Lucy Maude Bonner
92, North Sydney
Lucy Maude Bonner, 92, of Lorne St., North Sydney, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Ramea, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late William and Suzanna (Warren) Kendall. She was a member of St. John The Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
Surviving are five daughters, Thelma (Mrs. Gerald Bobbitt) of Fredericton, N.B., Frances Thompson of Belleville, Ont., Helen Nicholson of Toronto, Ont., Joan (Mrs. Al Putnam) of Truro, N.S., and Marion Delaney of North Sydney; two sons Leonard (Violet) of Sydney Mines and Cecil (Helen) of Sydney Mines; 46 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Leonard; two sons Alphonse (Toddy) and Harrison; one daughter Edna Wall; four great-grandchildren; one grandchild; four brothers Austin, Emmanuel, Jack and William and four sisters Frances, Rita, Edna and Alice.
Visitation will be held Tuesday Jan. 18, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Bernice Rhoda Boone
79, Westmount
Bernice Rhoda Boone, 79, of Westmount Road, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Bernice was born in North Sydney, a daughter of the late William and Charlotte (Cave) Rolls. Bernice was a member of Westmount United Church, officer and longtime member of Order of Eastern Star and Past matron of Munroe Chapter No. 26, North Sydney.
Bernice is survived by her husband Allan; daughter Janet Arlene (Peter) Tuff, Truro; three grandchildren Philip, Andrea and Martha; two sisters Hilda Williams, Fort McMurray and Zelma Hamilton, Vancouver, B.C. a brother Elmer, Vancouver, B.C.
She was predeceased by a brother Judson.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service at Westmount United Church Tuesday 2 p.m. with Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Order of Eastern Star service will be held Monday 7 p.m. at the chapel.
Memorials may be made to Order of Eastern Star Healing Garden at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Dorothy (Nichols) Brophy
68, Sydney
Mrs. Dorothy (Dot) (Nichols) Brophy, 68, of Lingan Road, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Dorothy was born in Sydney, a daughter of the late George and Wilhelmina (French) Nichols. She was a member of St. Alban’s Anglican Parish. She was a former employee of the cleaning staff of Cabot House.
She is survived by her husband Douglas J. Brophy; two daughters Cindy (Kenny) Miller, Sydney and Shelley (Barry) MacAulay, Dutch Brook; five sons Doug (Linda), Niagara Falls, Gary (Jane), Sydney, Glenn (Barbara) and Robert (Joanne), Brampton, Ont. and Gregory at home; grandchildren Melony, Bradley, Joseph, Michelle Brophy, Kelly Miller, Chad, Matthew Sullivan and Millie MacAulay; step-grandchildren Colin, Michael and Kimberley. Also surviving are six sisters Sue Gushue, Edna Dobson, Babe (James) Hallohan, all of Sydney, Nellie (Garnet) Ellis and Catherine Bailey of Etobicoke, Ont. and Elizabeth (Thomas) Creber, Ont.; three brothers Charles, Gerry, Walter, all of Sydney.
She was predeceased by two grandchildren Clayton and Christopher; two sisters Viola Smith and Hazel and one brother Wesley.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in St. Alban’s Anglican Church Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Doug Chard officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
Harvey Allan Hodder
77, Sydney
Harvey Allan Hodder, 77 of Royal Ave., Sydney, died peacefully after a short illness at the Victoria General ICU, Halifax.
Born in Sydney, he was the eldest child of the late Walter and Etta (Libbey) Hodder. He was a former employee of the Sydney Steel Corporation. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and was a member of the Naval Veteran Association. He was also a member of First United Church.
He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (Rudy); son Keith and sister Verna Hopkins.
He is survived by three daughters Paula (Don) Orazietti, Sault Ste. Marie, Corinne (Peter) Malloy, Halifax and Laura (Brian) Magennis, Halifax. Also survived by sister-in-law Mary Robertson and sister Vivian Bauer; five grandsons David, Paul and Anthony Orazietti, Andrew Malloy and Liam Magennis and three granddaughters Katie Orazietti, Alanna Hodder and Kirsten Malloy and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will take place at First United Church Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Veterans Comfort Fund and First United Church.
Georda Louise Vien MacDonald
85, Sydney
Georda Louis Vien MacDonald, 85, Charlotte Street, Sydney, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000.
Born in Sydney, N.S., Georda was a daughter of the late Col. George Piercey DSO and the late Georgia (Smith) Piercey. She was retired from Normaway Handcrafts. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, the Luther Young Group, the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides of Canada and the Weaver’s Guild of Philadelphia. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Georda is survived by one daughter Mary Jane (Janey) MacDonald, at home; one son John Piercey (J.P.) daughter-in-law (Lynn), Sydney River; three grandchildren Jonathan, Jessica and Emily.
She was predeceased by her husband Capt. John J. MacDonald and one daughter Julie MacDonald Kirkpatrick.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Raymond T. Peach
72, Port Morien
Raymond Thomas Peach, 72, Black Brook, Port Morien, went to be with the Lord peacefully at home, surrounded by family Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000.
Born Jan. 8, 1928, at Black Brook, Port Morien, he was the youngest son of the late Absalom and Lillian (Shepard) Peach. Raymond was a former employee of the Sydney and Louisbourg Railway and Nova Scotia Power until his retirement in 1986. Raymond had a deep love for his Saviour and this was reflected in his on going ministry. Music was also a love of Raymond’s and he was active for many years in choirs and Barbershop Quartet Singing.
He is survived by his wife, the former Gloria Fleming; son Paul (Eliza), grandsons Dennis and Brian, Salmon Arm, B.C.; two daughters Carolyn (Douglas) Brown, grandsons Nathan and Matthew, Ithaca, N.Y., and Lillian (Wade) Aalders, granddaughter Samantha and grandson Allister, Beaverbank, N.S.; daughter-in-law Roberta Peach, grandson Erik, Calgary, Alberta; step-son Daniel MacDougall; grandson Daniel, Sydney, N.S., a brother Byron (Winnifred), South Port Morien.
He was predeceased by his first wife Helen Cochrone; a son Allister; two brothers Franklin and Edgar; three sisters Marion Dillon, Pearl and Beulah in childhood.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Allan MacLellan, a dear friend officiating. Interment at Homeville Baptist Cemetery.
Family will receive friends at a time of fellowship following interment at the Peach Homestead, Black Brook, Port Morien.
