Christina E. Mann
87, North Sydney
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Christina E. Mann, 87, a resident of the Northside Community Guest Home, North Sydney, formerly of 10 Jessome St., Sydney Mines, Monday, Jan. 17, 2000.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late James and Christina (Erskine) Robertson.
She was employed for many years with Stedman’s Department Store, North Sydney.
She is survived by sons, Jack (Melvena) and Michael (Bernadette); daughters, Linda (Bill) Tanner and Lois (Bob) Walker; sister, Ivey Maxwell; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband John, daughter, Lois in infancy, brothers, Barclay, Bob, Jim, Bill (Bucky) and Albert and sister, Margaret (Maggie) Bonnar.
Visitation today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral Wednesday, 3 p.m. in Carman United Church with the Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation; Carman United Church Building Fund or any charity.
Lisa Marlene Curry
33, Glace Bay
Lisa Marlene Curry, 33, of 4 Willowdale Dr., Glace Bay, passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Havre Boucher as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of Fabian and Jessie (Bonnell) Curry.
Lisa was an employee of Sobeys Grocery Store for 14 years. She was a graduate of St. Michael’s High School, Glace Bay. She was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Lisa was an avid Montreal Canadiens and Screaming Eagles fan. She also enjoyed arts and crafts. She had an excellent sense of humour and was a very caring lady. Lisa was always willing to give to others.
Besides her parents, she is survived by one brother, Calvin, Guelph; two sisters, Angie and Debbie, both of Guelph.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
As expression of sympathy for Lisa donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Gladys King
76, Sydney
Gladys King, 77, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, formerly of Bridgeport, passed away on Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at the residence.
Born at Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late George and Janie (Collins) MacLeod.
Gladys lived many years with her husband Bill in the Toronto area retiring to Cape Breton a year ago. She and her husband were avid travellers who loved to camp and fish.
She is survived by her husband, William and a brother, George MacLeod, Westmount.
Predeceased by her sister, Winnie.
The late Mrs. King will have no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Ltd.
John Charles Latwaitis
75, Sydney Mines
John Charles Latwaitis, 75, of Richard Street, Sydney Mines, died at his home on Monday, Jan. 17, 2000.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Alice and William Latwaitis.
He served in the Royal Canadian Army during the Second World War. He was an avid sportsman and loved playing cards with his friends. He worked in the coal mines for 53 years.
He was predeceased by his brothers, George, William and sisters, Isabel, Evelyn.
He is survived by his wife, Doreen, son, David and daughters, Patricia (Steve) Gillis and Linda (Rob) Davies; five brothers, James, La Salle, Ont., Anthony, Florence and Bruno, Joseph and Greg, all of Sydney Mines; five sisters, Helen Burgarella, Sudsbury, Mass., Camillus Graves, Port Aueheme, Calif., Teresa Mallette, Windsor, Ont., Vivian Hurash, Westhill, Ont. and Yvonne Gardiner, Sydney Mines. Also surviving are two grandsons, Scott and Michael Gillis and one granddaughter Bhreagh Davies.
At the request of the family, there will be no visitation.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Church, Main Street, Sydney Mines, Thursday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. with Fr. Tony MacDonald officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Miners Memorial Manor.

Joseph John LeForte
86, Glace Bay
Joseph John LeForte, 86, of 17 Smith St., Glace Bay, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex, after a brief illness.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late John and Louise (Detcheverry) LeForte.
Joe served with the Canadian Army as a “Gunner” from 1940 until his discharge in 1945. In his early years after his discharge from the army Joe became self-employed and ran LeForte’s Taxi at the corner of McKeen and Main streets. Later he operated a service station until he started his own construction company as a general contractor.
He is survived by his wife, the former Norma Johnston; one son, Joseph Jr., at home; three daughters, Joanne (Mrs. Bill MacAulay), Kitchener, Ont., Karen (Mrs. Arthur Aucoin), Dominion and Donna (Mrs. Gary Miller), Glace Bay; also four brothers, John Sr., Paul, Charles and Frank, all of Glace Bay; three sisters, Alice, Teresa, both of Glace Bay and Marguerite, Saint John, N.B.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, George, Edward, Angus, Ronald and a sister, Louise.
Funeral services for the late Mr. LeForte will be held Thursday, 3 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday from 1 p.m. till time of service. Interment will follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Mary Claire Leonard
72, Sydney
Mary Claire Leonard, 72, of Sydney, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax.
Born in Antigonish, she was the youngest child of the late John A. and Mary (MacNeil) MacDonald of Mulgrave.
She was employed at the U.S. Air Force Base at Goose Bay, Labrador in the 1950s. She then moved to Elmhurst, N.Y., where she worked as a secretary for close to 30 years. She moved to Sydney two years ago where she resided at Cabot House.
She is survived by her brother, Rev. Raymond MacDonald, Heatherton.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald and a brother, Herman.
Visitation Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish. Funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Heatherton, with Rev. Raymond G. MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation.
