Hector Joseph MacPherson
Sydney
Hector J. MacPherson of Sydney, formerly of Big Pond, passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Breton Bay Nursing Home.
Born at Big Pond Centre, he was the son of the late William and Annie (Gillis) MacPherson, Big Pond Centre.
He was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney and was employed at Canadian National Express for 36 years, retiring in 1986.
Surviving are his wife, the former Joan A. MacDonald, Sydney; two daughters, Louise (Bob) Cloutier, Saint John, N.B., Joanne (Mike) Peck, Ottawa; four sons, David (Marilyn) MacPherson, Howie Centre, Hector (Erin) MacPherson, Halifax, Philip (Kelli) MacPherson, Howie Centre, Dan (Carol) MacPherson, Dominion. Also surviving are three sisters, Sr. George Marie, CSM, Sydney, Dorothy, Peterborough, Ont., Marie (Reggie), Sydney; two brothers, Joseph (Beth), Big Pond, William (Mary), Halifax. Mr. MacPherson is also survived by nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Eunice, Big Pond and Margaret, Halifax, two daughters in infancy as well as two infant brothers.
There is no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa’s Church, 9 a.m. Monday with the Rev. A. MacDougall officiating. Interment in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Big Pond.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Dennis John Murphy
54, Ingonish Beach
Dennis Murphy, 54, of Ingonish Beach, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at the Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour.
Born at Murphy’s Cove, he was the son of the late Oscar Moran and Gertrude (Murphy) Lockhart.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Ingonish Beach and was a volunteer co-ordinator for the Ingonish youth group. Dennis was a retired school bus driver for the Northside Victoria School Board.
He is survived by his loving wife, the former Sarah Whitty; his two loving daughters, Lisa (John) Penny, London, Ont. and Melissa (David) Fraser, Ingonish Beach; one son, Tyler, at home; sisters, Barb (Jack) Lowe and Pauline (Enos) Barkhouse, both of Kentville; brothers, Lorimar (Nancy) Lockhart, Lynn (Debbie) Lockhart, both of Kentville and Grant Lockhart, New Brunswick; two grandchildren, Ryan and a special grandson, Jonah.
He was predeceased by one brother, Harold.
Visitation for the late Mr. Murphy will take place tonight (Saturday) from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church, Ingonish Beach with Fr. John Morrison officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Dear Dad:

Jane M. Burton
72, Neil's Harbour
Mrs. Jane (MacDonald-Redquest) Burton, 72, of Neil’s Harbour and formerly of Fourchu and Ingonish Beach, died Jan. 23, 2000, at the Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour. She was born at Fourchu and was a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Ingonish.
She is survived by two daughters Bernice (Mrs. Martin MacDougall), Ingonish, Ms. Valerie Dunphy, British Columbia; three sons, Byron Redquest, Ingonish, Greg Redquest, Neil’s Harbour, Ernest Redquest, Sydney; one sister Anne Burke, Dominion and her grandchildren Gail MacDougall, Michael Redquest, Blair Redquest, Michelle Aucoin, Ernie Redquest Jr. and Craig Dunphy.
She was predeceased by her daughter Beverly Ann Redquest and brothers John MacDonald and Ernest (Billie) MacDonald.
Visitation will be today in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in St. Peter’s Church with Rev. John Morrison officiating. Spring burial will be in the parish cemetery.
By family request, there will be no flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the Highland Manor, Neil’s Harbour.
Charles Cathcart
95, Michigan
Charles (NMN) Cathcart, 95, of New Boston for 2 1/2 years, and a former resident of Ferndale, Detroit, MI., since 1963, died Jan. 20, 2000, at home.
He was born May 5, 1904, in Bridgeport, Nova Scotia. He married M. Eva Cathcart, who predeceased him Jan. 28, 1980, in St. Agnes Catholic Church, Detroit, MI.
He is survived by daughters Janet B. Sevakis, Ferndale, MI., Donna C. (Otto) Knittel, Romeo, MI., Sr. Paula J. Cathcart, IHM, Detroit, MI., Judy A. (Douglas) Washburn, Comber, Ont.; son Charles C. (Marlene) Cathcart, Westland, MI.; sisters Hilda Cathcart, New Waterford, N.S., and Bernadette Cathcart, Sydney, N.S.; brother William Cathcart, New Waterford, N.S.; 10 grandchildren, one deceased and 14 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Cathcart was former member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Detroit, and St. James Catholic Church, Ferndale. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society and The Telephone Pioneers of America. Charles worked for Michigan Bell for 42 years.
Visiting hours were 2-9 p.m. Sunday. Rosary Service was at 7 p.m. In-State will be Monday at 10 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. from St. Columban Catholic Church, Birmingham, with Rev. Msgr. John A. Trese officiating. Burial in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, MI.
Donations may be made to the Hospice of Michigan or IHM Ministry Fund.
Tom Currie
39, Sydney
Joseph Thomas Currie, 39, of Stuart Street, Sydney, formerly of Grand Mira, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Catherine (MacKay) Currie of Sydney and the late Joseph A. Currie.
He attended the Horizon Achievement Centre, Sydney, and was a member of the Ace Bowling League and the C.I.D. (Community Involvement of the Disabled).
Surviving are two brothers, John (Mary), Howie Centre, Bernie (Patricia Lynn), Guysborough; four sisters, Mary (John) Huskins, Edmonton, Alta., Patricia (Bob) Schilling and Pauline (Gary Sexsmith), both of Calgary, Cecilia (Stewart) MacPherson, Sydney, and 10 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Donald and three infant nieces.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Margaret’s Church, Grand Mira. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, Grand Mira.

James Dolomount
101, North Sydney
James Dolomount, 101, formerly of Brook Street, North Sydney, passed away peacefully at the Northside Community Guest Home Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000.
Born in Rose Blanche, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late George and Alice (Chislett) Dolomount. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church. Before he moved to North Sydney 20 years ago, Jim operated a general store in Rose Blanche, Nfld., for more than 40 years, retiring at age 72. During his retirement, he often found enjoyment gardening and building model boats. He lived a happy and active life and will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are two sons Gerald (Ignatia) and Ronald (Eudevilla), both of Corner Brook, Nfld.; two daughters Annie Hardy and Gloria (Dennis) Allen, both of North Sydney; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Ann Strickland; three sisters Maud, Annie and Mary; three brothers Charles, Arthur and Percival.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery.
