Michael Siu Kin Szeto

Michael Siu Kin Szeto, of Terrace Street, Sydney, passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Canton, China, he was a son of the late Shu Yiu and Chor Po (Lam) Szeto. Michael came to Canada in 1967 and lived in Ottawa. In 1978, he moved to Sydney and was the co-owner of the Peking Restaurant. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and many loyal customers.
He is survived by his wife, Yuk Kuen (Susan Wong); three sons, Andy (Tonia), Toronto, Raymond, Ottawa and Erik, at home; two sisters, Lai Hing, Sydney and Lai Chui (Betty), Halifax; three brothers, Siu Chi, his wife (Pui Ling), Sydney; Siu Ko (Miller), his wife (Bernadette), Sydney and Siu Wai (Wally), his wife (Rose), Sydney; father-in-law, Yu Ho Wong, Sydney.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel, Saturday, 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating.
Annie Kinnaborough Barter
96, Glace Bay
Mrs. Annie K. Barter, 96, a resident of Seaview Manor for the pass five years and formerly of 19-A Myrman Dr., Glace Bay, passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at the Manor.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late David and Catherine (Kinnaborough) Neilson. She was a member of Glace Bay United Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Church Guild. She was a life time member of the Sisters of Ulster No. 481 LOBA Orange Lodge.
She is survived by three daughters, Jeanette (Mrs. Thomas Shaw), Glace Bay, Kay (Mrs. Pat Burns), Glace Bay, June (Mrs. Eddie Blades), Shelburne, N.S.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents she is predeceased by her husband Ralph in 1974, sisters, Bella MacDonald, Katie Boutilier, Lizzie MacKay, Janet Boutilier, brother, James Neilson.
Visitation for the late Annie Barter will be held Saturday 7-9 and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Monday 2 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jennifer Smart officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Highway.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Glace Bay United Baptist Church, in memory of Annie.
Constance Marie (Pictou) Sark-Burton
56, Sydney Forks
Constance Marie (Pictou) Sark-Burton, 56, daughter of Bella Pictou (Millbrook) and Leonard Stevens (Ojibway) passed auay, Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, after a two-year battle with cancer.
She is survived by three children, Marc, David and Kathryn; a brother and sister, Bobby and Audrey Pictou; five grandchildren, Pasmay, Lyle, Brandon, Tia and Shaya and her husband, Kevin.
Connie worked as a Mi’kmaq-English court translator with the Mi’kmaq Justice Institute. Previously, she worked as a counsellor with the Mi’kmaw Lodge, Eskasoni and with the Mawiomi Treatment Centre, Maria and in the mental health field in Kansas and Maryland. A strong belief that the disease of alcoholism was of life threatening importance to her people led her to move her family to Cape Breton in 1985.
Connie was adopted by John and Lillian Sark, and grew up in Gaspepagia, Maria, Quebec. She graduated from Restigouche High School and was in the pioneer class of Saint Joseph’s Teachers College in Cross Pointe. She later completed several advanced programs including treatment and assessment techniques at Yale University. She served on the Governor’s commission on aging in Kansas, the New Hampshire Indian Council, Native Women of Quebec, and North American Indian Women’s Council on Chemical Dependency. She is best remembered, however, for her gentle, but strong insistence on dignity and respect for all people.
The family appreciates the many kindnesses shown during Connie’s illness. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that you donate to your favourite charity or fellowship, or do something nice for your loved ones. That is what she would want.
Visitation will be at her home in Sydney Forks today (Saturday) 7 p.m. and Sunday and Monday. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Parish in Eskasoni with the Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating, under the direction of Chant’s Funeral Home. Interment will follow the next day at the Millbrook Reserve in Truro.
Delia Isabel McGrath
76, Sydney
Delia Isabel McGrath, 76, of Alexandra St., Sydney, passed away on Sept. 30, 1999, at home.
Born in Bay Fortune, P.E.I., she was the daughter of the late Frederick MacKenzie and Annie (Campbell).
Delia was a member of Sydney River United Church and a member of the UCW of the Church.
She is survived by five daughters, Sharon (Bill) Promaine, Halifax, Shelley (Stephen) Brown, Halifax, Kim (Kevin) MacLean, Sydney, Karen (Bill) Flemming, Charlottetown, P.E.I. and Beverly (Bud) James Cake, Charlottetown, P, E.I.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband Dana McGpath and one brother Claude MacKenzie.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Sydney River United Church with Rev. A. MacIntosh officiating. Interment in Alfred Smith Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Cemetery Fund or the N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Francis Isadore Cordeau
74, Dartmouth
Francis Isadore Cordeau, 74, Dartmouth, died peacefully at home on Oct. 2, 1999, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the beloved son of the late Jean Pierre (Jack) Cordeau and Emma (Fortune) Cordeau. He is survived by his loving wife Marie (Byrne) Cordeau; three daughters, Mary, Annette (Keith) McIntosh and Therese and his special granddaughter Haley McIntosh, all of Dartmouth. He is also survived by four brothers, Daniel (Frances), Toronto, Joseph (Vivian), Sydney Mines, Father Leo, St. Edmund’s Parish, Edmonton and Charles (Katherine), Belleville, Ont. and by seven sisters, Mary (Arthur) Crane, Sydney, Detta Haley (husband Ted Haley, deceased), Sydney Mines, Teresa (Elmer) Doiron, Sydney River, Betty, Sydney Mines, Sister Geraldine and Sister Agnes, Holy Angels Convent, Sydney and Sister Anna, Congregation of Notre Dame, Edmonton. Also survived by many nieces and nephews and other relatives in Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, all of whom he knew well and loved very much. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by two brothers, John and Stanley.
After attending St. Francis Xavier University for a year, he returned home to Sydney Mines, following the sudden death of his father. He worked at the Machine Shop and Coal Wash Plant in Sydney Mines for 11 years. He studied Stationary Engineering and moved to Dartmouth where he was employed as a Stationary Engineer at the Imperial Oil Refinery for 12 years. He graduated from Dalhousie University where he obtained B.A. and B.ED. degrees and subsequently taught Stationary Engineering at the Dartmouth Regional Vocational School from 1969 until his retirement in 1988. During his years in Sydney Mines, he was very active in parish and community affairs. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish Choir and of the Local AOH Drama Club. He was a devout member of St. Peter’s Parish, Dartmouth, and a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, having served as Comptroller of the Archbishop McCarthy Assembly, 0799, Halifax. He is a past Grand Knight of St. Peter’s Council 3133, Dartmouth. His faith and courage were an inspiration to all who knew him.
Visitation will take place at the Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St., Tuesday, Oct. 5 and Wednesday, Oct. 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will take place at St. Peter’s Church, Maple St., Dartmouth on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. with Father Leo Cordeau officiating.

Susan Jane Crane
90, Sydney
Susan Jane Crane, 90, of Breton Bay Nursing Home formerly of DesBarres Street, Sydney passed away Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Rose Blanche, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Dolimont) Best. She was a member of Christ Anglican Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by four sons, Robert (Virginia), Westmount, Donald (Joan), Bramalea, Ont., William (Kay), Parksville, B.C., Gerald, Mira; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty King, Brampton, Ont. and Laura Hardy, North Sydney.
Susan was predeceased by her husband William Robert Crane (1986); two sisters, Alice Hardy and Mary Sheppard; two brothers, Robert and George.
Visitation was held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Sunday 7 p.m. Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in Christ Church Tuesday 10 a.m. with Rev. Glenn Kent officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to charity of choice.
Shirley (MacPherson) Currie
64, Sydney
Shirley (MacPherson) Currie, 64 of Alexander St., Sydney, died Oct. 3, 1999, at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in Dominion, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Amy (Allison) MacPherson.
Shirley was a former member of St. Eugene’s Church in Dominion, as well as a former resident of Brook St., Dominion. In her earlier years Shirley was employed in Boston as a nursing aid.
She is survived by one daughter Mary Cynthia (Mrs. Steve Haggar), Mt. Uniacke and two sons, Len and his wife Rose, Reserve Mines and Shawn, Sydney; six sisters, Mildred Monette, Geraldine Currie, Martina McGraw, all of Kitchener, Ont., Winnifred Petrie, Toronto, Mary MacPherson, Boston and Rose MacLeod, Sydney. Shirley is also survived by five grandchildren, Samantha, Sara, William, Anna and Robbie.
Shirley was predeceased by a sister Sheila Mace of Boston.
Visitation will take place Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
