Mary A. (Mayme) Bond
83, Sydney Mines
Mary A. (Mayme) Bond, 83, passed away peacefully at Northside General Hospital, Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000.
Formerly of Florence, she resided at Miner’s Memorial Guest Home, Sydney Mines.
Born in Sydney Mines, Mayme was the daughter of the late James and Agnes (Matthews) Carter. She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and a dedicated G. A. and Brownie leader. Mayme was employed for many years with the People Store in Sydney Mines.
She is survived by one brother, William (Goldie) Carter, Framingham, Mass. and sister-in-law, Joyce Dailey, Ontario. Mayme also had many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her dearly.
Predeceased by husband, Harold, brother, Albert and infant sister, Lydia.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Bond will be held today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Anglican Church with the Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating. Burial in Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Shore Road, Sydney Mines.
Donations may be made to Trinity Anglican Church Fund or a charity of choice.
Edmund Peter Durkacz
79, Whitney Pier
Edmund Peter Durkacz, 79, of 6 French St., Sydney, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at home.
Born at Whitney Pier, he was the eldest son of the late Peter and Frances (Tynski) Durkacz.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Polish Parish, Sydney and St. Michael Men’s Club and was active in Sydney’s local multicultural group over the years. Eddie joined the Cape Breton Highlanders in 1942 serving in Europe particularly Italy until the war ended. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Whitney Pier, Branch 128. Prior to his retirement, he worked at Canada Post for many years in the main office.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Bartkow; daughter, Michelle (Jim Thorne), Sackville; grandchildren, Amy and Jennifer; great-grandson, Alexander; stepdaughter, Natalie Dicks; stepgrandson, Scott Dicks (Cora Lee); brother, Stan, Hamilton, Ont.; sister, Wisia (Lloyd MacNeil), Sydney. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his first wife, the former Emmaline Sichky of New Waterford, three brothers, Kaz, Walter and Henry and one sister, Mary.
The late Mr. Durkacz will have visitation Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary’s Polish Church with the Rev. T. Rusnak officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Sheila Elaine Ford
60, Glace Bay
Shelia Elaine Ford, 60, 19 R Atlantic St., Glace Bay, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Thomas B. and Eileen (Arsenault) Simmons.
She was a member of Holy Cross Parish.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Ford; daughter, Lisa, Glace Bay; son, James, at home; three grandchildren, Tiffany, Danielle and Dylan; four brothers, George, Louisdale, Allie (Belle), Leo (Karen), both of Glace Bay; Leonard (Myrna), Port Hawkesbury; sister, Diane (Mrs. Bernard MacRury), Glace Bay.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Roy (Skin).
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today (Wednesday) 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay, Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. John Graham officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

John D. Johnstone
88, Leitches Creek
John Duncan Johnstone, 88, a resident of Leitches Creek, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Leitches Creek, he was a son of the late Norman and Dolena (MacLeod) Johnstone.
He worked as a farmer most of his life and in later years was caretaker at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. He was an Elder of St. Columba United Church, Leitches Creek. John was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are six sons, Freeman (Ellen), Forestburg, Alta., Aubrey, Lloydminster, Alta., Wayne, Carl, Lorne and Sheldon (Stacey), all of Leitches Creek; two daughters, Wilma (Mrs. John Voutier), Leitches Creek, Fern (Mrs. John Hetherington), Consort, Alta.; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was predeceased by his wife, Eliza (McEvoy), two sisters, Annie and Margaret, two brothers, Charles and Dan.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service Friday 2 p.m. at St. Columba United Church, Leitches Creek with the Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Columba United Church or to a charity of one’s choice.
Wilfred (Bill) John MacIsaac
80, Victoria Mines
Wilfred (Bill) John MacIsaac, 80, Victoria Mines, died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Jack and Alice (Bona) MacIsaac.
Bill worked in the heavy mills at Sydney Steel and retired in 1982. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128, in Whitney Pier and was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the 7th General Hospital and later as a bren gun instructor. He was a member of St. Alphonsus Parish.
Bill will be sadly missed and his memory cherished by his wife of 60 years, Eleanor (Conron), Glace Bay; his two sons, Ronald (Diane), South Bar and Gerald, Marion Bridge; his five daughters, Arlene Maclsaac and Vonnie Maclsaac, both of Sydney, Lorena “Lori” (Mrs. Paul MacLean), South Bar, Donnine (Mrs. Andre St. Pierre), Dartmouth and Hattie (Barry Bennett), St. Anthony, Nfld.; his 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Bill is also survived by three sisters, Mary (Hemmings) and Lexie (Menchefsky), both of Sydney and Cecelia (Leslie), South Bar.
Predeceased by his brothers, Jimmy, Joey and Mickey and his sisters, Mabel and Cassie.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Alphonsus Church, Friday 10 a.m. with Rev. Everett McDow officiating.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Jessie Mildred (Beaton) MacRury
95, Bras d'Or
Jessie Mildred (Beaton) MacRury, 95, of Bras d’Or, formerly of Sydney, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Angus and Isabel (Wilson) Beaton.
She was a teacher up until her retirement in 1972 and also a member of the Sydney Pentecostal Church.
She is survived by one son, Donald (Beulah), Sydney; one grandson, Jamie, Burin, Nfld.; two granddaughters, Shawna (Mrs. Alex Barter), Deerlake, Nfld., Sharon, Marion Bridge and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, James, three sisters, Murial Catherine, Norma and Murial Agnes, one brother, Robert and one grandchild, Donna.
Visitation will take place today (Wednesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the First United Church, Main Street, Louisbourg. Funeral service will be held Thursday, 2 p.m. from the First United Church with the Rev. Clayton Austin and the Rev. Terance Carew officiating. Interment in Willow Grove Cemetery, Louisbourg.
