Bert Frances
84, Sydney
Bert Frances, 84, of Sydney, passed away at the Kingston General Hospital, Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000.
Born in Sydney, Bert was a son of the late Christopher and Jemina (Green) Frances.
He retired in 1977 from Sydney Steel and was a member of Trinity Church.
Bert is survived by his two daughters, Barbara (Arnie) Mombourquette, Sydney, Debbie (Pat) Saulnier, Kingston, Ont., and by five grandchildren, Arlene, Carla, Mary Beth, Rebecca and Paul.
He was predeceased by his wife Irene (Janes), sister, Ruby Hart and brother, Arthur.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel, Monday, 2 p.m., with the Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Mary Helena Halliday
69, Sydney Mines
Mary Helena Halliday, 65, of 6 Pero St., Sydney Mines, passed away Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family, following a brief illness.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Mary (MacIntyre) Walsh. She was a member of St. Pius X Parish, Sydney Mines, and a life member of the Parish CWL. In her younger years, she was a member of the Strand Ladies Bowling League and the Tuesday night ladies club.
Surviving are her daughters Winnie (Walter) Burt, Anne Marie (David) Jardine, Mona Halliday, all of Sydney Mines and D’Anne (Emmett) O’Callaghan, Sydney; sons Brian (Janie), Harry (Cathy), Blair (Theresa), all of Sydney Mines and Purcell (Dorothy), Big Bras d’Or. Also surviving are her grandchildren Mary Louise, Clayton, Jennifer, Cindy, Brian, Robbie, Christian, Laurie Dawn, Jeannine, Vanessa, Christa, Sheila, Jacklyn and Michael and her great-grandchildren Courtney, Mitchell and Colton and her dear friend John Hill, Sydney. She is also survived by her sisters Rebecca (Mrs. Pat Brogan), Sydney Mines and Theresa (Mrs. Sylvester O’Connell), North Sydney.
She was predeceased by her husband Robert Laird Halliday, her son Clayton, her grandson Thomas Purcell, her great-grandson Brandon Coady and her brothers John James and Henry.
Visitation was held Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will be held today (Monday) at 2 p.m. in St. Pius X Church with the Rev. Tony Macdonald officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Mary Ellen Kenney
35, Halifax
Mary Ellen Kenney, 35, of Halifax, formerly of Sydney, passed away Jan. 22, 2000, surrounded by all those she loved.
Affectionately known by her late father, Walter Kenney, as his ‘lovable renegade,’ Mary Ellen endeavored to create an atmosphere of happiness wherever the world took her. Her spirit and zest for life has left those she touched with fond memories and many reasons to smile. Her generosity was pure. Her loyalty to friends was undying. The mutual affection that existed between her nieces and nephews and herself was an example of the value she placed on unconditional love. She had an ability to meet and make new friends wherever she ventured and always enjoyed creating memorable moments.
Raised in Sydney, Mary Ellen was an avid athlete with many awards demonstrating her competitive spirit through her school years and throughout her life. After graduating from the V.G. Hospital in Halifax, she worked as respiratory therapist for two years at Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and 10 years at the V.G. where she worked hard to care for her patients with understanding and compassion. She then moved on to Saudi Arabia to continue her work and experience the world – and the world to experience her.
She is survived by her mother Mary Kenney, Sydney, Carol Murphy (Tom), East Bay, Bob Kenney (Susan Coffin), Halifax, Tracey Kenney (Chris Murray), Ottawa, Joanne Addicott (Steve), Glace Bay, Margaret Lee (Wayne), Stephenville, Nfld. and a family of loving friends, especially Lisa Andrewes.
Visitation was held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Sunday 7-9 p.m. and will be held Monday (today) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney, with Fr. A. MacDougall officiating. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, alongside her beloved father.

Margaret (Bates) Kublek
88, Glace Bay
Margaret (Bates) Kublek, 88, of 125 Seaview St., Glace Bay, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, in the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
She was also predeceased by her brother B. William Bryden.
Visitation was in Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in Holy Cross Church Monday (today) at 11 a.m. with Rev. John Graham officiating. Burial will follow in St. Anne’s Cemetery.
The family would be grateful for donations in Margaret’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
John Archie MacKinnon
84, Neil's Harbour
John Archie MacKinnon, 84, of Neils Harbour, formerly of Smelt Brook, passed away Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Smelt Brook, he was the son of the late James William and Katherine (MacKinnon) MacKinnon. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi, Smelt Brook. He was a fisherman for most of his life, but also worked at Dingwall Gypsum Quarry. He operated a truck for Martell’s Construction and was a school bus driver for a number of years. He had a talent for music, playing the fiddle, accordion and mandolin. He was a member of the Cape Breton Fiddler’s Association. He lived his last few years at Highland Manor, Neils Harbour.
Survived by four daughters Clara (Mrs. Joseph Bourque), Alton, Stella (Mrs. Angus MacLean), Coldbrook, Virginia (Mrs. Winston Briand), South Harbour and Wilma MacKinnon (Ray Solomon), Aspy Bay; one chosen son Frank Hawley, River Ryan; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by his wife of 60 years, the former Rachel Dixon and one daughter Martha in infancy.
The late John Archie MacKinnon will have visitation from 6-9 p.m. (today) Monday in St. Joseph’s Church, Dingwall. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Church, Dingwall, with Fr. Duncan MacIssac officiating. Interment in parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Highland Manor, Neils Harbour.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish.
Malcolm John Matheson
82, Little Narrows
Malcolm John Matheson, 82, of Little Narrows, passed away Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Alderwood Guest Home, Baddeck.
Born in Little Narrows, Malcolm was a son of the late John Edward and Alena (MacLean) Matheson. He was a member of the Little Narrows Presbyterian Church.
Malcolm is survived by two sisters Margaret Kerr and Jean Lawley, both of Halifax and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers Alex and Norman.
Visitation will be held in the Little Narrows Presbyterian Church Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Richie Robinson officiating. Interment in Little Narrows Presbyterian Cemetery, under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
