Mary (Pearl) Evelyn Thompson
81, Westmount
Mary (Pearl) Evelyn Thompson of Ingrahams Lane, Westmount, died peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late George and Mary (Boudreau) Reid.
She was a life member of the ladies auxiliary, Branch 126, Westmount, serving as president for seven years and treasurer for two years. Pearl was a devoted parishioner of Holy Rosary Church and a member of District No. 16 Seniors Club and Golden Oldies.
Pearl is survived by three sons, Patrick (Faye), Ottawa, Arthur, at home, and Richard (Sheila), Westmount; four daughters, Bernadette (Jim) Binns, Balls Creek, Pearl (Danny) Gaslard, Westmount, Sherry, at home, and Margaret (Dennis) Kaiser, Westmount; two sisters, Zelda (John) McPhail, Sydney and Joan (Henry) Mosher, Coxheath; a brother, Charles (Joan) Reid, Westmount; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward (Ned) Thompson, sister, Ella Royal and five brothers, George, Clarence, Malcolm, Gordon and Fred.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Holy Rosary Church, Westmount, Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dan MacInnis officiating. Interment in Holy Rosary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Complex or the Cape Breton Veterans Comfort Fund.
Mary Elizabeth Wedge
76, River Tillard, Richmond Co.
Mary Elizabeth Wedge, 76, of River Tillard, Richmond County, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in River Bourgeois, she was the daughter of the late Mary and James H. Sampson.
She is survived by three daughters, Maureen Hayter and Delores, both of St. Peter’s and Rose MacLeod, Judique; two sons, Jimmy and Cletus, both at home; one stepdaughter, Mary Gibson, St. Peter’s. Also survived by three sisters, Madelyn Cook, Mary Ellen Pentecost, both of River Bourgeois and Bernadette Mason, Ontario; seven brothers, Anselm, Joseph, Bernard, all of River Bourgeois, Albert, Guelph, Ont. Gregory, Quebec, Arthur and Benedict, both of Lynche’s River; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband, Louis Wedge, son, Eric and daughter, Gloria and a sister, Lena Dore.
Visitation will be in the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s today Friday 2-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Francis Cameron officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Funeral is under the direction of the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.
Anthony Bradswich
83, Bras d'Or
Anthony Bardswich, 83, of 47 Patrick Dr., Bras d’Or, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Joseph and Antoinette Bardswich.
He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, North Sydney. He worked as a mining supervisor in Northern Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. He enjoyed fishing and gardening for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Ardellice (Sweet); son, William, Sudbury; daughter, Amelia, Newfoundland; brother, William, Elliot Lake, Ont. and sisters, Nellie Liutkus, Sydney Mines, Frances MacNeil, Florence and Flora Scott, Florida. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Joe and John and his sister, Nancy.
Visitation will be held Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral, Tuesday, 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Sorrows Church with the Rev. Peter Piva officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.

Tom Currie
39, Sydney
Joseph Thomas Currie, 39, of Stuart Street, Sydney, formerly of Grand Mira passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Catherine (MacKay) Currie of Sydney and the late Joseph A. Currie.
He attended the Horizon Achievement Centre, Sydney and was a member of the Ace Bowling League and the C.I.D. (Community Involvement of the Disabled).
Surviving are two brothers, John (Mary), Howie Centre, Bernie (Patricia Lynn), Guysborough; four sisters, Mary (John) Huskins, Edmonton, Alta., Patricia (Bob) Schilling and Pauline (Gary) Sexsmith, both of Calgary, Cecilia (Stewart) MacPherson, Sydney and 10 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Donald and three infant nieces.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Margaret’s Church, Grand Mira. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, Grand Mira.
Donations may be made to Horizon Achievement Centre, Prince Street, Sydney or to a charity of choice.
George David Dunderdale
73, Sydney Mines
George David Dunderdale, 73, of King Street, Sydney Mines, originally of Toronto, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at home.
Born in Toronto, he was the son of the late William and Mini (Pugh) Dunderdale.
He worked as a drywall tradesman in Toronto most of his working life, moving to Cape Breton in 1979.
He is survived by his sons, Robert, Sydney; his daughter, Cathy (Andy) Taplin, White Court, Alta.; sisters, Marion Brierley, Toronto and Barbara Bashchak, Toronto and by four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Susan (MacKinnon), Bras d’Or, brothers, John (Jack), Harold, James and Billy (William) and by his sister, Mary.
There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines with the Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial will take place in Bras d’Or.
Arrangements are under the direction of G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
Gladys Irene Fortune
77, New Waterford
Gladys Irene Fortune, 77, of 319 Maxwell St., New Waterford, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Irene (Rankin) Mason.
She was a member of Saint Agnes Church. Gladys enjoyed bingo, but most of all, she loved being with her family.
Surviving are her daughters, Joyce (Mrs. Charles Burlock), Shirley Starzyczny, both of New Waterford, Irene Pettigrew, at home; son, Louis, also at home; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Gladys was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by her husband, John (Red), son, John (Red) Jr., daughter, Marie in infancy.
Visitation will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Saturday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral, Sunday, 2 p.m. in St. Agnes Church with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
