.
The late Mrs. Libbus will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Theresa’s Church with the Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
