John Donald (Donn) Cameron
57, Howie Centre
In his 58th year, after a valiant battle with cancer, Donn found eternal peace with the Lord at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Friday, Jan. 28, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, Donn was a son to the late John Donald and Adeline (McIntyre) Cameron.
Donn is survived by his loving wife, Gail; son, Gary (Christine), Hamilton, Ont.; daughters, Deborah Cameron and Lorraine Lee (Kevin), both of Hamilton, Ont.; stepchildren, Terry and John Henneveld, B.C., Patti and Doug Miller, Alberta, Russ and Heather Wilcox and Teddi and Marvin Marsh, both of B.C. Donn is also survived by 11 loving grandchildren.
Donn was predeceased by one special son, John Donald (Donnie) Cameron.
Donn lived most of his life in Ontario, where he was an employee of Dofasco for almost 25 years, but his heart was always in Cape Breton.
Donn touched the hearts of everyone who met him and will always be remembered for his robust smile, his sense of humour and his love for music.
Visitation will be held today (Saturday), 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service to be held Sunday, 2:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Big Pond with Fr. Gillis officiating. Private burial.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donn’s memory to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society.
He never claimed to be an artist. He didn’t want to be a star. All he ever wanted to do was sing and play guitar.

William Thomas Dunphy
78, Aberdeen, Inverness Co.
William Thomas Dunphy, 78, of Aberdeen, Inverness County and formerly of Middle Harbour, Victoria County, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Middle Harbour, he was the son of the late Alex and Elizabeth (Lockman) Dunphy.
He was an adherent of St. Joseph’s Church, Dingwall and was formerly employed at the Dingwall Gypsum Plant, Nova Construction and recently the Iona Gypsum Plant.
He is survived by his companion, Alice M. Keeling and his former wife, Marcella F. Fraser; daughters, Christine Elizabeth (Mrs. Fred Banks), Edmonton, Alta. and Eleanor Ann (Mrs. James Taylor), Toronto; sons, William (Donna), Pleasant Bay, Inverness County and Alex A. (Susan), Middle Harbour; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, David Nelson and great-grandson, Nicholas Smith.
Visitation will be held today (Saturday) after 7 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Dingwall. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Burial under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home will be in the parish cemetery.
Doris Evelyn Gardiner
80, Sydney
Doris Evelyn Gardiner, 80, of Columbia Street, Sydney, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
She was survived by her sister Isabelle (Pook) Coté.
Hazel Payne
81, Glace Bay
Hazel Payne, 81 of Seaview Manor and formerly of 63 Brookland St., Glace Bay, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Donkin she was the daughter of the late William (Bill) and Emily (Snow) Milley.
Mrs. Payne was a member of the Glace Bay Salvation Army Citadel.
Mrs. Payne is survived by her daughter, Irene (George) McLean, Glace Bay; sisters, Abie (John) Aucoine, Donkin, Maomie Brown, Birch Grove, Jennie Grant, Tower Road, Mary Tutty, Glace Bay; brothers, Daivd (Beryl), Donkin, Al (Molly), Tower Road, Francie (Evelyn), Glace Bay, Hube (Beatrice), Glace Bay, Jim (Mae), Glace Bay, Bill (Florence), Sydney River, Ken, Cambridge, Ont.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her first husband, Emerson Morrison and her second husband, Frank Payne, son, George Morrison, sister, Margaret, brothers, Fred, Tommy, John, Apsolom and a great-granddaughter, Kimberly.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 29 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Sunday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. in the Salvation Army Citadel, Glace Bay, with Maj. Denzel Baggs officiating. Burial will be in Oakfield Cemetery, Marion Bridge.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army Memorial Fund or to the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
Vera Maxine Dorey
86, Glace Bay
Vera Maxine Dorey, R.N., 83, of Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, died Jan. 29, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Moncton, N.B., she was the daughter of the late William and Essie Steeves. Vera graduated from the St. John General Hospital Nursing School in N.B. in 1937. She nursed in Moncton and New York as well as three years at the General Hospital and 14 years at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay. Vera was a former resident of Villa Nova in Dominion. She was also a former member of Knox United Church, Glace Bay, and Gordon United Church in Reserve. Vera loved animals, handcrafts, oil painting and sketching. At one time she also belonged to the Dominion Senior Citizens Club.
She is survived by her daughter Leslie (Mrs. Clayton Snow), Dutch Brook; son Bill (Debbie) Dorey, Carlton Place, Ont.; brother Herb (Bertha) Steeves, Moncton, N.B.; sister Carol Lee (Tom), Toronto; sister-in-law Maizie Aiken, Nepean, Ottawa, and special friend Audrey (Honey) MacNeil and family, Dominion. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; three grandchildren Marc Boudreault, Ottawa, and Craig and Aaron Dorey, Carlton Place, Ont.
Vera was predeceased by her husband Frederick Dorey in 1980; also a brother Willis in infancy.
Visitation took place on Sunday evening 7-9 p.m. and will take place today 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial to take place in Fair Haven Cemetery, Moncton, N.B.

Joseph Felix "D.F" Doucette
72, New Waterford
Joseph Daniel Felix “D.F.” Doucette, 72 of 3567 Emerald St., New Waterford, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at the home of his son Joseph and daughter-in-law Cheryl.
Born in Inverness, he was the son of the late Thomas and Sophie (Gaudet) Doucette. He was a member of Saint Michael’s Parish, River Ryan. Joseph worked as a lumberjack in the Highlands. He was also a coal miner having worked in Inverness, #12 and #16 collieries in New Waterford and #20 and #26 collieries in Glace Bay. He worked as an insulator in the Heavy Water Plants in Port Hawkesbury and Glace Bay, and later in Fort McMurray, Alberta. He was an avid horseman and at one time owned and trained horses. Woodworking was a hobby which he gained much enjoyment from.
Surviving are his daughters Mary (Doug), Toronto, Marjorie (Michael), Grace (George), Jane Ann (James Bernard), Christina (Brian), all of New Waterford, Loretta (Marie) (Carl), Greenwood, Dorothy, Grand Cache, Alberta; two sons Joseph (Cheryl) with whom he resided and Victor (Beverly), Toronto. He is also survived by 31 grandchildren; a brother Gordon, Cape North; four sisters Mary Cecile, Pearline, Marjorie and Christina.
Joseph was predeceased by his wife, the former Julia Helle; one daughter Sophie Ann; one son Bradley and one grandson Jeremy and by brothers Paul Angus and Thomas.
Visitation for the late Mr. Doucette will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, on Monday 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held in Saint Michael’s Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
