John Lawrence Tobin
74, Barra Head
John Lawrence (Larry) Tobin, 74, Barra Head, Richmond Co., died Jan. 7, 2000, at his home after a lengthy illness.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John and Viola (Lamont) Tobin. He was a stonemason by trade. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Navy. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Barra Head.
Survived by his wife the former Carmel (MacIsaac) of Glace Bay; daughters Linda McKinnon, Jamaica, Deborah Tobin, Digby, Colleen MacLeod, Antigonish, Theresa Tobin, Halifax, Robin Pardy, Hantsport; sons Mark, Antigonish, Joseph, North Tryon, P.E.I., Lawrence, at home; sisters, Virginia Jobe, Glace Bay, Mary Shepherd, Calgary, Therese Kazera, Sydney; brothers Norbert, Vancouver, B.C., Theodore, Sydney; grandchildren Scott, Stuart, Tricia McKinnon, Lisa Pottie, Michael, Carole, Andrew MacLeod, Keane Tobin and Christine Pardy.
Predeceased by brothers George, Vincent, Edward (Ned); sisters, Henrietta, Dorothy and Rose.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A candlelight memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday from Immaculate Conception Church, Rev. Francis Cameron officiating. Burial at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to Mission to Seamen, Terminal Road, Halifax.

Marion Aubrey Weldon
71, Marion Bridge
Marion Audrey Weldon, 71, of 3878 Marion Bridge Highway died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Andrew J. and Mamie Lynk. She was at one time employed as a telephone operator in Glace Bay. Marion resided for 38 years in Hamilton, Ont., where she was employed as a telephone operator and later at Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital. She retired to Marion Bridge in 1987.
Marion is survived by her husband Robert Weldon; daughters Rhonda Ramsay, Toronto, Sharon Atha, Marion Bridge, Susan Weldon, at home; sons Guy, Hamilton, Andy, Saskatchewan, Jason, Sydney and six grandchildren Jessica, Jenna, Austin, Garrett, Meredith and Keir and a great-grandchild Hailey. Also surviving are sisters Greta (Mrs. Horace Feldman) and Elvira (Mrs. Naish Batten), both of Glace Bay; brothers Arthur (Chris), Glace Bay, Robert, Glace Bay and Aubrey (Dawn), Glace Bay.
Predeceased by a brother Aubrey.
Visitation was held Sunday, Jan. 9, from 7-9 p.m. and will be held Monday (today) after 2 p.m. and to leave Patten Funeral Home for service at 4 p.m. at Newsom United Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating.
Donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association or a charity of choice.
Margaret E. Couture
96, Sydney
Margaret Couture, 96, of 402 Cottage Rd., Sydney, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Marble Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Ann (MacLean) Morley.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by two daughters, Ann (Mrs. Joe Guillena) and Doris (Mrs. Joe MacQuinn), with whom she resided; two sons, Jim and Bill, all of Sydney; one sister, Annie (Mrs. Fred MacKinnon), Balls Creek; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford, son, John and a brother, Andrew in infancy.
The late Mrs. Couture will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Dan MacDonald. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Allister Currie
62, Reserve Mines
Allister James Currie, 62, of 31 Official Row, Reserve Mines, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Reserve Mines, he was a son of the late Malcolm and Margaret (Currie) Currie.
Allister was employed with the Devco Coal Division, where he worked until his retirement. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Reserve Mines.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; one daughter, Margaret (James) Graham, Glace Bay; three sons, Bruce (Cathy), Donnie (Karen), both of Reserve and Blaise, Virginia, U.S.A.; seven grandchildren, A.J., Jonathan, Colin, Danielle, Alicia, Dexter and Carter; two brothers, Leonard and Gerald; sisters, Nora McNamara, Thelma Mackie, Margie Treige and Patsy Roach and Donna Currie; also a sister-in-law, Theresa Currie.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Johnny, Neil and Joseph. Also predeceased by a child in infancy.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today (Tuesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church. Interment will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
Neil John Gillis
76, Margaree
Neil John Gillis, 76, a resident of Rachael’s Guest Home, Margaree, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp.
Born in Margaree Harbour, he was the son of the late Daniel and Catherine Ann (MacKinnon) Gillis.
He was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Margaree. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas with the Canadian Army. He was a retired member of the Margaree Volunteer Fire Department. He worked as a carpenter and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 32, Cheticamp.
He is survived by one brother, Ronald (Rose Marie) Gillis, Toronto; two sisters, Mary Ann (Mrs. Bill Walsh), Toronto and Theresa Digout, Belle Cote, Inverness County and by many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be offered Wednesday, 2 p.m. in St. Michael’s Church, Margaree with Fr. Martin MacDougall officiating. Burial in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Margaree.
Family flowers only, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cheticamp Funeral Services Ltd.
Teresa Marie Hogan
52, Scotchtown
Teresa Marie Hogan, 52, of Cashen Crescent, Scotchtown, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Gordon Murchison, Glace Bay and the late Maimie (Donovan) Murchison.
She was a member of St. Michael’s Church. For approximately 25 years, she was a resident of Grande Cache, Alta., where she was self-employed as a building superintendent. For the past two years, she was a resident of Scotchtown. She was active in the Lions Club and enjoyed babysitting her grandnephew Alex.
Surviving are her husband, Paddy Hogan; daughter, Tracy, Alberta and a son, Patrick, Alberta; four brothers, David (Lorraine), Billy (Anne Marie), both of Sydney, Kenny (Diane), Halifax and Donnie, Marion Bridge; two sisters, Donna (Ernie) Emond, New Brunswick and Gail (Charles) Collins, Sydney and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Larry and Allan and two sisters, Carol and Frances.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Memorial mass will be held Wednesday 2 p.m. at St. Michael’s Church. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of one’s choice.
