Duncan Kitchener Grant
86, Middle River
Duncan Kitchener Grant, 86, of Middle River, Vict. Co., died Oct. 16, 1999, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Middle River, he was the son of the late Alexander and Annie (MacRae) Grant. He owned and operated a lumber business in Middle River and was an adherent of Farquharson Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are sisters, Charlotte MacIver, Nyanza, Jean Grant, North Sydney, Olive MacKay, Baddeck Bridge; three nieces and three nephews.
Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 2-5, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. Funeral is 2 p.m. Thursday in Farquharson Memorial Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Ken Allen officiating. Burial in Middle River Cemetery.
Family flowers only, donations to Middle River Cemetery Fund or the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, ICU Unit.

Douglas Francis Lewis
82, Sydney
Douglas Francis Lewis, 82, of Catherine Street, Sydney passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at home.
Born in Point Edward, he was a son of the late Stanley and Margaret (Rudderham) Lewis. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the West Nova Regiment. Prior to retirement Douglas worked at Mason’s Wholesale.
He is survived by his wife the former Florence (Chase); daughter Sharon (Earl) (Bucky) MacEachern, Trout Brook Road; three sons Douglas (Karen), Bedford, Gary (Karen), Corunna, Ont. and Gordon (Diane) Porter’s Lake; nine grandchildren Shauna, Leanne, Jason, Aaron, Jody, Adrienne, Dereck, Ryan, Jasmine; three brothers Merrill (Genny), Richard (Sandra), Gilbert (Bernadine), all of Point Edward.
He was predeceased by three sisters Isabel, Jetta Rudderham and Mary Lewis; one brother Leonard.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday at 1 p.m. until funeral service at 2 p.m. with Rev David Stewart officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cape Breton Cancer Treatment Centre, Palliative Care services of C.B. Regional Hospital or charity of choice.

Hector Matheson MacKenzie
87, Ross Ferry
Mr. Hector Matheson MacKenzie, 87, of Ross Ferry, Vict. Co., died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born at Baddeck Bay, he was the son of the late Fraser and Margaret (Matheson) MacKenzie.
He was a member and Elder of Drummond United Church, Ross Ferry, and was retired from the Dept. of Highways with 37 years service. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Armstrong Br. 19 Royal Canadian Legion, North Sydney.
He is survived by his wife Arabel (MacFarlane); daughter Marguerite (Mrs. George MacAskill), Ross Ferry; granddaughter Jennifer (Mrs. Sheldon Daisley), Ross Ferry; grandson Allan MacAskill, Edmonton; sisters Mary Crowdis and Ruth MacFarlane, both of Ross Ferry; brothers, Christopher, Baddeck, Rindress and Raymond, both in Boularderie Center and Fraser, North Sydney.
He was predeceased by his brother Alexander.
Visitation will be held Monday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m., in Drummond United Church, Ross Ferry, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 3 p.m. with Rev. Louis Ihasz officiating, assisted by Rev. Donald MacGuire. Burial under the direction Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, will be in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may made to Drummond United Church Memorial Fund or to the charity of choice.

Margaret M. Smith
102, Sydney River
Margaret M. Smith, 102 of Keltic Dr. and formerly of Birch Grove, died at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999.
Born in Port Morien, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Sarah (Holmes) MacDonald. Mrs. Smith was a member of MacKay Memorial United Church in Birch Grove, and was treasurer of the Church for 40 years and she was honourary member of the U.C.W.
Mrs. Smith is survived by daughters, Kay (Roy) Evans, Sydney River, with whom she resided, Vivian (Al Golding), Williamsburg, Virginia; son Gordon (Sara) Smith, Westmount Road; three grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. She was the last member of her immediate family.
Predeceased by her husband William J. Smith; daughter Irene Shewchuk; three sisters and two brothers.
Visitation was held Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral and Committal Service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Allan McIntosh officiating. Interment will be in Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MacKay Memorial United Church, Birch Grove or charity of choice.

Elizabeth Finnell
Marion Bridge
On Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, God took back an angel, Elizabeth, to be reunited with her beloved husband Francis, together again forever. Elizabeth died peacefully at home in Marion Bridge surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Ottawa Brook, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (MacLean) Northen.
Elizabeth will be sadly missed by her two caring daughters, Estelle (Bobby) Lund and Maxine, with whom she resided, brother, Cosmas Northen, MacKinnon’s Harbour; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Ellis, Josie Bonaparte, Hannah Northen, brother, Peter and a brother, Peter Dominic in infancy.
Elizabeth was a well known musician who’s career spanned over 50 years. She was a charter member of the Cape Breton’s Musicians Union Local 355. Her musical career began at the age of 13 as an accordion player with the Harmony Nine. She performed with many fiddlers and was a regular pianist with Scotty Fitzgerald on Cape Breton Ceilidh. Liz was a member of the Wee Hours and till her retirement, the group Tabloid.
Mom’s unconditional love for her family and her kind, generous and giving nature was an inspiration for all who were touched by her.
The late Mrs. Finnell will have visitation today (Tuesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River. Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating with interment in St. Theresa Cemetery, Sydney.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Sydney Oncology Unit.

Myrna Gatto
67, Dominion
Myrna Gatto, 67, of 168 Mitchell Ave., Dominion, died peacefully at home on Sunday, 0ct. 17, 1999.
Born in Dominion, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Christina (Campbell) MacDonald. During her working life she was employed as a telephone operator and real estate broker.
She is survived by her husband, Remo; son, Mark, Edmonton, Alta.; two daughters, Margo Ann Hoise, Red Deer and Cynthia MacDonald, Halifax. She is also survived by one brother, Ronald MacDonald, Dominion and six grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by one grandson, Andrew MacDonald Gatto.
There will be no visitation. Funeral arrangements, under Curry Funeral Home, Glace Bay, are incomplete at this time.
Family flowers only, donations in Myrna’s memory may be made to St. Eugene’s Cemetery Fund or a charity of choice.

The memorial mass for the late Myrna Gatto will be celebrated Friday, 7 p.m., at St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion with Rev. Ray Huntley officiating. A reception will follow.
Arrangements are entrusted to Curry Funeral Home, Glace Bay.
