Mary MacNeil
86, Sydney
Mrs. Mary MacNeil, 86, of 47 Glenda Crescent, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Creignish Rear, she was the daughter of the late Donald A. MacDonald and Margaret MacDonald of Creignish Rear. She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish. She was also a member of the CWL. Mary was also an avid sports fan with a special love of baseball.
She is survived by five daughters Peggy MacMullin (Norman), Deanie MacNeil (J.K.) and Florence MacNeil (Dugga), all of Sydney, Bernardette Schella (Wally), Dartmouth, N.S., Corinne Taylor (Roy), Moncton, N.B.; three sons Dougie MacNeil (Karen) and Billy MacNeil, both of Merrit, British Columbia and Brent MacNeil, at home. Also surviving are three sisters Sadie MacPhee, Sydney, Mary Ann Ryan, Halifax and Catherine MacKenzie, Sydney; a brother Michael MacDonald, Burlington, Ont.; 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also survived by a special friend Lisa Samson.
Predeceased by husband Bernie MacNeil; sons Donnie and Jimmy (Jake) and a daughter in infancy, Joan Arlene; also by a sister Margaret and brothers John Angus, Dougall, Donald and John Dan.
The late Mrs. MacNeil will have visitation from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Monday (today) and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney, with Father Leo Boone officiating. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Sydney.

Alice Rose Marsh
81, Sydney Mines
Alice Rose Marsh, 81, of Miners’ Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines, formerly of Mill Creek, passed away Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at the Manor.
Born in Sydney Mines in 1918, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Theresa (Maddocks) Shinners. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or.
She is survived by her sons Garnet Jr. (Dean), Jackie (Sandra), Bras d’Or, Greg, Sydney, Austin (Sheila), Hopewell, Roy (Nancy), Dartmouth, Owen (Dorothy), Basil (Claire), Lorne (Jennie) and Ronnie (Bev), Ontario; her daughters Cora (Lawrence) Shebib, North Sydney, and Darlene (Corey) O’Handley, Boularderie. Also surviving are her brother Wilfred Shinners, Sydney; 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years Garnet Marsh; her infant son James; her sister Vivian Wall and her granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Shebib.
Visitation Tuesday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m., in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral Wednesday 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Regina McMullin
72, Reserve Mines
Regina McMullin 72, of Sydney Road, Reserve Mines, passed away peacefully at home, Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Mary Ann (Wadden) Mountain.
Predeceased by her husband, Thomas (Tucker) McMullin, Regina was an active member of St. Joseph’s Parish and CWL. She was the treasurer of the Reserve Twilight Club, past member of the ladies auxiliary Branch No. 2 Royal Canadian Legion, Reserve, and an avid 45s card player.
She is survived by daughters, Linda (Sheldon) McNeil, Glace Bay, Mary (Bobby) MacKillop, Reserve, Betty (Fred) Reeves, Hamilton, Ont., Bernadette (Andrew) Dolhai, Dominion; sons, Tom (Anita), New Waterford, Danny (Darlene), Calgary, Henry (Paula), Perth, Ont., Johnny (Karen), Reserve; 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Dollie Timm, Dominion, Antoinette Scott, Saint John, N.B., Cleo Fradkin, White Plains, N.Y., Faustina Woodford, Margaree, Carol Ann Chiasson, Glace Bay, and a brother Frank Mountain, Ottawa.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by sisters, Mary Cloake, Ave Allen, Bernadette Mountain and brother, Borromeo and three infant grandchildren.
Visitation was in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Saturday and Sunday. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, with Rev. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Levina (Vina) Nicholson
79, Halifax
Levina (Vina) Nicholson, formerly of Sydney, died at the Northwood Healthcare Center, Halifax, on Jan. 8, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late George Amos and Kate Ann Morrison Myers.
She is survived by a daughter Brenda Deagle, Dartmouth; a son Richard, Sydney; one sister Effie MacNeil, Glace Bay; seven grandchildren, Lisa, Shawna, Kelly and Scott Deagle, Nicole and Holly Nicholson and Kelsey Clyke; one great-granddaughter Jenna Potter-Deagle.
Predeceased by her husband Keneley Nicholson; sister Mary Wyld; brothers Charles, George, Angus, Duncan, Cyrus, Lloyd, Roy and Douglas.
Visitation will be held on Monday (today) 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be in the Chapel on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Rev. Dale Irving officiating. Burial at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
John Joseph Smith
81, Wagmatcook
John Joseph Smith, 81, Wagmatcook, Victoria Co., died Jan. 8, 2000 in Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late Louie and Margaret Jane (Paul) Smith. He was a labourer and a member of the Queen of the World Catholic Church, Wagmatcook. He was known to travel the 52 states of the U.S.A. and the 10 provinces of Canada during his younger days. In 1973, he settled in Wagmatcook, where he lived with his youngest grandson, Geoffrey T. Pierro for the past six years.
Surviving are daughters, Rubina Joy (Kevin) Augusta, South Carolina, Mary Catherine Pierro (Benedict), Wagmatcook; brother, James Smith, Waycobah; sister, Rosie Bernard, Waycobah; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Virginia Isadore; brothers, Samuel Smith and William Smith; sisters, Flora Clement, Christena Strout and Rubina Smith; grandchildren, Franklin and Dwayne Norton.
The body is resting at his residence, St. Humes Rear, West Loop, Wagmatcook, with visitation hours Monday, Jan. 10, after 3 p.m., all day Tuesday. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, in Queen of the World Catholic Church, Wagmatcook, Rev. R.D. Smith officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Carmel (Babs) Stokes
72, New Waterford
Carmel (Babs) McCarthy Stokes, 72, of Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Mary Ann (Corbett) McCarthy. Carmel was a member of St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan. She was once employed with both New Waterford hospitals.
She is survived by a step-son Wayne, in Boston; five sisters, Agatha Chesal, British Columbia, Shirley (Moe) Lauson, Rita (Pleman) Woodland, both of Scotchtown, Catherine Smith, New Waterford, and Yvonne (Wayne) Cooper, Glace Bay; two brothers Bernie (Marg), Florida, and Eddie (Eunice), New Waterford. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Harry Stokes and a sister Anne.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Stokes will be Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. on Wednesday in St. Michael’s Church with Fr. Lester Marchand officiating. Burial in St. Agnes Cemetery.
