Meaghan Victoria Murphy
14 months, Sydney Mines
Meaghan Victoria Murphy, 14-month-old daughter of Greg and Debbie (Shaw) Murphy, Moncton, formerly of Sydney Mines, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a lengthy illness.
Meaghan is survived by her twin sister, Erin Kathleen; her maternal grandparents, Roddie and Letha Shaw, Sydney Mines; her paternal grandparents, Greg and Florence Murphy, Sydney Mines; uncles, Tony Shaw, Sydney Mines, Rick (Kath) Shaw, B.C., Chris (Carol Ann) Shaw, Sydney Mines, Adam Shaw, B.C., Eugene (Debbie) Murphy, North Sydney, Sean (Joanne) Murphy, Halifax, Shawn Donovan, Sydney, Glenn (Sheila) Christie, Halifax; aunts, Letha Shaw (John), Halifax and Marilyn (Donnie) Roberts, Yarmouth.
The number of lives that Meaghan touched greatly outnumbered the days she was with us. We feel deeply blessed to have had Meaghan. She was a gift from God. May songs of the angels welcome you and guide you along the way.
Visitation will take place Thursday evening 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.

Wilfred J. Nolan
64, Halifax
Wilfred J. Nolan, 64, of Halifax, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, with his family at the QEII Infirmary site.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Joseph and Muriel (Scott) Nolan.
He was very active with the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Windsor Park Men’s Association and a member of the Halifax Rifles.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; three sons, Larry (Peggy), Jeffrey (Jane), Michael, all of Halifax; sister, Jean Dragatis, Fredericton and stepmother, Florence Nolan, Glace Bay; five grandchildren, Ryan, Jimmy, Jenna, Jeremy, Nikki and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. Family will receive friends and relatives Thursday, Jan. 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. where the funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Janet Blois officiating. Interment at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of choice.
Louis Roach
68, New Waterford/Toronto
Louis Roach, 68, of Toronto, died suddenly on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Victor and Mary Ann (Cormier) Roach.
Survived by one brother, Charles (Irene), New Waterford and a sister, Theresa (Joe) Cormier, Sydney.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, June Gerrior, brother, Fred and a sister, Rose Agnes.
Funeral service and cremation took place in Toronto. A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14.
Mary Margaret Thurbide
89, Sydney Mines
Mary Margaret Thurbide, 89, of 7 Duke St., Sydney Mines, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mathilda (Gillis) Getto.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or and a member of the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club.
Surviving are sons, Joseph (Anne Marie), Anthony, Brian, Lawrence (Moira), all of Sydney Mines, Steven (Audrey), Bras d’Or, Donald (Bev), Cole Harbour, Kevin, Millville and Alex, Red Lake, Ont.; daughters, Agnes (Wilford) Duplessie, Saint John, N.B., Barbra (Anthony) Degiobbi, South Haven, Bernice, Red Lake, Ont., Carlie, Sydney Mines and Linda (Warren) Gillis, Millville. She is also survived by her sisters, Georgina MacDonald, Hermine Getto, Sarah Wellner, Sylvia Medjuck, all of New Waterford, Mathilda Blovin, Montreal; brother, Carl, New Waterford; 36 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, sisters, Catherine, Rosie, Leonie, son, Benjamin and six children in infancy.
Visitation today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral Thursday, 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with the Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of her son, Benjamin.
Mary Brown Dunham
82, Glace Bay
Mary Brown Dunham, 82, of 7 George St., Glace Bay, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Daniel John and Catherine (Farquharson) Williams. Mary was a member of Glace Bay United Baptist Church, and a member of the choir for 60 years, Dominion Life member of the Missionary Society of the Baptist Church, the Ladies Guild and the Hospital Auxiliary. Mary was Noble Grand and Past Nobel Grand of the Jubilee Rebekah Lodge No. 14.
Mary and her late husband Ralph were co-owners and operators of M and R Dairy, Glace Bay.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Catherine, home, Margaret (Kevin) Edwards, Glace Bay; son, Ralph, Edmonton, Alta.; sisters, Mrs. Edith Crawford, Toronto, Ont., Margaret Williams, Sydney; brother, Charles Williams, Sydney; two grandchildren, Christopher and Nicole.
Predeceased by her husband, Ralph and a sister, Catherine Horton.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000 from 7-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Highway.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Canadian Institute for the Blind, Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The Rebekah will meet at the funeral home at 8 p.m. for service.
George Garfield (Gar) Ellsworth
58, New York
George Garfield (Gar) Ellsworth, 58, of 215 Paul’s Way, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, in the Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca, N.Y.
He was born in New Waterford, N.S., the son of the late Leo and Annie (Campbell) Ellsworth.
Garfield was employed by the Ithaca Housing Authority for 25 years, retiring in September of 1996. He was a friend of Bill’s since July of 1991. Garfield was a member of the Varna United Methodist Church, The Eagles Club and had been an avid bowler and former member of the American Bowling Congress.
Garfield is survived by his wife, Kathleen MacPherson Ellsworth, Ithaca; his daughter, Barbie (Rob) Denger, Nazareth, Pa.; his grandchildren, Jeff, Amanda and Dustin; and his stepchildren, Sarah and Brian Padgett. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Ellsworth and his sister, Tish (Peter) Austin-Smith, all of Nova Scotia; nieces, nephews, in-laws and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his sister, Anne Beverly Petrash and an infant sister, Frances.
Funeral services were celebrated by Rev. Carolyn Byrnes, Friday, Jan. 7 at the Varna United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours were held at the Bangs Funeral Home on Thursday evening.
