Edna Hussey
93, Donkin
Edna Hussey, 93, a lifelong resident of Center Avenue, Donkin, recently of Seaview Manor, passed away peacefully at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Friday, Oct. 15, 1999.
Born in Donkin, Edna was the daughter of the late John D. and Catherine (Morrison) Brann. Mrs. Hussey was a member of St. Lukes United Church, Donkin. In her early years Edna was an active member of St. Lukes UCW, as well as being a 50 year member of Queen Victoria Rebekah Lodge No. 63.
Mrs. Hussey is survived by her daughter, Catherine (Robert) Seward, Glace Bay; son, David (Marie) Hussey, North Sydney. She is also survived by a stepsister, Vera Ward, Coquitlam, B.C. and six grandchildren, Craig, Kerri, David, Janice, Blair and Glen; several nieces and nephews and a special family friend, Catherine (Duddie) Ryan.
Edna was predeceased by her husband Roy, parents, John D. and Catherine, sisters, Annabell and Mamie and a brother, William.
Visitation for the late Edna Hussey will be held today (Saturday), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17 at St. Lukes United Church, Donkin with the Rev. Jim Chisholm officiating. Interment will be in St. Lukes United Cemetery, Donkin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Church, Donkin as an expression of sympathy.
Edna’s spirit of friendship was a pleasure to all who encountered her.
We can’t feel saddened over the loss of those we love without first remembering the joy of loving them. The real sadness would have been never having them in our lives at all. We who have truly loved are blessed.
Mary Helen MacKinnon
Dallas, Tex.
Family and friends were saddened to hear of the death of Mary Helen (Wood) MacKinnon of Dallas, Tex.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred MacKinnon, formerly of Beaver Cove and a former manager of the Sydney Credit Union.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Helen Cole and son-in-law Fran Cole and Eileen Smith and son-in-law Chris Smith and seven grandchildren.
Martha (Margaret) MacKinnon
80, Sydney River
Martha (Margaret) MacKinnon, 80, of 97 Riverview Dr., Sydney River, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Gillis Lake, Cape Breton County, she was the daughter of the late Ranald and Annie (MacIntyre) Gillis of Gillis Lake. She was a lifelong resident of Sydney River and one of the founding members of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River and a member of the CWL.
She is survived by a daughter, Peggy (Adam) Landry, New Minas; two sons, Gregory, Sydney and Lorne (Pamela), Kentville; three sisters, Sarah MacFarlane, MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney, Theresa (Mrs. Stan Krszwda), Sydney and Catherine (Kay) MacDonald, East Bay and one brother, Jimmie (Josette), Gillis Lake; four grandchildren, Sheri MacKinnon, Maine and Darren MacKinnon, Hamilton, Ont., Margaret Matheson MacKinnon and Kalie Martha MacKinnon, Kentville, N.S. and many nieces and nephews who will especially miss her humour and tarabish playing; and many friends and neighbours who thought so much of her.
Besides her parents, Martha was predeceased by her husband, Daniel Joseph, an infant daughter, Donna Marie, a son, Donnie and brothers, Joseph and Johnny.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. The funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Fatima Parish Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Martha’s memory can be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Henry (Harry) Forbes Mitchell
91, Sydney
Henry (Harry) Forbes Mitchell, 91, of 1678 Coxheath Rd., Sydney (formerly Martell Street, Westmount), passed away on Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at home.
Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, he was the son of the late Henry Forbes and Jane Tompkins (Fowler) Mitchell.
Harry moved to Canada in early 1954, taking up residence in Newfoundland. He was retired from CN Marine. Prior to his retirement he served as chief engineer on the Carson.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Donno (Clapham) Mitchell, in 1981, two sons, Henry Forbes and Albert Edward. Harry was also predeceased by two brothers, John and Jim, four sisters, Jean, Frances, Daisy and Mima.
He is survived by eight grandchildren, Angela, Forbes, Lynne, Donna, Susan, Albert, Bill, Harry and a number of great-grandchildren. Harry will be sadly missed by his daughter-in-law, Kathleen (Henry) Mitchell and a close personal friend, Viola Redmond.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating. Interment will be held in Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.
Donations may be made to the charity of your choice, in lieu of flowers.
Patrick E. Prenty
86, North Sydney
Patrick Earl Prenty, 86, a resident of the seniors complex at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney and formerly of 43 Mapleview Dr., North Sydney, passed away Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Patrick and Elizabeth Prenty. Patty worked as a labourer most of his life. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney.
He is survived by two sisters, Evelyn (Mrs. Angus Beaton), North Sydney and Kay (Mrs. Joe Rowan), Boston; one brother, Ernie, North Sydney.
He was predeceased by his parents.
Visitation will be held Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass Monday at 2 p.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with the Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Mary "Woody" Cuncliffe
54, Sydney Mines
Mary “Woody” Cunliffe, 54, of 35 Main Street, Sydney Mines, died peacefully at the Northside General Hospital surrounded by her friends and family.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of Kathlene (Hayward) Cunliffe and the late Peter Cunliffe. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish.
She is survived by her daughter Peggy; her sisters Christine (Tom) Farrell, Pam Major, Kathy and Bernadine, all of Ontario, Millie Bourque, New Brunswick and Jeannie (Kenny) Carey, Sydney Mines; her brothers Dave and Ken, British Columbia, Pete, Ontario and Alex, Sydney Mines. Also surviving is her uncle Bob Hayward and special friends Alvina Sutherland, Robena Hipson, Margaret Bell, Ruby Genter, Gloria Stoodley, Donna Miller and Leone MacArthur.
She was predeceased by a life partner; her brothers Len and Bill and her sister Doreen.
She will be remembered by her friends as humorous, compassionate and strong. She will be missed by all those who were touched by her life.
Visitation Wednesday 7-9 p.m. only at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral Thursday 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Following the Funeral, an evening gathering will be held at her home to celebrate her life. All are welcome.

Cletus Daisley
62, Ingonish Beach
Mr. Cletus Daisley, 62, of Ingonish Beach, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neils Harbour.
Born at Ingonish Beach, he was the son of the late William and Mary Jane (Brewer) Daisley.
Cletus was a man who had the gift of bringing love and laughter to everyone who had the good fortune of knowing him. He could be called upon to help with any job and did so willingly, enjoying the spirit of any occasion, work, or party. He leaves this world having enriched it for his family and so many friends North and South of Smoky.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Ingonish, and a 4th degree Knight of the Father George Arsenault, Chapter 9391, Knights of Columbus, Ingonish. He served as Grand Knight until his illness and was involved with the Cursillo movement for over 10 years. He was employed with the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission in Ingonish.
He is survived by his wife Ruth (Castell); foster daughter Marilyn in the Philippines; sons Bill (Val) in Sarnia, Ont., Stephen (Kim) in Ottawa; his sister Mary in Wales; brothers Wendel (Carm) in Halifax, Clarence (Ann) in Ingonish, John in Halifax; and grandsons Benjamin and Mathew.
He was predeceased by his sister Susan and brothers Jimmy and Harold.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish, Monday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church with Rev. John Morrison officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
