Margaret MacDonald
85, Glace Bay
Margaret MacDonald, age 85, of 46 Sterling Rd., Glace Bay and a former resident of New Victoria, passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Gardiner Mines, she was the daughter of the late Angus L. and Ester (Mackie) MacDonald.
She was a former member of St. Joseph’s Church, New Victoria and active in church affairs. Ms. MacDonald was employed with the New Waterford Co-op, Canada Manpower and Assessment Office, Sydney,
Surviving are sisters, Agnes (Sis) MacDonald, Florence Gillis (Joseph), brother, Francis (Phonse) MacDonald, all of Glace Bay.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, John L. Donald, Thomas MacDonald, Angus J. MacDonald, Daniel MacDonald and John Hugh (Buddy) MacDonald and sister, Mary Murphy.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay with Fr. John Graham officiating.
The family has asked that there be no flowers and would recommend any memorials be in the form of donations to a charity of choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay.
Gerard MacDougall
59, Sydney Mines
Gerard MacDougall, 59, of 8 Convent St., Sydney Mines, died suddenly at home, Monday, Jan. 10, 2000.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late James and Mary (MacKinnon) MacDougall.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines. For many years he was a self-employed bricklayer and carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Bernadette (O’Handley); his daughter, Rhonda, Toronto and his son, Robert, at home. Also surviving are his sisters, Moira (Mrs. John Denault) and Jeanne Marie (Mrs. William Ewing), Connecticut; sister-in-law, Anne Lynne MacDougall, North Sydney and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers, Bobby and Stanley and his stepmother, Evelyn (Jessome).
Visitation will be held Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral, Thursday, 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Timmy Garrity MacKinnon
48, New Waterford
Timmy Garrity MacKinnon, 48, of 3201 Mount Carmel Ave., New Waterford, died peacefully at home, on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, after a short illness.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of Margaret (MacDonald) MacKinnon, New Waterford, and the late Joseph (Buddy) MacKinnon.
He was a member of Mount Carmel Parish, a member of the Army and Navy, Branch 217; an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing darts at the Cavalier Tavern.
Surviving are four brothers, Freeman and Anthony (Jeanette), both of New Waterford; Dougie (Denise), Toronto, Johnny, Levack, Ont.; four sisters, Connie (Mrs. Ross MacLeod), Margaret (Mrs. Gaye Desveaux), New Waterford, Sharon, Levack, Ont., Christina (Mrs. Clifford Durdle), Etobicoke, Ont.; sadly missed by 14 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, David.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Wednesday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, 11:30 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery
W. Hazen Richards
83, Sydney
W. Hazen Richards of Castle Drive, Sydney, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Monday, Jan. 10, 2000.
Born in Saint John, N.B., Hazen was the son of the late William and Margaret Richards.
He was active in the Boy Scout Movement for many years and an elder at St. Andrews United Church. He was a sales representative with several national companies and an active member in the Cape Breton Trailer Club.
Hazen is survived by his wife, Isabel; and four sons, Ronald (Winnie), Sydney, Robert, Halifax, Alan (Barbara), Oromocto, N.B. and Ross (Tanya), Sydney Forks. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Richards, St. John, N.B.; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many cousins in Saint John, N.B.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel, Wednesday 11 a.m. with Rev. Dale Irving and Sharon Irving officiating. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of C.B. Regional Hospital or a charity of one’s choice.
Margaret Katherine Smith
86, Grand River
Margaret Katherine Smith, 86, of Grand River, passed away suddenly at her home, Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000.
Born at Grand River, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Cassie (Campbell) Smith.
She was a member of Grand River Presbyterian Church.
Margaret was predeceased by her sister, Christene and brothers, John and Harold.
Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Katherine (Douglas) Hart, Regina, Sask.; niece, Ann Allison, Wawota, Sask.; nephew, Bill (Catherine) Hart, Montreal, P.Q. Also surviving are two grandnieces, three grandnephews and three great-grandnieces.
Visitation will be in Grand River Presbyterian Church from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, where funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15 with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating.
Flowers most gratefully declined. Memorial donations may be made to Grand River Presbyterian Church.
Funeral is under the direction of the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.
Earl Henry Taker
Sydney
Earl Henry Taker of 160 Gray St., Sydney, passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Harbourview Hospital, Veteran’s Wing after a lengthy illness.
Born in Grosse Isle, Magdalen Islands, he was the son of Fred and Lillian (Keating) Taker.
A veteran of the Second World War, he served on the John W. MacKay, laying cable to England. A member of the Merchant Marines, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve in 1941 and retired as a petty officer.
Earl was employed with Eastern Light and Power and the Nova Scotia Power Corporation for 39 years, retiring in June of 1985. He was a member of the Naval Veterans Association.
Earl is survived by his wife, Edna (Ferguson); two daughters, Peggy (Robert Enns), Edmonton, Alta., Diane (Fred Lynk), Sydney; three sons, Blair, Kosovo, Greg (Carolyn), Halifax and Kenneth (Donna), Yellowknife, N.W.T.; three brothers, Bernard, Halifax, Jim and Ruben, both of Magdalen Islands; four sisters, Doreen Clarke, Magdalen Islands, Emily Stordy, P.E.I., Gladys Weaver, Yukon, Helen Wareham, B.C.; niece, Betty Ann; nephew, Allison and 10 grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Hanna, Jessie and Dora and two brothers, Arnold and Ross.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Thursday, 2 p.m. in Bethel Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Burial to follow at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
