Helen F. McLean of Regent Street, North Sydney, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, from St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial of ashes to follow at Lakeside Cemetery.
Doris Urquhart
99, North Sydney
Doris Urquhart, 99, a resident of View Street, North Sydney, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in England, she was a daughter of the late John and Isabel (Smith) Pilkington.
She was the owner and operator of Pilkington’s Dry Good Store in North Sydney for many years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church and of the North Sydney Garden Club.
Surviving are a son, David Urquhart; nephew, John (wife Pat) Allan, Cambridge Narrows, N.B.; two great-nieces, Carol Ann Roberts, Saint John, N.B. and Heather Murdock, Rothesay, N.B.; two great-nephews, David Allan, Codys, N.B. and John Allan, Calgary, Alta.
She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas Urquhart, two sisters, Elsie Moore and Florence Allan.
Family visitation will be held in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial to take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Thomas (Tom) Abbott
86, Sydney Mines
Thomas (Tom) Abbott, 86, of Sydney Mines, formerly of 5 Brighton Ave., Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Giddeon and Alice (Brushett) Abbott.
He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing and most sports. Tom was employed with Devco Coal Co. in December 1941 retiring in May 1969.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, Miners Manor, Sydney Mines; five nieces, Shirley (Mrs. Henry Ford), Yvonne White (Reg), Lillian McGean (Eddy), Mrs. Betty Mauger, Alice (Mrs. Freddy Russell); four nephews, Keith MacDonald, Johnny MacDonald (Patsy), Wayne MacDonald (Corrine), Bruce MacDonald.
Predeceased by sisters, Lillian MacDonald, Mary Abbott and brother, William Abbott.
Visitation will take place Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral service will be held Monday, 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church with the Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Memorial Fund of Trinity Anglican Church.
Mary Brewer
Saco, Maine
Word was received by the family of Mary Brewer, who was a resident of Saco, Me. She was taken to the Southern Maine Medical Center in Beddleford, Me. when she passed away.
Mary was a former manager of the Cascade Inn for many years.
Mary is survived by two granddaughters in Texas and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Brewer and her only daughter, Beverly Joan in July of 1999 and a brother, Ewen in 1981.
She was the daughter of the late Dougald and Elizabeth Campbell.
Surviving are her sisters, Janie Crowley and Betty, Ashland, Mass., Olga Wilcox, New Waterford and Theresa Westhaven, Halifax; brothers, John Alex, Hartigan and Dougie Campbell, New Waterford.
She was laid to rest by her husband Donald in Rockland, Me. on Jan. 13, 2000.
Duncan John (DJ) Buchanan
72, Sydney
Duncan John (DJ) Buchanan, 72, Lingan Road, Sydney, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Grand Anse, he was a son of the late Duncan and Florence (MacIntosh) Buchanan.
He was employed as a truck driver with Irving Oil for 38 years until his retirement in 1992.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, the former Alice Penny; one daughter, Rose Marie (Eric) Fudge, Sydney; two sons, Andrew Duncan (Cathy), Arne Cortland (Kerra), both of Halifax; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Rita Fudge, Sydney; three sisters, Jean (Mrs. Norman Adams), Coxheath, Rita (Mrs. Arne Pedersen), Nanaimo, Louise (Mrs. Cortland Shaw), Tacoma, Wash.
Predeceased by two brothers, Robert Buchanan, John MacKenzie, sister, Anna MacEachern.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel Monday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Murdock D. (Buddy) Campbell
74, Islandview
Murdock Dan Campbell, 74, of Islandview, formerly of 437 St. Peter’s Road, Sydney, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, after a brief illness at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Peter and Margaret (MacIsaac) Campbell. Buddy was an avid hunter, fisherman and swimmer. He was employed at the Mechanical Department of Sydney Steel Corp. for over 40 years retiring in 1982. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews including niece, Judy (Bernie) MacPhee, with whom he resided in Islandview, and his special grandniece, Melissa.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Christine Nicholson and Elizabeth (Betty) Campbell, three nephews, John Murdock Campbell, Ronald Nicholson and by infant Harold Nicholson.
The late Mr. Campbell will have no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Lennard Weldon Hussey
46, Neil's Harbour
Lennard Weldon Hussey, 46, of Neil’s Harbour, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at the QEII Health Complex Infirmary.
He was also predeceased by an infant nephew Jerome Leonard Murphy of Dartmouth.
Stewart D.S. Vair
North Sydney
Stewart Douglas Strickland Vair, a resident of 98 Queen St. North Sydney, died Thursday Dec. 30, 1999 at the Northside General Hospital.
He was born in Halifax, the son of the late J. Douglas Vair and Claire S. (Strickland) Vair. During World War II he served with the Royal Canadian Navy at sea in Nfld., retiring with the rank of Lieut. Commander.
He was a member of the Vaughan Royal Commission on Pensions, and a member of the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union and was active on their Pension Committee. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #19 North Sydney.
He is survived by his sister Mrs. Margaret McLellan, Middle Musquodoboit; nephew Dr. Brock Vair, Halifax; niece Mrs. Cathy Gardner, Cold Lake, Alta.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife Lettie (Munro) Vair, R.N. and brother Dr. Donald Vair.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Monday, Jan. 3rd at 2 p.m. from St. Matthew Wesley United Church North Sydney with Rev. David Luker officiating. Interment of ashes will take place in the United Church Cemetery in Margaree Centre at a later date.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations can be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church or to a charity of choice.
