Allan Gerard LeBlanc
37, Glace Bay
Allan Gerard LeBlanc, 37, of Phalen’s Road, Glace Bay, now rests peacefully after losing his year long struggle with cancer. With courage and dignity Allan died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, in the arms of his loving wife and was surrounded by family members.
Allan was employed with Cape Breton Cable since 1988 and was an active member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1852. He was also a small engine repair mechanic. He was a member of Holy Family Parish and active on the parish council.
He was a devoted husband to his wife, Michele for 11 years and a loving, caring father to his son, Jordan Allan and daughter, Avery Lauren.
Allan will join his late father, Leonard in heaven, but is survived by his mother, Marie (T.C. Lever); three brothers, Leon (Karen), Halifax, Glenn and Paul, both of Glace Bay; three sisters, Ann Marlene (LeBel), Charmaine Hiscock (Henry), both of Glace Bay and Madonna Dwyer (Bob), Sydney; mother and father-in-law, Nema and Danny McInnis, Glace Bay; brothers-in-law, Shaun, Ottawa, Craig, Glace Bay and Trevor (Rose), Greenwood.
Allan will always hold a special place in the hearts of his many nieces and nephews, family and friends.
All those who have had the pleasure of knowing Allan will always remember his clever wit and practical jokes and his expertise at a game of cribbage.
Visitation will take place Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, 1:30 p.m. in Holy Family Church, MacKay’s Corner, Glace Bay with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Alexander MacLennan
79, Baddeck
Alexander MacLennan, 79, of Baddeck, N.S., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Baddeck, he was the son of the late John (Jack) and Annabelle (Hart) MacLennan. He was a member of Gospel Hall, Baddeck. Alex was employed by George and Jean Fraser of 52 years
He is survived by his wife, the former Rachel Martin; son, Willie and his wife Geraldine, Ontario; daughter, Susie MacPhee, Baddeck; sister, Phyllis MacDonald, Baddeck; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters, Marion Morrison and Marguerite MacQuarrie.
The body is resting at MacAskill Funeral Home visiting hours 2-9 p.m. Thursday. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at MacAskill Funeral Home with J.R. MacDonald officiating assisted by Bruce Nicholson. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Alexander Kerr
North River Bridge
Alex Kerr of North River Bridge passed away suddenly on Monday, Oct. 4, 1999.
Born in North River, the son of the late Dan Angus and Sarah (Briggette) Kerr and step-mother Jesse A. (MacLeod), Alex retired from Municipal Ready Mix where he worked for 30 years.
In his younger years he also worked in the woods and farmed. He especially loved horses. He always had a story or a joke and a cup of tea for friends and neighbours when they dropped in for a visit.
Alex is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Jean (MacDonald) Kerr; his son, Jess. Baddeck; his daughters, Valerie MacLean, Truro and Kathy, North River; grandchildren, Shannon, Dereck and Monica Kerr, Shana, Natasha and Morgan MacLean; brothers, John, Sydney and Peter, Baddeck and his sister, Murdena Carmichael, Munroe’s Point.
Visitation for the late Alex Kerr will be held Oct. 6 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, North River. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Church, North River with the Rev. Jackie MacDonald and Shirley Murdock officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, North River. Arrangements under the direction of MacAskill’s Funeral Home.

Mary Jane Gould
82, Eskasoni
Mary Jane Gould, 82, of 21-B Shore Rd., Eskasoni, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Eskasoni, she was the daughter of the late Capt. Simon and Harriet (Joe) Denny. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni.
She spent many years dedicated to the pilgrimage to St. Anne de Beaupré since it began in Eskasoni.
She was a lifetime member of St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal. She was very skilled in the art of basket making.
Mary Jane was the last surviving member of her immediate family, which was the family of the late Grand Chief John Denny.
She is survived by five daughters, Freda (Mrs. Allison Bernard), Marina (Mrs. Richard Denny), Rita (Mrs. Ernest Isaac), Norma (Mrs. Vernon Doucette) and Margaret (Mrs. Stephen Simon), all of Eskasoni; five sons, Francis (Mary), Russell (Deborah), Kenneth (Priscilla), Allister (Cindy) and Sheridan, all of Eskasoni. She is also survived by her aunt, Annie Francis, Big Harbour Island, N.S. and by two Godchildren, Michael J. Paul, Whycocomagh and Noel I. Denny, Eskasoni; 62 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank S., two brothers, Noel S. and John S., one foster brother, John Michael, two daughters, Pauline and Emily, two sons, Simon and Russell, two sons in infancy, Simon and Milton, one grandson, Terry and two great-grandchildren, Francesca and Tyrick.
The late Mrs. Gould will have visitation at the family residence 21-B Shore Rd., Saturday, Oct. 9 after 2 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church with the Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Leona Madeline MacPhee RN
81, Sydney
Leona MacPhee, RN, 81, wife of the late Norman James MacPhee, of 56 DesBarres St., Sydney, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at MacGillivray Guest Home.
Born on March 15, 1918, in Success, Sask., she was the daughter of the late William Demaer and the late Mary (LeBrie) Demaer, the ninth in a family of 13 children.
She is survived by two daughters, Beth MacNeil, Beaver Cove and Denise (George) MacLean, Lower Sackville; four sons, Howard Daniel, Sydney, William Frederick, Saskatchewan, Donald Gordon, Victoria Mines and Daniel Norman, British Columbia; sister, Delores, Saskatchewan and a brother Edmund, Saskatchewan. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The late Mrs. MacPhee will have visitation Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Church, Sydney with Rev. A. O’Connor officiating.
Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Alice Alma (Moore) Skinner
82, Louisbourg
Alice Alma (Moore) Skinner, 82, of Louisbourg, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Jersey Harbour, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Fredrick and Maude (Cox) Moore.
She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church, Louisbourg and a lifetime member of the ACW.
She is survived by one son, Carl (Eileen), daughters, Marjorie MacDonald and Sheila (Tom) Fudge, Louisbourg; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers, Chesly, North Sydney and Fredrick, Lunenburg; two sisters, Joy and Claire, Newfoundland; sister-in-law, Emma Bartlett and brother-in-law, Clayton Skinner.
She was predeceased by her husband, William J. Skinner, sisters, Emily and Millie, one brother, Isaac, a granddaughter, Barbara and two sons-in-law, Cecil and John.
Visitation will be held today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Saturday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at W.A. Chant’s Funeral Home, Main Street, Louisbourg. Funeral service will take place Sunday at 3 p.m. from St. Bartholomew’s Church, Louisbourg.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bartholomew or the Alzheimer Foundation.

83, England
Richard N.F. Whalley, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at his home in Bramley, Surrey, England, age 83.
He was the son of the late Rev. C.K. Whalley and Muriel Whalley.
He served overseas with the RCAF.
He is survived by sons, Simon, Nigel and Francis and a daughter, Deborah Constantine, all in the U.K. Also brothers, John, Edmonton, Alta. and Michael, Sydney, N.S.; sisters, Dorothy Fraser and Joan Logan, both of Victoria, B.C. and Faith Nicolle, St. John’s, Nfld.
He was predeceased by his wife, June.
Funeral services and burial will take place in the U.K.
