Catherine Roslyn MacRae, 56, Baddeck died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at home. Memorial service is 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Andrews United Church, Baddeck Forks. Rev. David Lutes and Rev. Louis Ihasz officiating. Private family burial at a later date.
Mary Paul
Eskasoni
Mary Paul, 79, of Eskasoni, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Barra Head, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Bridget (Stevens) Battiste.
She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni.
Surviving are eight daughters, Grace (Mrs. George Sylliboy), Eskasoni, Bridget, Eskasoni, Mrs. Patricia Morris, Eskasoni, Loretta (Mrs. Ben Sylliboy), Eskasoni, Arlene (Mrs. Spencer Stevens), Florence (Mrs. Stephen Dennis), Mary (Mrs. Alfred Marshall) and Jacqueline (Mrs. Allan Young), all of Eskasoni; four sons, Peter Richard, Halifax, John Jerome (Sharon), Eskasoni, Sylvester (Brenda), Eskasoni and Gary (Jeanette), Dartmouth; two sisters, Mrs. Harriet Doyle, Chapel Island and Mrs. Mary Rose Gould, Membertou. Also surviving are 53 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband, Peter Paul in 1983, daughter, Josephine in infancy, three great-grandchildren, two brothers, Stephen and John and three sisters, Isabel, Mary Ann and Theresa.
The late Mrs. Paul will have visitation at the family residence, 4734 Shore Rd. after 7 p.m. Saturday. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Holy Family Church with Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in Holy Family Parish Cemetery, Eskasoni.

Sadie Mae (Jobes) Smyth
77, Sydney Mines
Adelaide Rose (Campbell) Smyth, 100, of MacGillivary Guest Home, formerly of Alexandra Street, Sydney, passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at the residence.
Born at Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (MacIntyre) Jamieson.
She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney and was an active member of the parish CWL. In her early days, Adelaide loved to participate in various sports particularly curling.
She is survived by one son, Charles A. (Leona), East Bay, with whom she resided for many years; one brother, Joseph Jamieson, Glace Bay; three grandchildren, Anne, Elaine and Charles and two great-grandchildren, Jason and Lachlan.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Charles E. in 1956, by her second husband, James Smyth in 1965, four brothers, Neil, Richard, Laughlin and John and two sisters, Mary and Catherine.
The late Mrs. Smyth will have visitation today (Friday) at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony Daniel Church with the Rev. E. MacNeil officiating.
Donations may be made to MacGillivary Guest Home or a charity of choice.
Effie Bayne
85, Sydney
Effie Bayne, Jefferson Lane, Sydney, passed away at St. George’s Channel on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000.
Born in Scotland, Effie was a daughter of the late John and Isabel (Muir) Balsillie. She was a member of St. Andrews Church and a former member of the UCW.
Effie is survived by her daughter, Muriel (John) Curtis, St. Georges Channel; two sons, William, Plymouth, Ind. and David, Sydney; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, William, a sister, Agnes and two brothers, David and George.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 1 p.m., with Rev. Dale Irving and Sharon Irving officiating. Interment will be in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Family flowers only, donations may be made to the organ or building fund of St. Andrew’s Church or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Mary Bruce
87, New Waterford/Dartmouth
Mary Bruce, 87, of New Waterford/Dartmouth, formerly of 3537 Spruce St., New Waterford, N.S., passed away peacefully at Oceanview Manor, Dartmouth, N.S. on Friday, Jan. 7, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Pansy Somerton.
Formerly a member of St. Agnes Parish, she was a member of the CWL and the Altar Society. She was a devoted wife and gentle loving mother. Her most enjoyable time was sharing in the lives of the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her kind deeds and thoughtfulness of others will always be remembered by relatives, friends and neighbours and all those with whom she came in contact. We will all miss her.
Survivors include son, Joe (Reynelda) Bruce, New Waterford; daughters, Lorraine (Edward) Pickett and Donna (Gary) Cameron, both of Dartmouth; grandchildren, Robert and Kenneth Bruce, Arlene (Paul) Hagen, Wayne (Sharon) Pickett, Bryan Pickett, Blair and Bruce Cameron; great-grandchildren, Sean, Mark, Kelsey Hagen and Laura Pickett.
She was predeceased by her husband, Martin in 1995 at which time Mary moved to Dartmouth.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was predeceased by sisters, Susie, Lizzie, Violet, Kattie and brothers, Johnny, Hector, Harold, Harry and Herbert.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Mount Carmel Church, Monday, 1 p.m. with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Immediately following, burial will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, N.S.

Nellie P. Hillier
101, Sydney Mines
Nellie Peace Hillier, 101, of Shore Road, Sydney Mines, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney.
Born in Yorkshire, England, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Jessie (Peace) Conway.
Nellie worked as a nurse’s aid in her earlier years. She was a member of St. Matthew-Wesley United Church in North Sydney and of the United Church Women Esther Ruth Unit and was a member of the church choir. She was also an honourary member of the North Sydney Garden Club. She was a former active member of the Quincy Point Congregational Church in Quincy, Mass. and was a former volunteer with the Red Cross in Quincy, Mass.
Surviving are husband, George; two daughters, Dorothy Foye and Betty DeCristofaro, both of Quincy, Mass.; son, Bobby Petzoldt, Quincy, Mass.; sister, Mabel Fenby, Cape Cod, Mass.; two stepsons, George Hillier and Harold Hillier, both of California; three stepdaughters, Mildred, Smith Falls, Ont., Dorothy, Loch Broom, Pictou County and Ruth, New Glasgow. Also by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, John Petzoldt, son, Jackie, daughter, Hilda, four stepdaughters, Marjorie, Maryon, Joan and Ida, two brothers, George and Stanley.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney with Rev. David Luker officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew-Wesley United Church.
