Mary Ellen (Butts) Morrison
Glace Bay
Mary Ellen Morrison, 67, a long time resident of Lower Main Street, Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Big Pond, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Lydia Helen (McPhee) Butts.
She was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Mrs. Morrison was employed at Hopkins Fish Plant, Glace Bay. She was active as Sgt. at Arms, Executive member of Sgt. Mess, a former member of the Army/Navy Airforce, Glace Bay until her illness.
Mrs. Morrison is survived by daughters, Diane (Mrs. Charles Myles) and Lydia (Mrs. George Fortune), both of Dominion; sons, Dan Butts (wife Betty), Glace Bay and Harold Morrison (wife Dayle), Ontario; brothers, Tom Butts (wife Mary), Moncton and Neil Butts (wife Marie), Glace Bay; sisters, Mary (Mrs. Joe Kelly), Rose (Mrs. Roy MacDonald) and Bridget Radkey, all of Glace Bay. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harold Morrison and brother, Fred (Buckey) Butts.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Morrison will be held Friday, Jan. 7, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service Saturday at 10 a.m. both in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Fr. Doug Murphy will be officiating.
Joseph Amadee Saulnier
88, Halifax
Joseph Amadee Saulnier, 88, Halifax, passed away Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in the QE II, Halifax.
Born in Saulnierville, N.S., he was the son of the late Siford and Leonise (Comeau) Saulnier. He was the last surviving member of his family.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Josephine, Halifax; son, Bernard, Dartmouth and daughter, Shirley (John) Chesal, Howie Center and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by six brothers and three sisters.
Funeral mass was held Jan. 3, 2000, at St. Pius X, Fairview, N.S. with interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross Society or to a charity of one’s choice.
Angus (Gussie) Stewart
66, Glace Bay
Angus (Gussie) Stewart, 66, of 33 School St., Glace Bay, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Daniel and Katherine (Gillis) Stewart.
Angus was an adherent of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. He was an electrician by trade and was a faithful member of IBEW Local 1852. He served on several committees and was very active in union affairs.
Angus is survived by his wife, Bernice (Grant) Stewart; son, Stephen (Debra); daughter, Jennifer and grandchildren, Lacey and Jennifer; sisters, Pat McIntyre and Lollie (Richard) Penny.
He was predeceased by brothers, Lloyd, Doug and Don and a sister, Ann.
Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 7, 2000 from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Donations may be made to St. Paul’s Building Fund; Victorian Order of Nurses or Palliative Care of Cape Breton.
P. Murray Thwaites
65, Sydney
P. Murray Thwaites, 65, of Cherry Street, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000.
Born in Toronto, Murray was a son of the late Les and Bessie (Strom) Thwaites.
He was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and was retired from Canadian Brass and Copper, Concord, Ont.
Murray is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Mary (Dairou); two daughters, Theresa (Dana) MacQueen, Bedford and Debbie (Dougie) Delaney, Sydney; one son, Paul (Judy), Barrie, Ont.; a sister, Shirley (Bud) Alderton, Halburton, Ont.; brother, Ross, Perkinsville, Ont. and 10 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Ruth and Evelyn.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel, Friday, 2 p.m.
Lillian Johnston
101, Glace Bay
Lil Johnston, 101 of Glace Bay, died at the Seaview Manor, Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Jane (Midford) Patten.
Lil lived in Boston for a number of years. She was a member of Epworth United Church and a member of The Order of the Eastern Star.
Lil is survived by a daughter, Audrey (Charles McConnell), Florida; son, Edward (Phyllis) Johnston, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband, Rod Johnston, daughter, Jean Thomsen, brothers, James, Harry, Fred, Johnnie and William.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
Sadie Mae (Jobes) MacDonald
77, Sydney Mines
It is with heartfelt sorrow we the family of Mae MacDonald, 77, of 20 Yorke Street, Sydney Mines, make note of her passing at Northside General Hospital, Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, surrounded by her loving husband, children and grandchildren.
Born in St. Margarets Village, Victoria County, Mae was the only daughter of the late John and Sarah (MacEachern) Jobes and was a life long resident of Sydney Mines and fondly recalled numerous visits with extended family in Boularderie and Bay St. Lawrence. She was a parishioner of St. Pius X Church and an active member of the Catholic Women’s League.
Mae is survived by her husband of 59 years Robert MacDonald and her sixteen children, John, Robert Jr. (Mia), Marjorie (Mrs. Leo MacKinnon), Sarah Jane (Mrs. Thomas Finlayson), Walter (Lynette), Alounda MacDonald, Daniel (Marjorie), Angela (Mrs. James Jessome), Peter (Shirley), Gerard (Kimberly), Mary (Mrs. Larry Fraser), Donald (Shirley), Alan (Nancy), Paul (Frances), Nora MacDonald and Michael (Theresa). In addition, Mae also leaves to mourn 53 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother and neighbor John Dan Jobes and his family; brothers, Alex MacEachern, Simon MacKinnon, Alan Joseph MacKinnon and Alex Dan MacKinnon; sisters, Florence Bonnar, Marcella Buchanan, Margaret MacEachern and special friend Emma MacNeil.
She was predeceased by her biological parents, Peter and Elizabeth (MacEachern) MacKinnon; stepfather, John MacKinnon, Beatrice Fraser; sister-in-law, Nora Jobes; dearest grandchildren, Leah (MacKinnon) MacInnis and Corrina Jessome; great-grandchild, Liam Brown; and maternal aunts, Flora, Beatrice and Jessie, whom she fondly spoke about and remembered.
Mae was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who opened her heart and home and made welcome all those who entered. Her generosity, honesty and kindness touched and enriched many lives. She enjoyed and instilled the love of life and music in her children and appreciated God’s simple pleasures. Her life was stitched with joy, gentle smiles, love, worry, humor, burden, wit and atonement, but always her spirit remained undaunting and her faith steadfast.
Visitation will be 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Friday in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home. Funeral Mass Saturday 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church with Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
