Clarence (Cal) Noseworthy
87, Sydney River
Clarence (Cal) Noseworthy, 87, Green Acres Drive, Sydney River, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000.
Born in Sydney, Cal was a son of the late Charles and Patience (Brown) Noseworthy.
He was a member of Sydney River United Protestant Church. At one time, Cal worked for the Dominion Steel & Coal Company, Mullins Coal Bank Division, and in 1976, he retired from the maintenance department of the Woolco Department Store.
Cal is survived by his wife, Catherine “Kaye” (Hill); two daughters, Sharon (Hubert) Poirier and Valerie (Ken) Keller, both of Sydney River; a son, Howie (Colleen), Coxheath; a sister, Dora MacDonald, Sydney; brothers, Ted (Marg), Howie Center and Wesley (Chris), Westmount and six grandchildren, Derek, Deborah, Craig, Natalie Gallaway, Dwayne and Jonathan.
He was predeceased by his sister, Zelma MacKenzie.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday, Jan. 5, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be Thursday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. at Sydney River United Protestant Church, with Rev. Alan McIntosh officiating. Interment will be in Alfred Smith Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Sydney River United Protestant Church Memorial Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Angus Hubert MacIntyre
62, Glace Bay
Angus Hubert MacIntyre, 36 Chappel Dr., Glace Bay, passed away at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John Francis and Sarah Elizabeth (MacNeil) MacIntyre. He was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corporation at Prince Colliery. In earlier years he was employed at St. Anne’s Parish and the Cape Breton Bus Company. He was a long-time member of St. Anne’s Church.
Surviving are his wife, the former Judy Spracklin; three sons Brian (Vanessa), Glace Bay, John, at home and Paul, Winnipeg; one daughter Anne Marie, at home. She is also survived by one sister Sis (Lawrence) MacPhee and three grandchildren Krystin, Michael and Nicholas.
Visitation will be in the Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., on Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Doug Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations to the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton are suggested as memorials.

At Versa Care Nursing Home, Brantford, Ont. (formerly of 207 Lingan Rd., Sydney, N.S.) on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, in her 101st year, Annie O’Leary, beloved wife of the late James Byrne and the late John O’Leary.
Dear mother of John Byrne and his wife, Teresa, St. Joseph, Ont., Rita Haroldson and her husband Leonard, Edward Byrne and his wife Joan, James Byrne and his wife Lenore, all of Winnipeg, Margaret Fowler and her husband Royce, Evelyn Lewis, all of Brantford and predeceased by Joan Connors. Dear mother-in-law of Gary Connors, Dudley, Mass. and the late Richard Lewis.
Dear sister of Ambrose Byrne, Conche, Nfld. Loving grandmother of many many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, predeceased by her grandchildren, Joyce Byrne, Randy Byrne, Richard Lewis, Kevin Connors and a great-grandson, Ian Byrne.
Will be remembered by her many nieces and nephews of Newfoundland and by the children of the late John O’Leary.
Mass of Christian Burial at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, Brantford, Ont., Wednesday, 10 a.m. Interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Mary (Mish) Power, 82, Sydney, a resident of the Cove and formerly of 1244 Victoria Rd., passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000.

Michael Joseph Gardiner
78, New Waterford
Michael Joseph Gardiner, 78, a long time resident of the Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Michael and Annie (MacDonald) Gardiner. He was a member of St. Agnes Parish and worked in No. 12 Colliery until his retirement.
Surviving are a brother, Leo, Toronto; nephews, Jerry (Jean) Gardiner, Mira, Fred (Valerie), Greece; Donald (Sheron), River Ryan; Michael (Louise), Glace Bay, Myles (Denise), Gardiner Mines, David, (Shirley), New Waterford; nieces, Brenda (Mrs. Gordon MacGillivray), Toronto, Marie, New Waterford, Lynn, California.
He was predeceased by brothers, Alex, John Hughie, Duncan and James, sisters, Mary Elizabeth and Catherine.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place, Memorial service will be held Saturday 10 a.m. St. Agnes Church, New Waterford, Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are entrusted to the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.

Violet M. (Babe) Libbus
87, Sydney
Violet M. (Babe) Libbus, 87, of the Cove Guest Home, formerly of 305 Terrace St., Sydney, who passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Madeline (Sandy) Libbus, River Bourgeois.
Helen F. McLean
72, North Sydney
Helen Fern McLean, 72, a resident of Regent Street, North Sydney, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, in the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Leitches Creek, she was the daughter and only child of the late Hugh McKay and Grace (Oram) McLean.
Helen was a lifelong resident of Leitches Creek and North Sydney. Helen was employed by the Bank of Nova Scotia, North Sydney Branch for 42 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney where she was the Sunday school treasurer for many years and since her retirement she was the treasurer of the United Church Women and assistant treasurer of the church.
Surviving are several cousins.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to remember Helen and celebrate her life will be held Saturday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. in St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney with the Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery beside her parents in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church.
