Susan Jane Crane
90, Sydney
Susan Jane Crane, 90, of Breton Bay Nursing Home formerly of DesBarres Street, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Rose Blanche, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Dolimont) Best. She was a member of Christ Anglican Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by four sons, Robert (Virginia), Westmount, Donald (Joan), Bramalea, Ont., William (Kay), Parksville, B.C., Gerald (Barbara), Mira; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty King, Brampton, Ont. and Laura Hardy, North Sydney.
Susan was predeceased by her husband, William Robert Crane (1986), three sisters, Alice Hardy, Mary Sheppard and Ann Ashford, two brothers, Robert and George.
Visitation was held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday 7 p.m. and Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in Christ Church today at 10 a.m. with Rev. Glenn Kent officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to charity of choice.
Sister Catherine Rooney
74, Sydney Mines
Sister Catherine M. Rooney, of Notre Dame Convent, Sydney Mines, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at the CND Infirmary, Charlottetown, P.E.I., after a short illness.
She was the daughter of the late Philip Rooney and Helena (Ellen) McKenna, Cherry Valley, P.E.I.
Sister was born April 24, 1910, and was the last surviving member of her family. She made her religious profession in the Congregation of Notre Dame, Montreal in 1931. Sister started her career as an art teacher, took interest in pottery and continued in that field of work until her death.
Sister Rooney lived and taught in Newcastle, N.B.; Mount St. Bernard College, Antigonish, N.S., where she spent 30 years running a pottery school; Notre Dame Convent, Ottawa and the last 33 years at Notre Dame Convent in Sydney Mines.
Sister will be remembered for her creative pottery molds and designs and for her unusual talent.
Scores of friends acclaimed her as a ‘vibrant special lady’ who showed kindness and compassion to everybody especially the down and out.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Doyle, P.E.I., Rose in infancy and Sister Eileen, RSV, Lake Placid, N.Y.; 10 brothers, Philip, Dennis, Rev. Alphonse, Rev. Joseph, Rev. Patrick, Rev. James, DP, Msgr. Eugene, Michael, William and Francis.
Her remains rest at Notre Dame Convent, 246 Sydney St., Charlottetown, P.E.I. and visitation took place Tuesday, Oct. 5.
Funeral Wednesday, Oct. 6 from St. Dunstan’s Basilica at 10 a.m.
Roderick Joseph MacMullin
83, New Waterford
Roderick J. MacMullin, 83, of 470 Smith St., New Waterford, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
An employee of the Dominion Coal Company and Cape Breton Development Corp. from 1936 to his retirement in 1981 at Lingan Coal Mine. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3209, New Waterford, becoming a member in 1943. He was also a member of the New Waterford and District Pensioners Club. He was a member of Saint Agnes Parish, New Waterford.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine (MacVarish); sons, Ian, Moncton, N.B., Donald and Ronald, both of New Waterford; sisters, Rodena, Effie, Kate, Margaret and Mary.
He was predeceased by his sister, Catherine.
There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held Thursday, Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Church with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Roderick Joseph MacMullin
New Waterford
A memorial mass for the late Roderick MacMullin, who passed away on Oct. 3, 1999, will be held Thursday, at 10 a.m. at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
Michael Siu Kin Szeto

Michael Siu Kin Szeto, of Terrace Street, Sydney, passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Canton, China, he was a son of the late Shu Yiu and Chor Po (Lam) Szeto. Michael came to Canada in 1967 and lived in Ottawa. In 1978, he moved to Sydney and was the co-owner of the Peking Restaurant. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and many loyal customers.
He is survived by his wife, Yuk Kuen (Susan Wong); three sons, Andy (Tonia), Toronto, Raymond, Ottawa and Erik, at home; two sisters, Lai Hing, Sydney and Lai Chui (Betty), Halifax; three brothers, Siu Chi, his wife (Pui Ling), Sydney; Siu Ko (Miller), his wife (Bernadette), Sydney and Siu Wai (Wally), his wife (Rose), Sydney; father-in-law, Yu Ho Wong, Sydney.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel, Saturday, 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating.
Leona P. Lloyd Kennedy

Leona P. Lloyd Kennedy, of Cottage Road, Sydney, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in St. Peter’s, N.S., she was a daughter of the late Stephen P. Sampson and Goldie (Arnold).
Leona was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12 Ladies Auxiliary and the Sergeant Mess Dart League. Leona was also a member of the Cape Breton Home Crafters. Leona retired from the McGillivray Guest Home as a personal care worker.
She is survived by daughters, Carolyn (Don) Matheson, Sydney and Diane (Ross) Lenser, Ottawa; son, David (Susan), Sydney; two sisters, Marjorie Campbell, Sydney and Kathleen (Howard) Coadic, Sydney; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband Ronald H. Lloyd (1972), son, Ronnie, sister, Ada and a brother, Reg.
The late Mrs. Kennedy will have visitation at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service is Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Deanna Marie Manning
33, Sydney
Deanna Marie Manning, 33, of Whitney Pier, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy battle against cancer.
Deanna is survived by her parents, Albert and Deborah (Jacobs) Manning. Her three children, Debra Anne, 13, David Lesley, 9, and Danielle Rebecca Mae, 8, all living at home.
Also surviving Deanna are her three sisters, Kimberly and Jodey, B.C. and Katherine Anne, Sydney; her brother, Albert Joseph, Sydney and many aunts and uncles.
She will be deeply missed by her loving companion, Scott Skinner and her very dear aunt and best friend, Marilyn Manning. Deanna put up a brave fight and will be sadly missed by all.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. There will be a memorial service held at the Salvation Army Citadel, Whitney Pier, Tuesday, 11 a.m. with Capt. Morris Vincent officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to her children or the Canadian Cancer Society.
