Johnena Ferguson
80, Sydney
Johnena Ferguson, 80, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of Horne’s Road, passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Catalone, she was a daughter of the late Malcolm and Katherine (Robertson) Maclntyre.
She was an adherent of Union Presbyterian Church, Mira Ferry.
Johnena is survived by two sons, Archibald (Joanne), Horne’s Road and Norman (Norma), Sydney; two grandchildren, Denise and Kathleen; step-grandchildren, Debra and James; one great grandson Caleb. Also one sister Annie Woodworth, Brickyard Road.
Johnena was predeceased by her husband Alex Ferguson in 1983 and several sisters and brothers.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Tuesday 11:30 a.m. with Rev. David Stewart and Rev. Neil MacLean officiating. Interment in Loch End Cemetery, Catalone.

Leona P. Lloyd Kennedy
Sydney
Leona P. Lloyd Kennedy, of Cottage Road, Sydney, passed away on Oct. 2, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in St. Peter’s, Nova Scotia she was a daughter of the late Stephen P. Sampson and Goldie (Arnold). Leona was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 12 Ladies Auxiliary and the Sergeant Mess Dart League. Leona was also a member of the Cape Breton Home Crafters. Leona retired from the McGillivray Guest Home as a personal care worker.
She is survived by daughters, Carolyn (Don) Matheson, Sydney and Diane (Ross) Lenser, Ottawa; son, David (Susan) Kennedy, Sydney; two sisters, Marjorie Campbell, Sydney and Kathleen (Howard) Coadic, Sydney; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband Ronald H. Lloyd (1972); son Ronnie; sister Ada and a brother Reg.
The late Mrs. Kennedy will have visitation at Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service is Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Chapel. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Melissa (Honey) White
64, Glace Bay
Melissa (Honey) White, 66, of 86 Nolan’s Lane, Glace Bay, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John James and Lorena (Spencer) MacDonald. Melissa was a member of St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen. She was a former resident of the Hub. She did volunteer work with the CNIB and she loved playing cards and bingo. She was an avid CBer.
She is survived by her longtime companion, Roy Miles; one daughter, Debbie (White) MacDonald, Glace Bay; brothers, Joseph (Bobby) MacDonald, Glace Bay, John (Dookie) MacDonald, Dominion, John (Cooke) MacDonald, Bridgeport; sisters, Rose (Mrs. George Smith), Catheline (Mrs. Cecil Curry), both of Dominion, Agnes (Mrs. Kenny Pastuck), New Waterford, Cecilia MacPherson, Ontario, Shirley Chiasson, Reserve, Ann and Janice, both of Bridgeport; three grandchildren, Christopher, Jamie and Ryan.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Edward White, son, James White, daughter, Mary, brother, Melvin MacDonald, sister, Theresa Cooke.
Visitation will take place today (Wednesday) 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will take place Friday 10 a.m. in St. John’s Church with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Melissa, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Martha Morris
89, Glace Bay
Martha Morris, 89, of Seaview Manor, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, surrounded by her family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Jules and Catherine (Martell) Mombourquette. Martha was a member of St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen. She was also a member of the Catholic’s Women League and the St. Anthony’s Guild. She was a volunteer of several organizations. Besides doing household duties she was also a former employee of MT&T. She was a former resident of Center Avenue, New Aberdeen. Martha was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Martha leaves to celebrate her life, one daughter, Judy Gutzeit (Percy), Pembroke, Ont.; five sons, William (Donna), Wayne (Judy), Bruce (Patsy), all of Dartmouth, Gerald (Mary), Antigonish, John (Sheila), Sydney; also surviving 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, John F. (Mutt) Morris, sisters, Mary, Margaret and Catherine, brothers, George and William, twins, Harry and Natalie, adoptive brothers, Jim and Nathan Poole.
Cremation has taken place. Family will receive relatives and friends at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Wednesday, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen with Fr. Paul McGillivray and Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Glace Bay Food Bank or St. Vincent de Paul.

Brian Gerard Gaudet
55, Bedford
Brian Gerard Gaudet, 55, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at home.
Born in New Glasgow, he was the son of the late Raymond G. and Katherine (Muldoon) Gaudet.
He was employed with Air Canada, passenger sales and service for 33 years, chairperson for the local District 500 of the CAW and a member of the Cobequid Curling Club for the past 10 years. He enjoyed sports, in particular fishing and golf.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Snow; a son, Christopher Brian, at home; daughters, Katherine Maria (Katie), Patricia Ann (Patty-Ann), both at home; mother during his life, Marguerite (Wall) Gaudet, Sydney; sisters, Donna Innes, Woodstock, Ont., Diane Burke and Raylene Constantino, both of Sydney.
Predeceased by a brother in infancy.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Oct. 6, 1999, in T.K. Barnard Funeral Home, 1216 Bedford Highway, Bedford, N.S.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Ignatius Church, Bedford with Fr. David MacDonald officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the QEII Health Science Centre, Palliative Care Unit.

Basil Archibald Pyke
85, Glace Bay
Basil Archibald Pyke, 85, of 219 Union St., Glace Bay, formerly of Third Street, Hub, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Archibald and Elizabeth (Warford) Pyke.
Mr. Pyke worked in the coal mines as a miner, retiring in 1957, he was in the Merchant Marines and was a member of the Glace Bay Pensioners Club and an honourary member of the Hub Club. He was also a member of the Salvation Army Citadel, Glace Bay.
Mr. Pyke is survived by daughters, Karen (Richard Drinkwater), Mississauga, Ont., Norma (Ernest Roper), Glace Bay, Shirley (Dinkie Currie), Glace Bay and Phyllis (Bryant Matheson), Glace Bay, with whom he resided; sons, Basil Jr. (Allie), Guelph, Ont., Gary, Ontario; grandchildren Deanna, Carol, Debbie, Rickey, Michelle, Lori, Debbie, Karen, Kevin, Linda, Ernie, Deanna, Frances, Norma Jean, Shirley Marie. Da Pyke was the world’s greatest grandfather and will always be remembered and never forgotten by his grandchildren, Shondelle, Breanne and James; 25 great-grandchildren and brothers, Roy and Fraser.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis in 1978, a daughter in infancy, sister, Mary and brothers, Jack, Bill and Joe.
Visitation for the late Mr. Pyke will be held Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Salvation Army Citadel, Glace Bay with Maj. Denzel Baggs officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.

Angeline Ann (Toney) Hobbs
68, Glace Bay
Angeline Ann (Toney) Hobbs, 68, of Glace Bay, passed away on Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at the Glace Bay General Hospital.
Born at Whycocomagh on April 23, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (GooGoo) Toney.
Surviving is husband, John W. Hobbs, Mayfield, Ky.; daughter, Mrs. Mary Theresa Taylor, Toronto; brothers, George Toney, Eskasoni and Peter Toney, Alberta; four grandchildren, Irene, Charlie, Theresa and Lindsey; one great-granddaughter.
Predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence and John L. Toney, Eskasoni, two sisters, Mary Toney, Eskasoni and Guida M. Gallagher, Bangor, Me.
The late Mrs. Hobbs will have visitation today, Wednesday, Oct. 6 at the Holy Family Parish, Gabriel Center in Eskasoni after 2 p.m.
Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Holy Family Church with Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Arrangements under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
