Ronald J. McGrady

Ronald McGrady, 28, Brampton, Ont. formerly of Sydney, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in Brampton, Ont.
Born in Toronto, he was the son of Mrs. Winnie (Peckham) McGrady and the late James J. McGrady.
Ronald attended Sydney Academy in the late 1980s.
He is survived by his mother, Winnie McGrady; two sisters, Tina (Steve) MacKinnon, Sydney, Tanya McGrady, Toronto and long time companion, Ms. Terry Applin. He is also survived by half-sister, Catherine, and three half-brothers, James John, Sean and Terry, all of London, Ont.; maternal grandfather, Anderson Peckham, Toronto, nieces and nephews.
Ronald was predeceased by twin brother, Robert, father, James; grandparents, James and Chris McGrady and nephew, Alex.
There will be a memorial mass held at St. Theresa’s Church Friday, Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery following mass.
Rachael E. Smith
72, North Sydney
Rachael Elizabeth Smith, 72, a resident of Wall Street, North Sydney, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late William and Mary (Bradbury) Collins.
She was employed for a number of years at the Blue and White Restaurant and later Wong’s Restaurant, North Sydney. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary (Mrs. David Musgrave), Ball’s Creek; two sons, Roy (Vie) Smith, Bras d’Or and Dave (Josepha) Lawley, North Sydney; grandchildren, David, Amanda, Michael, Joanna, Roy, Michael, Trevor and Darcy; one sister, Eva Hatcher, Regina; one brother, Norman (Viola) Collins, Lethbridge, Alta.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Smith, one son, Joseph, stepfather, James Lawley, one sister, Dorothy McKee and one brother, Roy Collins, who lost his life during the Second World War.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass Thursday, 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with the Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.

Dr. John (J.R.) Wallace
67, Sydney
Dr. John (J.R.) Wallace, 67, of Sydney, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in West Virginia, he was a son of Mrs. Leah Wallace, Florida and the late John Wallace.
He worked most recently as an oral surgeon at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Dr. Wallace formerly served as a colonel with the U.S. Army, working as an oral surgeon. He served in the Vietnam War.
Surviving are his wife, the former Simonne (Richard) Wallace; his children, all residing in the U.S. He is survived by his stepchildren and grandchildren, residing in Sydney and the United States and also by two sisters.
The late Mr. Wallace will have no visitation. Funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Friday at 2 p.m. with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney, under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Ltd.
Donations may be made to the CBRH Palliative Care/Oncology Dept. or to a charity of choice.
Florence Hope Warden
79, West Palm Beach, Fla.
Florence Hope Warden passed away suddenly Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, in West Palm Beach, Fla.
She was born in Alder Point, and was the daughter of the late Jenny MacDonald and Robert Cann.
Surviving are her daughter, Faith (Richard Lord); sons, Robert (Linda), Charles (Diane) and David, all in Massachusetts. Also surviving is a sister, Ruby Sarty, Maine; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; the Pearo family and cousins in Alder Point.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held this week in Marlboro, Mass.
Agnes (Aggie) Burke
78, New Waterford
Agnes (Aggie) Burke, 78, of 2861 Roaches Rd., New Waterford, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Durner) Bresowar.
She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford; New Waterford Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and the Mount Carmel CWL.
She is survived by one daughter, Sandra (Mrs. Warren Jackson), Middleton, N.S.; two sons, Terry (Patsy), New Waterford and Larry (Doreen), Sydney; a sister, Margie MacNeil, New Waterford; six grandchildren, Nancy, Susan, David, Michael, Alain and Rochelle.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Thomas (Jack) Burke, sister, Tillie and a brother, John.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Burke will be held at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, this evening (Thursday) 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral mass will be held 9 a.m. Saturday from Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating.
Burial in the parish cemetery.
Douglas Charles Burton
Coxheath
Douglas Charles Burton, Coxheath, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000.
Born in Margaree Valley, Inverness County, Douglas was a son of the late John A. and Catherine (Crowdis) Burton.
He was a retired carpenter and contractor. Douglas was a Past Master of East Gate Lodge No. 127, Westmount; Past District Grand Chaplain, Cape Breton Center District and a member of the Cape Breton Lodge of Perfection, Keith Sovereign Rose Croix and the Nova Scotia Consistory. He was a member of Philae Temple A.A.O.N.M.S.
Douglas is survived by his wife, Dora (LeRossignol); two sons, Paul, at home, and John, daughter-in-law Gabriella, Ottawa; two granddaughters, Meredith and Holly; one great-grandson, Robert; brother, Charles, Margaree and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy and three brothers, Roger, Frank and Clarence.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A Masonic service will be held in the chapel Saturday, Jan. 22, at 1:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
