John Archibald (Buck) MacDonald
87, Sydney
Johnnie (Buck) MacDonald, 87, of 388 Columbia St., Sydney, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Daniel R. and Jessie (Ferguson) MacDonald.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was employed with Sydney Steel in the wire and nail mill for 42 years. He was an avid bowler and bingo player. He served in the Royal Canadian Army during the Second World War. He was a noted softball and soccer player in the 1930s.
He is survived by his wife, Minnie (Hogan) MacDonald; three sons, John R. (Jackie Oram), Wayne (Lorraine Surrette), Granville Centre, Annapolis County and Alex (Judy Thomey), Sydney. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Ian and Ronnie, Ottawa, Chad, Vancouver, John Arthur, Granville Centre, Robert and Amber, Sydney; five stepchildren, Lynn Hudson, Savannah, Georgia, Karen (Scott Boyd), Halifax, Cindy Latham, Sydney, Kelly (Brad MacLellan), Sydney and a stepson, Joseph (Joe), Halifax. He is also survived by seven step-grandchildren, Brittany, Georgia, Derreck, Daniel and Lindsay, Sydney, Taylor, Sydney and Heather MacDonald, Inverness.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Marion (Barrington) MacDonald, a sister, Nan and his brothers, Rannie and Alex.
The late Mr. MacDonald will have no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held from St. Theresa’s Church, Saturday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. with Fr. A. MacDougall officiating. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. A reception will follow at St. Theresa’s Parish Centre.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
John Stephen (Stevie) MacDonald
48, Glace Bay
John Stephen (Stevie) MacDonald, 48, of 72-7th St., Glace Bay, passed away suddenly Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the former Annie Melnick and the late Shunna MacDonald, Dominion.
Stevie was a member of St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. He was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corp. (Machine Shops) for the past 28 years.
Besides his mother, he is survived by a son, Shaun (wife Lana), New Brunswick; daughter, Tracey MacDonald, Annapolis Valley and sister, Brenda (Mrs. Francis Tomiczek), Oshawa, Ont.
Visitation for the late Mr. MacDonald will be held today (Thursday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery.
Kenneth Marsden
72, Mira
Kenneth Marsden, 72, of 167 Brickyard Rd., Mira and formerly of Glace Bay and Newfoundland, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Francois, Nfld., he was the son of the late Simion and Emily (Domonic) Marsden.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay. He was employed with the S&L Railroad and the Cape Breton Development Corp. for 33 years before he retired at the age of 55. He enjoyed fishing and hunting but loved his hobby of doing wood work. He was a member of the Louisbourg Senior Club and a honourary member of the Albert Bridge Fire Dept.
Mr. Marsden is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 53 years, Laura (Butler) Marsden; loving father to sons, Eric, Trout Brook Road, Mira and Kenneth (Rosie), Milton, Ont.; daughters, Irene (Milton) Dejeet, Glace Bay, Diane (Clifford) Boutilier, Glace Bay. He was loving grandfather and great-grandfather to 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, Clarance, (Joyce), Thorold, Ont., Russell (Diane), Welland, Ont., Nathan (Melvina), Oromocto, N.B., Norman (Mammie), Burgo, Nfld.
He was predeceased by a son, David and one son and daughter infancy. Also by a sister, Evelyn (Marsden) Priddle.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, with Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Family flowers only by request. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Cape Breton Palliative Care Society or St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Margaret Caroline Murphy
86, Sydney
Mrs. Margaret Caroline (Carrie) Murphy, age 86, of Kenwood Drive, Sydney and formerly of Ingonish, died Monday Jan. 17, 2000, at home.
Born in Ingonish, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Annie (Stockley) MacLean.
She was a member of the Ingonish United Church and until retirement, was employed with the Spruces Hotel and the Ingonish Motel.
She is survived by two daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Alex Buglar), North Sydney and Agnes Hogan, Sydney; her son, John, Winnipeg; her brother, Wilson, Dartmouth; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold, sisters, Annabell Rideout, Blanche Sams, Eva Roper and brothers, Rod, Ernie, Jack, Kenny and Angus George.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish, today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Ingonish United Church with Rev. Rose-Hannah Gaskin officiating Burial will be in the United Church Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Ingonish United Church.
Florence Hope Worden
79, West Palm Beach, Fla.
Florence Hope Worden passed away suddenly Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, in West Palm Beach, Fla.
She was born in Alder Point, and was the daughter of the late Jenny MacDonald and Robert Cann.
Surviving are her daughter, Faith (Richard Ward), sons, Robert (Linda), Charles (Diane) and David, all in Massachusetts. Also surviving is a sister, Ruby Sarty, Maine; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; the Pearo family and cousins in Alder Point.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held this week in Marlboro, Mass.
Martin Francis Acker
82, Glace Bay
Martin Francis Acker, 82, of Seaview Manor, South Street, Glace Bay, and formerly of 84 Brookland St., Glace Bay, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at the manor.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Herman Angus and Genona (Tracey) Acker.
Martin grew up in Glendale, Inverness County. He worked as a coal miner for 37 years and for many years had an avid interest in harness racing as an owner and spectator on the hill or at the stables.
He is survived by sons, Herman, Glace Bay, and Eugene, Toronto; daughters, Betty (Jabez) Durnford, Toronto, Frances (Ronald) MacNeil, Mississauga, Sylvia (Leo) Jessome, Glace Bay, Judy (Carlos) Santos, Cambridge, Ont., Viola (Tony), Toronto, and Jennifer (Gerald) Brake, St. David’s, Nfld.; stepson, Ron Hiscock, Millville, Nfld.; sister, Margaret MacPherson, Dominion. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jessie and sisters, Mary, Tina and Florence.
Visitation was in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Sunday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service was held Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. John Graham officiating. Burial in St. Mary of the Angel’s Cemetery, Glendale, C.B.
