Frank Stephen Murphy
87, Glace Bay
Frank Stephen Murphy, 87, of 30 Rockdale Ave., Glace Bay, died peacefully at his home on Monday, Jan. 24, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Stephen and Frances (Head) Murphy.
Frank was a loyal and devote member of St. Anne’s Parish. In earlier years, he was employed with the Dominion Coal Company as a fireman. He was later employed for many years with the Seaboard Power Plant as a high pressure boiler operator; while there he was a member of the Seaboard Sports Club.
He is survived by his wife, the former Christina Currie; two daughters, Audrey (Mrs. Tom McMahon), Dominion and Louise, Halifax; one son, Frank, Glace Bay; five grandchildren, Frank, Lynne, Cheryl, Cathy and Denise McMahon; brother, Hilbert, Glace Bay; one sister, Ann Walsh, Glace Bay. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Edward.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay, beginning Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in St. Anne’s Church, Thursday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Victorian Order of Nurses.
John (Wanders) William Young
53, Scotchtown
John (Wanders) William Young, 53, of Catherine Street, Scotchtown, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at home.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Beatrice Young.
John was employed at Devco for 23 years.
“Poppie” was a loving grandfather to Tanya Marie, John Andrew, Rebecca Diane and Kallie Renee. He will be sadly missed by his daughter-in-law, Tracy MacLeod, New Waterford.
He also survived by a daughter, Wanda (Campbell) Rawding, Halifax. Johnny was a special “brother” to Rodney (Todds) Young and Lauchie Hinchey.
Besides his mom, he was predeceased by his wife, Diane (Peckham) Young and his only son, Johnny.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the Union Grove Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford.
Charles Cathcart
95, Michigan
Charles Cathcart, 95, of New Boston, Mich., died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at home.
Born May 5, 1904, in Bridgeport, N.S., he was the son of the late Michael and Bernadette (MacNeil) Cathcart of Bridgeport, Lingan and New Waterford.
He is survived by sisters, Hilda Cathcart and Bernadette (Bunnie) Cathcart, Windsor Street, Sydney; brother, William Cathcart, New Waterford.
He was predeceased by four sisters, Sr. Mary Helen Cathcart (CSM), Nora Larade, Clair Munson and Mary B. Cathcart and three brothers, James Cathcart, Leonard Cathcart and Emmett Cathcart.
Burial in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, Mich.
Florence Gosling
72, Sydney
Florence Gosling, 72, of Sydney, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at home, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Burin, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Minnie (Pyke) Francis.
Florence was an adherent of Trinity United Church. She retired from the City of Sydney Hospital, Dietary Department in 1985.
Predeceased by her husband, Stanley in 1999; Florence is survived by two daughters, Blanche (Sandy) Gale, Russell, Ont. and Beth (Rick) Hynes, Sydney; one son, Stan, Sydney; six grandchildren, Christopher, Karen, Jeffrey, Stephen, Robert, and Aimee; one sister, Ann Pritchett, Mississauga, Ont.; one brother, Gordon (Max), Mississauga. Ont.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Bill, Clare, George and Ernest.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a funeral service held at Trinity United Church Friday, 11 a.m. with the Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Reception to be held in the church hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or the Sydney Chapter of the VON.
Annie (Nancy) McNee Hiscock
90, Sydney
Annie (Nancy) McNee Hiscock of Sydney, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, in her 90th year.
Born in Ayre, Scotland, Nancy was a daughter of the late Alexander and Janet (McNee) Nicholson. She was a member of the First United Church, Sydney. At one time Nancy was the owner/operator of Nancy’s Store. She lived life to the fullest – she’ll never be forgotten.
Nancy is survived by her daughters, Janet, at home and Sandra (John) Morrison, Coxheath; a stepbrother, Ralph Cameron, Sydney and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, sister, Janet MacFadygen and brothers, Alex Nicholson and Hughie Cameron.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel, Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Annie Joseph
91, Halifax
Annie Joseph, 91, of Halifax, formerly of MacDougall Heights, Sydney River, passed away in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII on Monday, Jan. 24, 2000.
Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Margaret (Bojos) Laba.
She is survived by daughters, Christina (Tina), Audrey Joseph and husband, Charles, granddaughters, Di-Ann, Charlene and Michele Joseph, all of Halifax; sisters, Josephine Abbass, Sydney, Effie Castinerias and husband, José, Delores, brothers, John and George Laba, all of Halifax.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward, sisters Emma, Shamie, Frances and Cecelia, brother, Joe.
There will be no visitation. Memorial service will be held at a later date.
