Bert Frances
84, Sydney
Bert Frances, 84, of Sydney, passed away at the Kingston General Hospital, Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000.
Born in Sydney, Bert was a son of the late Christopher and Jemina (Green) Frances.
He retired in 1977 from Sydney Steel and was a member of Trinity Church.
Bert is survived by his two daughters, Barbara (Arnie) Mombourquette, Sydney, Debbie (Pat) Saulnier, Kingston, Ont. and by five grandchildren, Arlene, Carla, Mary Beth, Rebecca and Paul.
He was predeceased by his sister, Ruby Hart and brother, Arthur.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel, Monday, 2 p.m. with the Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Mary Anne Hawrylak
92, Sydney
Mary Anne Hawrylak, 92, formerly of 73 Bryant St., Sydney, passed away peacefully at the Congregation of Notre Dame Health Care Centre, Sydney, on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Ann (MacKillop) Black.
She was a lifelong member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier and a faithful member of the CWL.
She is survived by five sons, Michael, Anthony (Tony), Gregory, all of Sydney, John, Arizona and Joseph, Sault Ste. Marie; four daughters, Kaye Boutilier, Upper Leitches Creek, Rose McNeil, North Sydney; Sr. Margaret and Sr. Elaine, CND, both of Sydney.
She is also survived by two sisters, Bernadette MacDougall, Dorchester, Mass. and Genevieve Dalton, Sydney, as well as 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph in 1971, an infant son, Robert in 1954 and a granddaughter, Michelle in 1989.
She was also predeceased by seven brothers, Roderick, Neil, Francis, Herbert, James, Anthony, Ted and one sister, Catherine (Kitty) Curran, Connecticut, U.S.A.
Family visitation only will take place Sunday at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, Monday, 11 a.m. with the Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Margaret (Bates) Kublek
88, Glace Bay
Margaret (Bates) Kublek, 88, of 125 Seaview St., Glace Bay, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, in the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Maria (MacDonald) Bryden.
She resided in Glace Bay for most of her life and was a member of Holy Cross Parish.
She is survived by daughters, Theresa (Mrs. George Close), Bedford, N.S., Mellie (Mrs. Roy Plichie), Glace Bay, Maurena (Mrs. John MacNeil) and Ann (Mrs. Leo MacNeil), both of Northside East Bay, Mary (Mrs. Eldon Smith), Halifax, Rosalie (Mrs. Gerard (Al) Moores), Glace Bay, Rita (Mrs. Jim Rudderham), Sydney; sons, Thomas, Halifax, Kevin (Ann) Bates, Dominion, Frank (Adele) Bates, Glace Bay; stepchildren, Charles Kublek Jr. (Sandra), Chezzetcook, Priscilla (Mrs. Alan Latimer), Ottawa, Ellen Ann (Mrs. Rodney MacIntosh), Waverly, N.S., Alice Marie (Mrs. Dan Pyke), Musquodoboit; sisters, Dorothy, Bessie and Norma; brothers, Gerald and Buddy; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and also several great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Gerald M. Bates in 1962 and by her second husband, Charles Kublek in 1998, sons, Gerald and Joseph, brothers, Angus, Lawrence, Leo, Mike, Basil, Melvin, Joseph, James and a sister, Margaret.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in Holy Cross Church Monday at 11 a.m. with Rev. John Graham officiating. Burial will follow in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

Martin Hector MacDonald
72, Sydney
With great sadness the family wish to announce the death of Martin Hector MacDonald, age 72, of 218 Rockdale Ave., Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late John Joseph and Mary (MacPhee) MacDonald, Sydney.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney. He retired from the CNR in 1986 after 44 years of service. He was also employed with the Bank of Nova Scotia (Sydney Shopping Centre) from 1975-1996.
Martin is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Mary (Mamie) Buchanan; two daughters, Cathy (Mrs. John Turner), Sydney and Martyne (Mrs. Bob MacDonald), Sydney; two sisters, Theresa Burns, South Carolina and Kathleen Engle, Ontario; four grandchildren, Katie Anne, Kelly, Lindsay Lee and Martin; by one great-grandchild, Joseph and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his twin brother, Vince (V.J.), half-brothers, Clarence and Neil, stepbrother, R.J., sister, Marjorie and half-sister, Margaret.
The late Mr. MacDonald will have visitation Monday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Church, Sydney with the Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Building Fund; Palliative Care or to a charity of choice.

Ruth (Peach) MacLeod of Peach Street, Port Morien, who died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, will have visitation at Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today (Saturday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien, Sunday at 3 p.m. with Rev. Paul Findlay officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Anglican Cemetery, Black Brook.
