Alexander (A.J.) MacKay
49, Glace Bay
Alexander (A.J.) MacKay, 49, of 130 Alexander Street, Glace Bay, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a short illness.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Neil J. and Rose (Donnelly) MacKay.
Alex had been employed as a process operator with Atomic Energy, Heavy Water Plant, Glace Bay, after that he worked for a period of time in Algeria with the Pullman/Kellogg Company. Upon his return he took up a teaching position at the Adult Vocational Training Center.
He is survived by his wife, the former Colleen Ward, brother, David (Linda), niece, Rose Lynette, nephew, Blair, all of Glace Bay; uncle, Rev. Robert Donnelly, Tracadie; also two aunts, Marguerite Gillis and Sadie MacKay.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home Ltd. today (Saturday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Sunday, 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Church with Rev. John Graham officiating. Cremation to follow.
Donations in Alex’s memory made be made to the Glace Bay Food Bank.
Archie MacLean
90, Glace Bay
Donald Archie MacLean, 90, longtime resident of Forest Street, Glace Bay, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Taigh Na Mara, where he had resided the past number of weeks.
Born in Donkin, he was a son of the late Angus and Jennett (Scott) MacLean. Archie was employed for 50 years as a coal miner retiring in 1973.
A veteran of the Second World War, he served with the Royal Canadian Artillery in Europe and was a member of John Bernard Croak VC, Glace Bay Branch 3 of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a charter member of the Newsom United Church, Glace Bay; a Life Elder of the congregation; and a former member of the Committee of Stewards and the Committee of Trustees.
He is survived by his wife, the former Martha Howie; daughters, Marilyn (Mrs. Jim MacPhee), Eastern Passage and Jennett, Sydney; son, Brian (Betty), Sarnia, Ont.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, Stan and Jim, both of Glace Bay and Fraser, Donkin.
He was predeceased by a brother, Willie and a sister, Agnes Milley.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000 at 2 p.m. in Newsom United Church with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Family will receive friends at a time of fellowship following the service. Private committal will be held at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
It is suggested that donations to a favourite charity be made as memorials.
Agnes Penny
72, Sydney Mines
Agnes Penny, 72, of Sydney Mines, passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Edith (Wareham) Forrest.
She is survived by three sisters, Della McCracken, New Brunswick, Betty Groves and Linda Bradley, both of Sydney Mines; three brothers, David (Florence), Edward (Kay) and Charles (Judy), all of Sydney Mines; one granddaughter, Tracy MacKay and two great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Rebecca.
Predeceased by her husband, John Charles Penny, son, John Penny, two grandsons, John Charles Penny and Edward Michael Penny, brothers, Willis, George, Peter and Alexander, two sisters, Edith and Mary.
The late Mrs. Penny will have no visitation. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ian MacLeod officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations my be made to a charity of choice.
Thomas A. Pratt
68, Sydney
Thomas A. Pratt, 86, formerly of 55 Windsor St., Sydney, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney.
Born in Dominion, he was a son of the late Thomas and Cecilia Pratt.
Tom was a veteran of the Second World War. He worked as a carpenter and was a life time member of the carpenter’s union local 1588.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Ferguson, Sydney; sons, Tommy, Phil (Debbie), Sydney, Robert (Veronica), Toronto, Donnie (Joyce), Sydney, Bruce (Adelene), Port Hawkesbury, Doug (Brenda), Sydney; daughter, Judy (John) Baker, Sydney; 26 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Tom was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Ann (Ferguson), sister, Nellie Ross, brother, Phillip, two sons, Alexander and Allan, two daughters, Peggy and Emily.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Saturday and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Monday, 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dale Irving officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Doris Urquhart
99, North Sydney
Doris Urquhart, 99, a resident of View Street, North Sydney, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in England, she was a daughter of the late John and Isabel (Smith) Pilkington.
She was the owner and operator of Pilkington’s Dry Good Store in North Sydney for many years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church and of the North Sydney Garden Club.
Surviving are a son, David Urquhart and his wife Joyce (MacLennan), Sydney; granddaughter Heather Anne Urquhart, Sydney; nephew, John (wife Pat) Allan, Cambridge Narrows, N.B.; two grand-nieces, Carol Ann Roberts, Saint John, N.B. and Heather Murdock, Rothesay, N.B.; two grand-nephews, David Allan, Codys, N.B. and John Allan, Calgary, Alta.
She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas Urquhart, two sisters, Elsie Moore and Florence Allan.
Family visitation will be held in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial to take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Martin Francis Acker
82, Glace Bay
Martin Francis Acker, 82, of Seaview Manor, South St., Glace Bay, and formerly of 84 Brookland St., Glace Bay, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000 at the Manor.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Herman Angus and Genona (Tracey) Acker. Martin grew up in Glendale and owned and trained horses. He was involved in the harness racing game for many years.
He is survived by sons Herman, Glace Bay, and Eugene, Toronto; daughters Betty (Jabez) Durnford, Toronto, Frances (Ronald) MacNeil, Mississauga, Sylvia (Leo) Jessome, Glace Bay, Judy (Carlos) Santos, Cambridge, Ont. Viola (Tony), Toronto, and Jennifer (Gerald) Brake, St. David’s, Nfld.; step-son Ron Hiscock, Millville, Nfld.; sister Margaret MacPherson, Dominion. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Jessie and sisters Mary, Tina and Florence.
Visitation was in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Sunday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be today (Monday) at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. John Graham officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary of the Angel’s Cemetery, Glendale, C.B.
